To say if they bring in the "only one hour a day outside" guidance I am NOT going to follow it

There are rumours on the BBC news that the Government might bring back rules saying you can only exercise outside for an hour a day.

AIBU to ignore it if they do? I followed it last time despite the fact that it was only in guidance (rather than the law) even though it had a negative impact on me and there is an incredibly low chance of the virus being transmitted outside, especially if you keep away from people.

Bringing this rule back whilst schools stay open seems especially ridiculous.

I am guessing some people have temperatures not in minus figures. Brrrr.

You'll find that you soon warm up if walking briskly! In cold weather I usually start out with a hat, gloves, fleece etc but often end up taking it all off after a mile or so.

I explained upthread a few times why it causes me problems. I won't be walking briskly if the pavements are sheet ice like they have been.

I did loads of walking in the summer lockdown but won't be while it's freezing.

GrandTheftWalrus · 04/01/2021 10:42

On a thread in first lockdown someone said it was an hour you were allowed out for and I asked for proof of where it said that. Funnily enough there was nothing posted.

It isn't compulsory but some people walk everyday whatever the weather, particularly if they have a dog, but you, personally, don't have to and don't need an excuse to get out of it.

itsgettingweird · 04/01/2021 10:45

@cyclingmad

Grin this is quite hilarious, people are literally going crazy, spending time discussing a rule that never existed and getting worked about how they won't rule it

Lol its madness

I remember in lockdown 1 when people still argued about it. GMB they kept saying when you do your 1 hour exercise a day. Doesn't help when the media spout crap.

And another subset of people who felt no one should go out because the next person may touch the same stile, walk last their garden fence and no one should be walking 500m to a corner shop for milk as it's not essential!

Well there are the rules according to the UK Government .... and those according to MN. Too many posts about people breaking rules that never existed outside MN.
Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2021 10:48

I am on the verge of hiding the whole Coronavirus topic as it's all getting bizarre now, but have just noticed this thread is in AIBU anyway. Sad

GrandTheftWalrus · 04/01/2021 10:52

@RockingMyFiftiesNot its quite amusing to see people adamant a rule is in place when it didn't exist. I'm in Scotland and it certainly wasn't wasn't rule here. If it had been I'd never get anywhere as I had a 3.5yr old at start of lockdown who took forever to walk. She's now 4 and runs everywhere so I may manage in an hour Grin

lemonsquashie · 04/01/2021 10:57

Some people would need more than an hour to walk to supermarket and back. Not everyone has a car

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 04/01/2021 10:59

@GrandTheftWalrus I agree totally!

Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2021 10:59

@lemonsquashie

But that would be a walk to get shopping which has always been allowed. Wouldn't class walking to get groceries as exercise so if the non existent rule did exist you could do the hour and get your shopping. Result. Grin
PurpleDaisies · 04/01/2021 11:00

@lemonsquashie

Some people would need more than an hour to walk to supermarket and back. Not everyone has a car
They’d be going out for the essential purpose of shopping. Not exercise.

Anyway, this is irrelevant because the rule never existed in the first place.

Sorry, it just seems like people are adopting extreme positions here regardless of personal circumstances or preference. You can go out for more than an hour but you don't have to.

I remember a ridiculous thread about touching gates on a country walk. Still all this time later we aren't seeing measurable evidence of fomite transmisson

PurpleDaisies · 04/01/2021 11:03

You can go out for more than an hour but you don't have to.

When has anyone suggested you had to be out for more than an hour?

Nobody, but some have given reasons why they can't.

I agree, there's some major defensiveness on this thread, along with the competitive outdoorsiness.

Posters wanting/needing to be out for more than an hour by far outweigh the people like me who wouldn't care if an hour rule was brought in.

Once the weather improves I will be going for walks again seems like a long way off though.

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/01/2021 11:12

Nobody, but some have given reasons why they can't go out at all because it's too cold or whatever. Fine, stay in, they don't have to go out.
I was being light hearted because this thread is getting silly.

Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2021 11:17

This thread is very silly, and in the wrong topic.

I am actually heading out now. To the tip-the glamour! I will energetically throw my bags into the skips and count that as my exercise for the day.

Don’t take longer than an hour. Wink
notalwaysalondoner · 04/01/2021 11:22

No way. I can assess the risk of my trail run in the middle of nowhere with nobody there thanks. It’s ludicrous. I kind of appreciate it in big cities maybe but I still think it’s going too far.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 04/01/2021 11:26

Worth being on this thread just for that comment! Nice one!!

Sparklingbrook · 04/01/2021 11:27

I will do my best @PurpleDaisies Grin

DrCoconut · 04/01/2021 11:27

DS2 is asthmatic and walking outdoors in the cold makes him tight chested. Then his inhalers make him hyperactive. Not good when there is nowhere safe to go and burn energy. We normally rely on soft play or swimming for winter exercise and he's been going stir crazy these holidays. Looking forward to summer and being able to get out properly again.
