Scaremongering threads about children - RCPCH have responded to worrying Twitter claims

The RCPCH have responded to reassure parents and refute the claims on twitter and elsewhere about increased numbers of children with serious covid19 in ICUs. Please, if you’re worried about your children, read this and feel better. And if you’re one of the ones perpetuating unsubstantiated reports to further an agenda, please get in the sea.

@StealthPolarBear

Finkking, if nasa tried to refute "earth is flat" type rubbish with an image of the earth from space they'd get "huh, well it's all flat round where we are"

[quote tickertyboo]Laura Duffel spoke about what she had experienced. I would save my ire for this lot rather than her.

When I click that link I can't find anything by her? Can you point tour please?

NaughtipussMaximus

Concerned parents are disgusting, now?

Don't be ridiculous. Yes, that faux disgust is extremely disingenuous.

Pomegranatespompom · 02/01/2021 22:22

@Satsumatrifle have you read the statements from the paediatricians? The matron was not correct.

Spiratedaway · 02/01/2021 22:26

I was petrified by this but my son was also in hospital with bronc 5 years ago and it was rammed ....... I can't get scared about my kids of 2 and 6 my mental health is dipping already

pom that has nothing to do with the OP's comment: The way some posters tried to hijack this whole thing to further their agenda was disgusting.

Concerned parents were on those threads. They were not hijacking anything. They were worried. This polarising attitude helps no one.

It is recognised that children are being affected more in this wave. What that amounts to nationwide, or even London wide, is not yet clear. I don't know what the matron was basing her comments on and it's good to hear there are others who haven't had that experience.

Baileysforchristmas · 02/01/2021 22:34

The media have a lot to answer forwith half information or false information, it doesn’t help when there is such little information about the new variant effecting children, how is it spreading more between children? Then there is the 8 year old who has died but no one knows what from? Yes she had Covid but did she die from a terminal illness which she had before she caught Covid? Half the information is very dangerous as people will make up the other half to suit their agenda.

lljkk · 02/01/2021 22:41

Duffel seems to have deleted all her tweets.
I wish her well and hope these fears blow over soon.

sashagabadon · 02/01/2021 22:46

Sounds like the matron spoke out of turn and got carried away with being on the radio. No excuse as she should be truthful in what she says or she just gives ammunition to those that don’t believe in Covid etc. The opposite of what I assume she wants to achieve.
But ultimately the media that invited her on and reported her comments without checking she was not exaggerating are to blame.

NaughtipussMaximus · 02/01/2021 22:47

I’ve already clarified I wasn’t referring to concerned parents, but rather to a few bad actors. So behave.

I can still see her tweets...

So what is the consensus now? I don't understand why she would lie? She is a matron of a ward, that's a senior position, why would she make it all up?

None of this makes sense

NaughtipussMaximus · 02/01/2021 22:49

Your twisting of my words to fit your own agenda is the kind of thing I was actually referring to. Polarising indeed.

I thought this series of tweets from Faisal Islam was interesting.

The numbers of admissions for young children is higher than in April - 135 under 5s admitted in the peak week in December, vs. 86 in the peak week of April - but still extremely low overall.

Was that a response to my message?

If so, I have no agenda, I'm a parent and that is all....I genuinely have no idea what to believe now.

Is the consensus that she was exaggerating? I mean that's a hell of an exaggeration...or was it the case in her particular ward and nowhere else?

I'm just trying to make sense of it

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/01/2021 23:01

@Puzzledandpissedoff

It was not very pleasant that's for sure

No, and neither were the insults being flung around, or the accusations that HQ were involved in a cover-up and acting as a mouthpiece for the DoH ... and all over a newspaper piece which was questioned even at the time and since seems to have thoroughly discredited

Agreed. There was appalling rudeness and insults flung at MNHQ in general and one mod in particular.

I hope all those posters were banned.

The nurse has also shown an astonishing lack of professionalism and judgement.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/01/2021 23:02

There was nothing zapped that wasn't a taat

I'm pretty sure HQ said one of them was from a PBP ...?

Pomegranatespompom · 02/01/2021 23:08

She was possibly misquoted or out of her depth. I’m sure we all know people at work who think they know everything. I expect she’ll be investigated- she’s broken the code of conduct.
Shame for her but she should have been more careful.

Snowrabbit · 02/01/2021 23:12

It's obvious this was a nurse who was enjoying her time in the spotlight and wanted to make a "big revelation " Clearly unstable. Stable, reliable professionals do not go on the radio saying such things. Way out of her depth and speaking out of turn. She should be disciplined. Sadly you do find some bad apples in nursing, who are attracted for all the wrong reasons. You of course get bad doctors too, but the it's at a different intellectual level. There are some utterly amazing nurses out there but some real horrors too.

louisejxxx · 02/01/2021 23:14

Thank you for posting this OP - I am another who was really alarmed with all the TAATs popping up left, right and centre after the original thread was deleted last night.

bumbleymummy · 02/01/2021 23:17

Thank goodness they’re making an attempt to combat the scaremongering.

Pomegranatespompom · 02/01/2021 23:18

Actually just read her Twitter - absolutely disgraceful behaviour.
Many comments talking about her political sympathies. Coincides with all the school debates.
She’s been very silly, did she think people wouldn’t check?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/01/2021 23:26

Actually just read her Twitter - absolutely disgraceful behaviour

So have I, though I usually avoid it like the plague and wish I'd continued

It certainly puts yesterday's comments in some sort of context ...
