I’m back teaching in a fully open primary school tomorrow.

@Bagamoyo1

Is there anyone on mumsnet who doesn’t want a full lockdown with school closures? It’s like a parallel universe here.
Personally me but im in an area with low rates although looking at it tonight it has began to creep up I can see its most likely needed but I can't help but think if he had done something earlier on prioritise the teachers for vaccines been firmer on self isolating when coming in from other countries made test before travel mandatory my daughters uni made her test before coming home ffs not many did it was all "guidance"

Our PM needs balls then perhaps this wouldn't be necessary

ineedaholidaynow · 04/01/2021 00:21

I wonder where Gavin is. I can't believe he didn't appear today although I would have just sworn at him every time he opened his mouth!

Yes, I'm a bit perplexed as to how its always just one more lockdown to get Covid under control, but none of the lockdowns have ever succeeded in getting Covid under control. I do question whether they contribute to ideal breeding grounds for this type of more infectious strain.

In real life, I don't actually know such pious people. In private, people criticise the continual lockdowns, particularly those who have full time jobs not in the public sector. But people are becoming increasingly afraid of the online vitriol in voicing their opposition.

SpringTime2020 · 04/01/2021 00:21

Oh god - it's so confusing. Some Tier 4 have schools closed, some don't. Talk of Tier 5 which is what? We're already having to stay at home, only essential shops open and schools closed...so what's Tier 5?? We were Tier 3 for less than a week after Nov Lockdown meaning the high street shops could open but the shopping centre shops had to close...nect thing we're Tier 4 so the hight street shops close and the Boots, Poundland and Wilkos in the shopping centre open again! I can't keep up!

Quaagars · 04/01/2021 00:22

@Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady

I hope he makes the right decision

Lockdown and schools closed

That's easy to say though, if you're in a position where you can easily do that. Right now, I am. I can home school my kids now I'm a SAHM, but when they were young primary school age there was no way I could have coped with a school closed scenario if there was a pandemic. I'd probably have been expected to work at home, on the phones. How do you do that with a 6 year old and a 2 year old and only you at home?! It wouldn't have been doable. It comes from a place of privilege to say otherwise, and I know I'm so lucky to be able to supervise home learning now.
RobinRedford · 04/01/2021 00:22

I believe that Boris knew exactly that there was going to be a lockdown he just hasn’t got the balls to come out and say it.

This has been the problem all the way through. Wasn’t it predicted a while back there would be a second wave at Christmas and there was talk At the time of having a four week holiday/lockdown to combat this.

Boris knows exactly what needs to be done and when but by the time he makes a decision it’s too bloody late. If this lockdown is imminent then schools should definitely no be reopening tomorrow.
Why risk sending the kids back for a day and undoing all the work that has been done.

If Boris doesn’t pull his friggin finger out then we’re never going to get a hold of this

Rummikub · 04/01/2021 00:22

I thought they’d try a rota for school attendance
50:50
Week in week off
Strict bubbles Etc

But school closure feels like an extreme before trying the reduced contact first

Noellodee · 04/01/2021 00:23

Lockdown is like bailing out a sinking ship. It doesn't plug the holes and you have to keep doing it, but it does stop a lot of people drowning.

ineedaholidaynow · 04/01/2021 00:24

They had a tier system set out for schools which included rotas but they have never implemented it. Probably too late now, although maybe possible in the low rate areas

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 04/01/2021 00:25

He was waffling on about wanting to test the tiers earlier. It's not a ducking year 8 experiment.

Wasting the Christmas Holidays and putting everyone under this much stress is just fucking ridiculous

Better late than never, but JFC can they not do one thing ON TIME??

IHateThisVirus · 04/01/2021 00:26

This is the unbelievable thing. We all know they're going to have to close schools in a matter of days. They know it. We know it. We know they know it. They know we know it.

*What in the fuckiest fucking corner of fucking hell is the point in mixing all those millions of kids before we get round to actually doing it?

This is just insanity now.*

This ^....

Butterymuffin · 04/01/2021 00:27

@covetingthepreciousthings

The whole thing is a shambles. It's to be hoped that he makes an announcement at 7am so that all the kids don't trot off to schools in the morning..

It'll probably be held off till later in the week.

Now that Starmer has called for lockdown, Johnson will refuse to do it just to make a point for at least 48 hours. He's that petty.
Aixenprovence · 04/01/2021 00:27

*"Bagamoyo1

It depends on the thread you're on I'd say. In fact there was a thread earlier this evening where some posters were discussing the fact that that they were not particularly worried about catching the virus. So I'd say the answer to your question is yes, but an unscientific guess is that the majority of posts are usually in support at the moment.

happystone · 04/01/2021 00:28

Don’t worry about tier 5.worry about tier 10. Tier 10 your locked in your bedroom having to repeat borris catch phrase “schools are safe”

cyclingmad · 04/01/2021 00:30

*👏 well done for all those who got so hysterical about not having their bloody Xmas get togethers and would have defied the rules so there was no choice to be allow mixing

The London hospital crisis that keeps being purported on here isn't the truth its already been dismissed but carry on peddling that lie

You wanted the schools shut theb you complain about kids not getting their education you cant have both or you know why don't you take the time to engage with the children you choose to have and educate them instead

Well done all those sitting pretty in big houses not having to worry about money and can get through lockdown after lockdown meanwhile people stuck in flats in small spaces, people losing their business and jobs and then the roof over their heads hope that makes you feel good.

Its an entire year almost, we have been told repeatedly this is a virus and w shave to leave to live with it but naw you just cannot comply with wearing masks properly or keeping sonance and god forbid for short while not mixing

Well it might not be this lockdown but if we carry on like this not even those who think they are immune from the consequences will be cos one day you'll find yourself in thag position where you lose your job and potentially your home and I for one will have no empathy for u lockdown lovers.

Yes I’d seen that too. I think trying it must be better than inaction. I liked andy Burnham’s suggestion too of extending all the school holidays by two weeks. Numbers rise while schools open then bringing them back down again so numbers are a bit more controlled But that involves planning!
colouringindoors · 04/01/2021 00:31

Criminally incompetent! The fucker is literally killing people by delaying this decision, as he's done before.

The case numbers line in the graph is almost vertical.

We've already got 50% more covid patients in hospital than we did in April.

And the impact of Christmas mixing hasn't really hit yet.

Carriecakes80 · 04/01/2021 00:32

Johnsons really screwed the pooch on this one eh...two of my friends dead and gone as not given the proper PPE...severe lockdown is needed asap, schools closed, and someone with f*&^ing BALLS to run the bloody country, not this jellified spineless dolt of a man whose only care is how much money can he chuck at his mates before his time runs out.

So angry.

UpsyDaisysarmpit · 04/01/2021 00:32

My DS (13) is y9, so not back in until the 18th at least, but DD is in y6 and as we're in a Tier 3 area she will be going in. I am feeling so twitchy about it because DP and I are CEV and my DM in our bubble is very much so. I am scared of her bringing it back with her.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 04/01/2021 00:36

My DC's gates normally open at 8.35. If the school was open (thank you NEU and NAHT members it isn't) he'd have until 8.50 to avoid 15 minutes of unmasked contact.
After that anyone who was careful over the holidays starts again from day 1 and we needa good few weeks of being careful again.

divebomber · 04/01/2021 00:37

Upsydaisy why don't you just not send in your child? It will all close soon.

The risk is covid or she has to self isolate because someone else has.

I would stay home and try get your children to go for an outdoor walk.
