On Andrew Marr, it sounded like he wanted to do an experiment in tier 4 areas to see what opening schools would do with the rates of increase.
I’m choosing not to let my child be part of his experiment and keeping him home.

MercyBooth · 04/01/2021 00:44

Hope BT have got the memo

*This is the unbelievable thing. We all know they're going to have to close schools in a matter of days. They know it. We know it. We know they know it. They know we know it.

What in the fuckiest fucking corner of fucking hell is the point in mixing all those millions of kids before we get round to actually doing it?

This is just insanity now.*

(Anyone know how to.flippin.bold, it's not working for.me!!?)

Use the quote button it’s easier!

But if you want to Use bold. The poster you were quoting has written in paragraphs with spacing in between each one, You have to star The start and end of each paragraph and remove the full stop. Hope this helps.

UpsyDaisysarmpit · 04/01/2021 00:47

@divebomber my DP is not supportive of us not sending her in, and DD herself is actually keen to go in. Transmission in our area is up, but still lower than most in the early 200s per 100 000. I hope they close soon. I did keep my kids off in March for the last week before they finally closed schools.

saraclara · 04/01/2021 00:49
@mrsknottschicken

There are legitimate arguments about whether schools to be closed to reduce overall transmission and protect NHS capacity.

However, DC themselves are at extremely low risk from COVID. Indeed, they are at far more risk from schools being closed.

Parents and staff are also at very low risk unless clinically vulnerable.

The ‘risk’ to DC is a terrible argument for schools to close.
The new variant is different. Children are catching it more readily, and transmitting it more easily. They might not get sick themselves, but they will go into school and then bring it back to their families. Many of which will include a vulnerable member.

Bleepertybleep · 04/01/2021 00:50

MrJinxyCat. It did sound very much as if that were the intention - seeing what the figures in the tier 4 areas are like in a few week. I think anyone with a teeny imagination realise that they are going to be too high. So it’s a matter of when he does another u turn not if. Because he can’t bear to be seen to be taking any advice off Starmer, he will no doubt wait until there have been a load of extra and unnecessary illness and deaths.

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 04/01/2021 00:51

@UpsyDaisysarmpit if I was in your shoes I think I'd follow the safety route and not send her in as lockdown is likely imminent & you'll have less chance of Christmas mixing contacts that have not yet tested positive / are asymptomatic coming into contact with your family.

onanotherday · 04/01/2021 00:52

We can all see that there needs to be another lockdown...and I doubt anyone wants it..but I will not be waiting for Boris and definitely not Gavin to tell me what is safe...my dd will stay home..as in a few days she will probably have to anyway.

If he had listened to why SAGE were saying sooner we might not be in this situation.

But the SAGE minutes of 22/12 are very clear ..action is needed now.

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 04/01/2021 00:54

@thecatfromjapan

Actually, I really am sorry for being so sweary.

I have a relative whose treatment has been delayed - almost certainly because hospitals are stretched.

It's just stressful.

Don't be. The only proper response to mismanagement of a crisis of this magnitude is profanity.

I hope your relative gets their treatment and is on the road to recovery soon.

Agree!
marshmallowfluffy · 04/01/2021 00:55

Ffs he should have done this at the weekend so the country could benefit from the families who were sensible over the Xmas holidays. 🤦🏻‍♀️

thetoughhaveleft · 04/01/2021 00:56

I don't know what to do. All local primaries closed tomorrow except the one my dd attends. I want to keep her at home. She wants desperately to go to school. It's an awful decision to make and parents shouldn't have to make decisions about whether their child is safe to go to school.

DenisetheMenace · 04/01/2021 00:59

Suspect most families have made their decisions already.
We gave up on the Govt. many moons ago.

I'm in the same position as you are, in that my 7 year old is looking forward to going back to school, but I feel really worried and uncomfortable about letting him go in. Equally, what do I tell the school? They've already made it clear that parents who 'prevent their children from getting the education they need by keeping them at home' will be reported to the council and possibly fined as a result. Boris has left us between a rock and a hard place, and I'm furious and scared about the repercussions (both personally and for the entire country) in equal measures.
Furries · 04/01/2021 01:07

My few mum friends already have inset day tomorrow, which takes the pressure off slightly. Their primary school has contacted this evening to say they aren’t opening until Wednesday at the earliest. It’s obviously not ideal in terms of people sorting out childcare etc, but at least they’ve given a small amount of notice and a bit of leeway. If a U-turn is done in the next 48 hours, at least they won’t have broken their Christmas break progress in the area.

I’m so cross - whichever way you feel about schools being open or not, this is a nightmare for absolutely everyone. Kids, parents and teachers. A decision either way is at least something that can be “dealt” with, but this indecision, with everyone knowing how it’s probably going to end up in a few days, is just plain bloody cruel, incompetent and so many other words that I’m too angry to think of right now.

ineedaholidaynow · 04/01/2021 01:08

I don’t think they will be fining as I think most schools will be having some sort of further restrictions on them soon. It is interesting that teachers can say they won’t work in the school building as not safe under H&S, wonder if there is a similar section 44 for pupils not wanting to be in an unsafe school

treedragon · 04/01/2021 01:09

All these kids that are sesperate to go to school. In my young day all we wanted to do was get off school wherever possible and yearned for Teacher's strikes to get time off.

Jenasaurus · 04/01/2021 01:13

This is absurd timing! Why has he waited until tomorrow, some of the damage will be done by then with the children in schools and nursery. Why does he always do this. There was a real opportunity to stop this virus and as he always says "Save lives" Do you know what time he will make the announcement if he makes his mind up?

StormBaby · 04/01/2021 01:15

I guarantee I will still have to go to work, co ordinating deliveries in to peoples homes. How is that still deemed safe?

happystone · 04/01/2021 01:23

We all know how the virus spreads yes children are low risk elderly are not. Virus starts spreading through young to get to the old. Do people still not understand after a year

CloseSchoolsProtecttheNHS · 04/01/2021 01:24

Is there anyone on mumsnet who doesn’t want a full lockdown with school closures? It’s like a parallel universe here.

Yes plenty, but on the whole it's a very intelligent group of parents.

I'm not sending my children in tomorrow. There is another lockdown coming, so don't be that muppet that caught Covid in the few days Boris took to get his ego under control.

happystone · 04/01/2021 01:27

If you can wear ppe and keep a distance it’s safe to people not understand a teacher in a small room with 30 students no ppe no distancing is not safe. Don’t believe every thing borris says. I would not work in a school. Working in supermarket is bad enough but I have ppe and customers don’t ask me to tie there laces sourt out there cuts and to have physical contact with me

SophieDahling · 04/01/2021 01:27

Self-selecting threads, posters typing into an echo chamber. In the real-world, I don’t think parents want this. My DC attend three different schools, so I have three separate groups of parent friends and nobody is pleased about this. Everyone wants schools open and for our children to be educated.

I just think posters avoid these threads because they’ll be shouted down by the paranoid “lock us down!” brigade.

Most parents I know what teachers to be safe most care for elderly parents or family members work in care homes and our concerned about spreading the virus to family ect. I live in a low wage area tier 4. Maybe we care more and think of other people apart from ourselves.
