What a joke....Liverpool mayor wants nationwide lock down

Just on BBC news the mayor of Liverpool wants a nationwide lock down again! Even in areas with low transmission to help areas like Liverpool who don't appear to help themselves anyway.
What financial planet do these people live on.

OP posts:
CountessFrog · 03/01/2021 10:50

It was rather short sighted to put surrounding areas into a lower tier and leave shops open in Liverpool. In January.

Who’d ever have thought that people in surrounding areas would have gone into Liverpool, like they always do.

Policy makers are thick.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 03/01/2021 10:51

@sashagabadon

But hang on wasn’t the Liverpool mayor and Andy Burnham all over the news back in October furious that there was a national lockdown in the spring to London’s timetable and what a bad thing that was? Now he is arguing the opposite?
At that time, Boris wanted to put Manchester and Liverpool in higher lockdown, whilst saying that there was no more money to extend the furlough and other support schemes, which were due to come to an end. Burnham and others argued that this was unfair and if the government wanted to impose restrictions then those affected should not be penalised. Now London and the SE have been hit badly the money has suddenly been found (surprise, surprise), and it's been extended to April, it is now more level playing field.
christinarossetti19 · 03/01/2021 10:53

I can see the Mayor's point tbh.

I know rates are lower than London and the SE, but it worries me that we'll see the same pattern as last year with the new variant.

It ripping through London then gradually making its way through the rest of the country.

kingkuta · 03/01/2021 10:53

Interested to learn more about these areas where rates are low- almost all of the country is tier 3/4 anyway
Yes please do enlighten us as to where you live where rates are ao low that you think the idea of a lockdown is 'a joke'. You do read and watch the news right?

trappedsincesundaymorn · 03/01/2021 10:58

We, in the SW had the lowest rates of all in March but we still had to lock down with the rest of the country then so why should those in lower tiers be exempt now? The tier system clearly isn't working so what's the alternative?

And when Liverpool gets high cases it suffers as the hospitals can't cope, as there tends to be a higher rate of hospitalisations than the south (with less capacity than certainly London).

Areas in the south are over 1000 per 100k which is horrendous, but that would be even more catastrophic in other areas of the country. Our hospitals were on their knees a couple of months back and we peaked about 700.

ChristmasinJune · 03/01/2021 10:59

In what way does Liverpool "not help itself?"
I genuinely don't understand your reasoning.

We were the first city put into Tier 3 (Andy Burnham fought it but Joe Anderson did not) there was a high level of compliance (a few idiots, yes, but you get that in any area) so our numbers dropped steeply. This was helped by the mass testing pilot which, again, Liverpool people supported extremely well. Our numbers dropped to 80/100000. Numbers are now rising because we've unwittingly played host to the Christmas shopping trips and nights out for the rest of the North West. Plus, the new strain (no other areas are being told that they "don't help themselves" when their numbers go up)
I think the deputy mayor is right in what she is asking. Shut down now, don't wait until the catastrophe has happened and then flounder around. Makes sense to me!!

One of the biggest problems with the tier system is selfish fuckers will just cross from higher tier to lower tier.
Lifeispassingby · 03/01/2021 11:02

Tier 4 in pretty much lockdown, esp where schools are shut, the only difference is nurseries bad special schools are open

christinarossetti19 · 03/01/2021 11:02

It's not just 'selfish fuckers' crossing Tiers, it's people who work or whose children go to school between Tiers.

CountessFrog · 03/01/2021 11:03

I’d also be interested to know in what way Liverpool ‘doesnt help itself.’

I think they showed that mass testing works, they co-operated with that and it was a great way to help themselves.

Or is somebody making a generalisation about people from Liverpool?

inquietant · 03/01/2021 11:03

Agree tiers don't work, we all have to pull together to get the highest rates down.

kingkuta · 03/01/2021 11:04

I want to know this as well, I'm curious. Can you please tell us what you mean by this OP?

In addition, yes. England is very connected and a lot of people work in towns or cities they don't live in.

I think we can just pass that off as the OP's prejudice that many have and leave it at that.
kingkuta · 03/01/2021 11:06

Or is it that you just started this thread to have a nasty, unwarranted little dig at people from Liverpool based on no reason at all apart from your own prejudice Hmm

trappedsincesundaymorn · 03/01/2021 11:06

I think you missed out the word "some in that sentence. I work in a different tier to where I live (I'm in 4 work is in 3, I can't work from home and I'm classed as a critical worker. Not all of us are "selfish fuckers", some of us have no choice.

Thewiseoneincognito · 03/01/2021 11:07

As someone mentioned previously we should have stronger harsh punishments for rule breaking, the threat of a fine means fuck all. A GP note should be required for mask exemption otherwise tough shit get one on. Places skirting retail rules like Marks and Spencer’s with half their store fully open need to be restricted to discourage browsers. We also need some horrific weather to keep people in their homes 🙏🏻

Exactly. High/low rates we all need to be doing the same thing it makes no sense that a virus is spreading and we all living by different restrictions... does the virus work in different ways for each tier?

I would rather a lockdown I don’t want to be faffing around in the new year with all this.

kingkuta · 03/01/2021 11:10

I think when talking about 'selfish fuckers' its people who can't stay ar home and shop online, they just have to get in their car and go to the crappy Next sales in person to pick up a cheap pair of slippers or whatever. Or people that travel in just to go to pubs and get pissed or have a meal in a restaurant.

kingkuta · 03/01/2021 11:10

Thats why we should all be in the same tier or all be locked down

christinarossetti19 · 03/01/2021 11:11

My mum was recently in a Tier 2 area, admitting into hospital in a Tier 4 area less than 5 miles away.

Many of the staff, surprise, surprise, also moved between the different Tiers as they went to and from work.

Crinkle77 · 03/01/2021 11:11

@XiCi

Oh go away. Another Liverpool bashing thread. Pathetic. And clearly talking utter bullshit.

Even in areas with low transmission to help areas like Liverpool who don't appear to help themselves anyway
Liverpool do have lower rates you idiot. The rates were almost the lowest in the country a couple of weeks ago after us being in tier 3 and a concerted effort across the city to engage in rapid testing. Comparatively with the rest of the UK the rates are still low.Go and look at the UK covid chart.
I'm in the Liverpool City Region and at the beginning of December the virus was considered suppressed in my area (less than 2 active cases). Now we're back up to about 200 per 100,000. Shes worried about exponential growth as rates are increasing rapidly. Not difficult to understand is it Confused

Yep this. Where are you from OP?

Possibly, although the data seems very clear that schools have been the main driver of community transmission over the last few months and they're full of children going to school and teaching and auxillary staff going to work.

Most transmission doesn't seem to be by people who are 'breaking the rules'. It's people going about their daily completely lawful business.

Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of people commute for work.

I'm referring to people traveling outside their own tier for leisure; purely for a piss up or to eat out when the pubs and restaurants, or shops, are closed where they live. A lot of people have been doing this which makes a mockery of the tier system.
