Just on BBC news the mayor of Liverpool wants a nationwide lock down again! Even in areas with low transmission to help areas like Liverpool who don't appear to help themselves anyway.
What financial planet do these people live on.

Even Boris has said this morning that "more restrictions are likely" so I'm sure there will be a lockdown soon....

BlueBaubles12 · 03/01/2021 10:25

He’s hardly a lone voice in the wilderness. Loads of people are calling for it.

StealthRoast · 03/01/2021 10:26

Erm... until a few days ago we were in tier 2. How do we not appear to help ourselves?

At one point we were one of the very worst affected areas in the UK.

I’m on the outskirts in a different borough but part of the “Liverpool city region”

The mayor is not generally well liked here but that seems to be a common theme.

nosswith · 03/01/2021 10:26

Start by having proper enforcement of existing restrictions. Not token fines. If you have driven miles just to view the Brecon Beacons or go for a walk, a driving ban. If you are a student and have met up with several friends, no more university place.

Magistrates courts could sit virtually or behind screens, and as was shown with the riots in 2011, can hear cases in a few days if needed.

Rosehip10 · 03/01/2021 10:27

@StealthRoast It's the acting mayor asking for this - the mayor has resigned due to the criminal investigations into him.

sashagabadon · 03/01/2021 10:29

But hang on wasn’t the Liverpool mayor and Andy Burnham all over the news back in October furious that there was a national lockdown in the spring to London’s timetable and what a bad thing that was? Now he is arguing the opposite?

Moondust001 · 03/01/2021 10:32

I'm not supporting him but what's the joke - 50% of Mumsnet is dominated by threads upon which the majority are demanding full lockdown, closing all schools and shutting the borders. And that has been the case since March! It's hardly a lone voice crying in the wilderness, is it?

Frozenintime · 03/01/2021 10:33

He can stop interfering 😡

HappyNewYear2021 · 03/01/2021 10:36

It was a woman so I assume the acting mayor then?

If you read the facts before you posted you would see Liverpool region rates have shot up so will go into tier 4 What do you mean by don't appear to help themselves anyway???? The region did help themselves through the old tier 3 and the last lockdown plus mass testing to get their rates down low but they've increases again since lockdown ended They are calling for the same again (As funded for current tier 4 areas?) to lower their rates again given what they saw happen to the local health service last time round What's so difficult to understandHmm
User158340 · 03/01/2021 10:39

Maybe because Liverpool saw cases there allowed to get out of hand through September and October with no action. The point the mayor is making is to act now before this new variant decimates the rest of the country the way it has the south east, when we have the vaccines in sight.

Just letting it get out of hand only harms the economy more when we're forced to lockdown a week or two later than we needed to (again) which means it takes longer to recover.

HappyNewYear2021 · 03/01/2021 10:39

The joke is why wreck businesses in areas where the rate of infection is low! How will that help Liverpool. Let them work and pay taxes so the ones that cannot work can be helped.

Mumsnet isn't reflected in society. The opinions I see daily on here are much more extreme

OP posts:
TheMarzipanDildo · 03/01/2021 10:39

Liverpool was doing really well until recently- mass testing had been set up and the infection rate was low.

singsingbluesilver · 03/01/2021 10:39

It would stop the idiots like the ones I know who thought it would be fine to nip across to the neighbouring tier on public transport to go to the pub because their local was not allowed to open. Five members of that family now have covid.

Daisy829 · 03/01/2021 10:41

A doctor I know who works at one of the major hospitals has suggested we do a 3 month lockdown, vaccinate & this would all be over. Not ideal but I would take that if it meant getting some normality back quickly. I think by end of jan we will probs be in lockdown again.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/01/2021 10:41

I thought Sage were also asking for this? So not a voice in the wilderness...

XiCi · 03/01/2021 10:41

Oh go away. Another Liverpool bashing thread. Pathetic. And clearly talking utter bullshit.

Even in areas with low transmission to help areas like Liverpool who don't appear to help themselves anyway
Liverpool do have lower rates you idiot. The rates were almost the lowest in the country a couple of weeks ago after us being in tier 3 and a concerted effort across the city to engage in rapid testing. Comparatively with the rest of the UK the rates are still low.Go and look at the UK covid chart.
I'm in the Liverpool City Region and at the beginning of December the virus was considered suppressed in my area (less than 2 active cases). Now we're back up to about 200 per 100,000. Shes worried about exponential growth as rates are increasing rapidly. Not difficult to understand is it Confused

HappyNewYear2021 · 03/01/2021 10:42

I think that the reason some are no longer following guidelines is that most probably realise they are not at risk from the virus and are guideline/rules bored now.
I am still following the guidelines but increasingly see more and more that cannot be bothered. The more rules in areas with low transmission the less people will bother.

Well I live in the region and cases are flying up here in part because people were turning up from higher tiers so they could take advantage of more things being open.

Liverpool as a result were forced out of tier 2 and into 3 and as the only area in the north west not in tier 4, people are still turning up here to go shopping and other things that are out of bounds in tier 4.

With this new variant cases fly up dramatically quickly, which makes it more important to act before it gets out of hand. We were in a dire situation here with hospitals a few months back and due to direct intervention and restrictions got it back under control again. Without more restrictions coming in we'll be in the same boat again in 2-3 weeks. You can't just wish the problem away.

Panickingpavlova · 03/01/2021 10:43

Daisy, isn't that worth 3 months of pain for? This is the hardest time of year anyway?

Where do you live OP, because we're all in tier 3 at least unless your on the Isles of scilly so its a bit of a moot point. Also what happened in Liverpool when rates were very low here was that everyone from surrounding tier 3 and 4 areas went there to shop, eat and drink and rates started to increase again. Maybe you'd like that for your home town?

The vaccine does need to be rolled out quicker

This is a big reason why the rates in the city have shot back up. Lime Street station has been bursting the last few weeks with these visitors.

It was a mistake not to put Liverpool into tier 3 when the tiers were previously reviewed before Christmas. Loads of people from outside the area turned up here for their Christmas parties.

Interested to learn more about these areas where rates are low Confused - almost all of the country is tier 3/4 anyway.

Things are really bad, sadly.
