To say if they bring in the "only one hour a day outside" guidance I am NOT going to follow it

There are rumours on the BBC news that the Government might bring back rules saying you can only exercise outside for an hour a day.

AIBU to ignore it if they do? I followed it last time despite the fact that it was only in guidance (rather than the law) even though it had a negative impact on me and there is an incredibly low chance of the virus being transmitted outside, especially if you keep away from people.

Bringing this rule back whilst schools stay open seems especially ridiculous.

My dogs would not be impressed with an hour walk a day nor would my waistline!

itsgettingweird · 04/01/2021 07:28

It never was a rule.

itsgettingweird · 04/01/2021 07:29

@MabelFurball

What on earth do you need longer than an hour outside every day for anyway - especially in this weather.
I walked along the coast and back for 3 hours yesterday.

I need more than an hour to walk and feel like it's been worth it.

juliainthedeepwater · 04/01/2021 07:31

Haha absolutely no way - I have a dog, a pre-schooler and a baby who only naps in his buggy!! (And lots of safe open space in walking distance)

SomewhatBored · 04/01/2021 07:34

It would make more sense to say you can exercise for as long as you like, but you mustn't travel to exercise - that would avoid the glut of people at beauty spots.

I say this as someone who doesn't live within walking or cycling distance of any beauty spots, so it's not an 'I'm all right Jack' post.

MrsDThomas · 04/01/2021 07:39

I wont be and i didn’t in the summer. Im luck to be able to go for a 2 hour walk and not see a soul. Thats the blessing of a lockdown, it was beautiful

But where's the limit? I can be in the Peak District in 15 minutes - is that too far? It's a longer drive doing the school run.
PimlicoJo · 04/01/2021 08:11

I think the Tier 4 message of 'Stay at Home' has been lost. Many people I know are interpreting it as 'go anywhere you like for your exercise as long as you stay in Tier 4'. I'm in London but have friends who've been driving to the south coast and Surrey hills for walks and meet ups with friends.

There was never a one hour rule, but I think there is an argument for people staying in their local area.

Quite honestly I just want my life back and if it means restrictions now then I'd rather that than constantly limping on with half hearted rules which people ignore.

Dearmaria · 04/01/2021 08:16

No one is timing you OP. Even if it became law to only be outside for an hour a day, how can they police that?
Some people will be happy to spend as much time as possible indoors and others won't. My kids have ADHD among other things and I absolutely need to have them outdoors every day whatever the weather, we go for lots of long walks and lots of running around in parks. We do have a garden too. Being outdoors is important to us.

EndemicPanda · 04/01/2021 08:16

But I don't think this is a sensible "rule" as it will make no difference to the R number (at least in my case and others who are rural/semi-rural and not meeting up with others), whereas schools staying open will contribute significantly to the R number.

I would have that exercise is where you can walk or cycle, no going by car except to shop, work, childcare or to medical facilities.

Easier then to stop people moving about the country.

MrsExpo · 04/01/2021 08:17

I will continue to walk my dog twice daily and attend to the needs of my horse which lives on a nearby farm. This means I will go out at least three times every day - but add a fourth time if I have to shop for essentials. Unless this is going to be strictly policed I really can’t see how it would work.

EndemicPanda · 04/01/2021 08:17

What I mean is, me sticking with this rule has no chance of getting us back to normal life, so I give up and not playing along this time.

OP posts:
draughtycatflap · 04/01/2021 08:19

Wouldn’t bother me. The only exercise I get is moonwalking through the Co-op for a pack of Fig Newtons.

itsgettingweird · 04/01/2021 08:32

It's actually safer for me to walk 2 hours rather than 1.

This is because I'm suburban. 10 minutes from me up the road is miles and miles of farmland. But there's limited ways around and you can't go up and round and back in 40 minutes if you take off the 10 each way to get there.

If I was limited to an hour I'd have to walk the other direction. That is straight towards the town, schools and colleges and supermarkets. Straight into the busy area of town.

Hour walk - I'll meet meet loads of people doing their shopping etc.

1.5/2 hrs - never meet more than 10-20 people and it's open fields so I'm not passing close to anyone.

CharityDingle · 04/01/2021 08:40

@SionnachRua

Really? I don't recall this being the case, and I have complied with all restrictions.

I'm Irish too and I agree, the claim of only being allowed out for an hour a day doesn't ring a single bell for me.

Me neither.
islockdownoveryet · 04/01/2021 08:46

You started a thread about not following a rule that never existed .Hmm
That's fine op you go for your walks with your child and run , I did the same yesterday.

Topseyt · 04/01/2021 09:19

THERE. WAS. NEVER. ANY. SUCH. RULE.

Bloody hell, how many times has that been said on this thread now?

cyclingmad · 04/01/2021 10:05

Grin this is quite hilarious, people are literally going crazy, spending time discussing a rule that never existed and getting worked about how they won't rule it

Lol its madness

Also, apparently, no understanding that different parts of the country are... different. North/South and urban /rural.
contrmary · 04/01/2021 10:22

I'm more worked up about them bringing back the rule that never existed that said we have to boil all food before eating it, including stuff like ice cream. If that rule had existed it would have been pointless and unpleasant and there's no fucking way I'm going to follow it now.

I think we've all been driven around the twist by this whole situation 😔

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 04/01/2021 10:29

People saying it was never a rule need to go back and watch the press releases during this timeframe, might not have been law but it was most definitely implied and regulated in most area's to begin with

People aren't just saying it wasn't a rule - it wasn't. Someone asked Michael Gove how long he thought was reasonable to be outside and he bumbled something about an hour being reasonable, nothing more than one person's hastily thought up response to a question that caught him off guard. Where and how was it regulated 'in most areas'? There are almost 30 million households in the UK, checking when people left home and how long they were out for is impossible.

@chocolatesweets

I have two under three. No, I won't. They can take me to jail. Where I can have a rest. 😂🙈
Ooh it sounds nice doesn't it you get a bed and blanket, and a lovely nap Grin
