What a joke....Liverpool mayor wants nationwide lock down

Just on BBC news the mayor of Liverpool wants a nationwide lock down again! Even in areas with low transmission to help areas like Liverpool who don't appear to help themselves anyway.
What financial planet do these people live on.

OP posts:

I'm in a 'Tier 5' area. Went to supermarket yesterday and there were families shopping, people walking in without sanitising their hands, some without masks, and some not wearing their masks properly, and not much social distancing. Grim.

I appreciate not everyone can wear a mask, or can nip out for essentials without taking their DC.

Just offering a hand hold to Liverpudlian MNetters from a "frequently-bashed' Londoner Flowers (I'm a massive Liverpool FC fan btw Smile).

Absolutely. Mumsnet is a parallel universe.

I don't think they are. For one thing, there are many more people on MN than any one of us is likely to know in real life so the opinions of many are concentrated into what are in the wider scheme of things (though it might not seem like it) just a few threads.

And for another thing, the whole point of MN is that it provides a platform for people to express their views, whereas IRL you don't have this level of debate. People are getting on with their lives as best they can, and there's almost no face to face communication.

If you want to see extreme views, try reading Twitter.

LindaEllen · 03/01/2021 11:57

To be honest, you can fuck off with 'don't appear to help themselves'. This isn't an 'us and them' situation.

We're part of 'Liverpool City Region' as far as lockdowns are concerned, our cases have always been low, yet we've had to suck up the rules for the whole area.

The majority of people are sticking to the rules, like any other area. You're only spouting this crap because you've seen a few parties in the paper - you could find that anywhere.

Don't allow your press to place the blame where it shouldn't be placed.

If it had come from schools then surely we would have been seeing rising figures for some time. Not figures that were falling

The only difference has been shutting everything down so people instead of chatting to friends over a SD coffee on separate tables at a coffee shop they are going to peoples houses and sitting round the single coffee table.
It has forced a lot more people into supermarkets as they are now the only shops open you can buy clothing etc.

Whilst we have rules about what we can and can’t do but ultimately people are getting weary of it all.

We have had a 4 month lockdown and that didn’t work. We had a 4 week lockdown snd that made things worse not better. We have now been locked down on tier 4 for 2 weeks and our figures are worse than ever

kingkuta · 03/01/2021 11:58

Flowers back at you ConfusedcomMum. Ive lived in both London and Liverpool for long periods in my life, both great cities that seem to get unwarranted 'bashings' on here. As if we haven't all got enough to deal with without small minded, prejudiced idiots trying to stir the pot!!

ZippedyDooDa · 03/01/2021 11:58

I totally support a full national lockdown; combined with a mass vaccination programme. We need to get this situation under control - and time and again we see that localised, patchwork restrictions do not work because people from the higher-rate areas just then go to the lower-rate areas to shop, eat out etc, and spread the virus.

GabsAlot · 03/01/2021 12:02

i do think everyone should be in the same tier whatever that is

dworky · 03/01/2021 12:05

Perfectly reasonable, in fact.

Stinkyjellycat · 03/01/2021 12:08

Rates in Liverpool and particularly the wider metro area have gone up very dramatically in a short space of time. Rates are not low there any more.

Purplethrow · 03/01/2021 12:08

I’m in tier 4 but you wouldn’t know it , neighbours continually having people round, went for a walk and the park was full of groups of people standing together chatting , the roads are no quieter than an ordinary day either.

reformedcharacters · 03/01/2021 12:08

Thanks ConfusedcomMum

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/01/2021 12:14

I live in an area with low numbers. We are in Tier 4 because if the rate of new cases.

If we stay sensible our number of cases will remain relatively low.

As has been explained squillions of times, low incidence areas require hard lockdowns just as much as high incidence areas, usually because we are rural and have fewer icu beds.

It does help to remember the idea is to control rate rather than incidence of infection.

MeredithGreysScalpel · 03/01/2021 12:15

OP - could you please explain your comment about Liverpool not helping itself? Unless your hairy hands are preventing you from doing so, of course.

Oliversmumsarmy · 03/01/2021 12:18

In my area the lockdowns have just made the numbers go up dramatically not down

Bathroom12345 · 03/01/2021 12:18

I think we should become much stricter on the lockdowns. No mask/no entry. I am fed up seeing people who are either not wearing masks or going en masse to the shops.

They cannot all be single parents (and clearly arent when there is more than one adult in the group!) or exempt fro masking wearing.

Even those young fools who were escorted from an illegal party over NYE didnt look that bothered.

Its got to become totally unacceptable to think you are different because of xx reason. It wont be for long if we stick to this.

I suspect now that its the inter mixing with family/friends etc that is doing this and that parent with the stupid 17 year old on another thread who is doing what the hell she likes and not taking any notice of anyone. Words fail me. I understand that grounding 17 year olds is not easy but presumably they still live with you. Take BB away, if you pay for their phone that would go to. Be the parent rather than wringing your hands and wondering what to do...

I would be deeply ashamed if my grown up children did this. I would be literally reading them the riot act and taking away whatever I could. Hit them where it hurts. Shame their behaviour.

IEat · 03/01/2021 12:26

What do you suggest we do ?

torquewench · 03/01/2021 12:27

I was cycling along Hope Street over Christmas when I saw a police car pull over a car and question the driver as to why his car was registered to an address out of the area (couldnt hear where). Theres also been lots of articles in the local rag about taxi drivers licensed in higher tier areas such as Wolverhampton and Manchester being stopped in Liverpool and having their licenses suspended. But that's "Liverpool" not helping itself, I suppose Hmm

rooarsome · 03/01/2021 12:28

Liverpool didn't help themselves? Our rates were comparatively low, however people from surrounding areas in higher tiers saw it as an opportunity to go shopping/eating in the region.

ChloeCrocodile · 03/01/2021 12:30

We have had a 4 month lockdown and that didn’t work.

This is bollocks. The original 4 month lockdown absolutely did work. So much so that most people spent July and august being able to do pretty much whatever we wanted. The virus didn’t disappear entirely, but that was never the purpose of the lockdown.

AlwaysLatte · 03/01/2021 12:34

Surely the people in the low tier areas want to prevent the virus surging through like it did for us in tier 4? It was too late for us - the damage was done by the time the extra restrictions were put in. Absolutely right to act sooner - a full lockdown is the only thing to do.

AlwaysLatte · 03/01/2021 12:35

We have had a 4 month lockdown and that didn’t work.
It absolutely did. Take a look at the data.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 03/01/2021 12:36

On the behalf of the populace of the Liverpool City Region, fuck right off OP

The prejudice that existed against Liverpool was wrong in the 80s and generated by a government looking to victim blame.

Still harbouring sneery superior outdated ideas about Liverpool just because that's what a lot of people think is ignorant.

I smile through gritted teeth every time someone says to me "Gosh! I went to Liverpool recently it was so lovely, I was so surprised"

Why were you surprised?

Ingrained prejudice.

BLTLover · 03/01/2021 12:39

Maybe the op just doesnt like Liverpool? For her information everyone I know is sticking to the rules and getting tested regularly.
