To say if they bring in the "only one hour a day outside" guidance I am NOT going to follow it

There are rumours on the BBC news that the Government might bring back rules saying you can only exercise outside for an hour a day.

AIBU to ignore it if they do? I followed it last time despite the fact that it was only in guidance (rather than the law) even though it had a negative impact on me and there is an incredibly low chance of the virus being transmitted outside, especially if you keep away from people.

Bringing this rule back whilst schools stay open seems especially ridiculous.

Really? I don't recall this being the case, and I have complied with all restrictions.

I'm Irish too and I agree, the claim of only being allowed out for an hour a day doesn't ring a single bell for me.

BashfulClam · 04/01/2021 00:26

Some people in Scotland thought there was half an hour allowed and I had a spat on Facebook with a numpty proclaiming this. Who is timing you?

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 04/01/2021 00:31

Fab excuse for me to be even more lazy. I'll be sticking to it.

cyclingmad · 04/01/2021 00:32

Why are you posting fake information and scaremongering, why don't you just wait until the announcement is made and the facts are known instead of speculating and getting in a tizzy about it

Ffs this place, social media the media 🙄

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/01/2021 00:40

This makes me feel like a dreadful parent. We haven’t left the house today and only went to supermarket yesterday 😬
I am disabled and a single parent, but still... Do you not ever have days where you don’t leave the house?

I can tell you that I HAD to get out with DD every day and oops now it turns out she has ADHD. I would be on beaches with me, DD and a hundred dog walkers. So all the people that say they are out in all weathers, they are a small minority! Lots people barely leave their homes!

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 04/01/2021 00:41

If it does become a rule and you’re going to break it, and you want to go unnoticed, then it’s probably best you just do so quietly and chances are no one will notice. Or you can come on here and shout about it for attention. It depends on whether you want to actually go outside for as long as you like, in which case, keep quiet, or you want to seek attention, in which case come and tell everyone your plans on here I guess. Wink

I did read it somewhere earlier, been looking and now cannot find it but it was definitely there in print - a proposal for only one hour's exercise away from home.

However the latest on the BBC is that there is 'unlimited' exercise allowed outside home.

Therefore........
.....as you suggest, we wait and see.

TheUndoingProject · 04/01/2021 00:45

For goodness sake OP, your goodwill might be gone but the virus hasn’t. The selfish refusal of some to follow the rules for just a few more months will lead to countless avoidable deaths before vaccinations can be rolled out.

lyralalala · 04/01/2021 00:50

It was never a rule.

Gove said it on the BBC and it ran and ran and ran despite it being his opinion, not rule nor law.

EndemicPanda · 04/01/2021 00:54

But this is the point - me going out as much as I like for exercise without interacting with anyone won't spread the virus. I live semi-rurally. The woods I visit are just over the road (I don't drive).

I was following the guidance to the letter including Gove's OTT interpretations back when this started in some sort of misguided belief that we were all in this together and that me sticking to the rules strictly would somehow make those in big cities like London also stick to them. But I just don't care anymore. If people in eg London need restrictions so that they aren't crowding the streets then they can have their own rules. I'm done with the lowest common denominator guidance and following common sense from now on.

Presumably the 'one hour' idea came from articles such as this?

@Yohoheaveho

If you have a nice big garden you're not allowed to go out at all if you live in a flat go as much as you want That should be the rule
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I thought you were serious for a moment.

What utter bollocks.

If someone is walking out in open countryside, for instance, they are not causing any increased risk. If the virus could spread that easily we would have all had it by now

Plus staying fit and healthy is one of the best ways we can lower our individual risk and help the NHS right now.

Colouringaddict · 04/01/2021 01:18

@Sparklingbrook

Well I don't fancy a one hour walk while the pavements are sheet ice and in minus temperatures. Hope the hour isn't compulsory. Grin
If it is, they better get my prison cell ready!
TheUndoingProject · 04/01/2021 01:42

You have heard that the virus has mutated? It always amazes me how many people on these threads think they know better than epidemiologists. You’re not special, just follow the rules.

EndemicPanda · 04/01/2021 02:00

It always amazes me how many people on these threads think they know better than epidemiologists.

I don't think any epidemiologist is suggesting that going for a 2 hour walk in the woods without speaking to any strangers is going to spread the virus 🤷‍♀️ This is why it doesn't make sense to impose nationwide limits on the number of times or length of time you can spend exercising outdoors.

If such a rule is necessary for built-up areas then fine, but I'm not going to pay any attention to it when it makes no sense where I live.

OP posts:
Topseyt · 04/01/2021 03:15

There have never been limits on the length and timing of exercise. That was an arbitrary comment by Michael Gove.

You can't break it rule that has never existed, although you can try if you like.

Mally2020 · 04/01/2021 03:22

People saying it was never a rule need to go back and watch the press releases during this timeframe, might not have been law but it was most definitely implied and regulated in most area's to begin with... I live on my own and despite moving area's will continue to walk as much as I can each day with a mask on

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 04/01/2021 03:22

I take my kids fell walking where there's not a soul about. We've found snow this week. I'll be continuing to do that no matter what the rules

shouldistop · 04/01/2021 04:08

What on earth do you need longer than an hour outside every day for anyway - especially in this weather.

Yesterday my dh & 4yo ds went on a 3 hour hillwalk in the morning, it was minus 3 when they set off. In the afternoon we spent 2 hours in the garden.
Why would you not ea

shouldistop · 04/01/2021 04:08

want to spend more than an hour outside? ..*

Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2021 04:44

I love how this thread has turned into competitive outdoorsiness.😂

Drumgley55 · 04/01/2021 05:02

If you need to ask here, AIBU?, in relation to sticking to the rules related to coronavirus, then you probably already know that YABU. The reason it’s gotten so out of control already is down to people who can’t stick to the guidance and carry on however they like.

That said - you’ll most likely do what you’ve already decided to do anyway, and there won’t ever be the resources to enforce sticking to one hour a day outside, so it’s sort of a moot point.

chocolatesweets · 04/01/2021 07:22

I have two under three. No, I won't. They can take me to jail. Where I can have a rest. 😂🙈

User158340 · 04/01/2021 07:24

Rules like this are fucking useless if the bloody borders or schools stay open.
