Scaremongering threads about children - RCPCH have responded to worrying Twitter claims

The RCPCH have responded to reassure parents and refute the claims on twitter and elsewhere about increased numbers of children with serious covid19 in ICUs. Please, if you’re worried about your children, read this and feel better. And if you’re one of the ones perpetuating unsubstantiated reports to further an agenda, please get in the sea.

Her information is either the truth or a lie and if they cannot find these wards of children poorly with covid then it is evidently a lie and a very nasty one at that.

DS(6) came down from bed last night saying he was all stuffy I checked and he had a slightly raised temp for him I spent the rest of the night listening to him breathing and waiting for a cough. Freaked right out and although I am prone to anxiety so are lots of people especially now.

Her lies will have incited people to panic and you won't be able to backpeddle completely either, this will influence a lot of peoples decisions and have them keeping their dc locked up safe

Pomegranatespompom · 02/01/2021 20:49

On bbc news website - 4 paediatric consultants from different London trusts, all reiterating no increased cases in paeds. Sorry - can’t link, not it savvy.

herecomesthsun · 02/01/2021 20:52

In the Guardian - an article saying that staff are under pressure not to talk to the media about any pressures on the service due to covid "staff claim they have been threatened with disciplinary action or even dismissal if they put their head above the parapet." - but not particularly in relation to paediatric wards.

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2021 20:54

People don't like facts and figures though. On the thread about a pandemic baby boom I posted the data showing that there's no evidence to support that so far, nationally or regionally. Dismissed and ignored in favour of a couple of people who felt sure there was a baby boom.

OrangeSamphire · 02/01/2021 20:54

Sadly my experiences both working in the NHS (and also having two children with varying reasons to have been in hospital more than most) have shown me that there are nurses who can and do lie, and are willing to commit it to record too.

The false deification of nurses in this country leads us to have the wool pulled over our eyes too many times.

Don't mean to be rude. Which is actually unusual for me. Do you not think you should start your own thread with all these lovely little bits of information you are drip feeding us. I think people here are expressing their relief that last nights drama is over for a bit.

@NaughtipussMaximus

I agree with PPs. The way some posters tried to hijack this whole thing to further their agenda was disgusting.

Were people trying to play to an agenda?

There were mainly just a lot of worried parents wondering whether or not it was true.

Parents aren't journalists...if a registered nurse reports something on a radio show that is then shared and reported by the Telegraph I think it's fair that parents expressed some concern about whether it was true and what it meant if it was.

True
NaughtipussMaximus · 02/01/2021 21:04

@umpteennamechanges I think there were a lot of scared parents and some bad faith posters with an agenda.

Is this what all the TAATs were about last night? as soon as one went , another one popped up asking why?

Pomegranatespompom · 02/01/2021 21:08

There seemed to be a few posters who used the information to push the schools issues.

Nicketynac · 02/01/2021 21:14

@Panickingpavlova I work in a PICU and we are having our quietest winter ever. The "normal" respiratory infections aren't being seen thankfully so we have plenty of room.
I'm not making predictions of whether/ how long that will continue but for now certainly no need to panic.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 02/01/2021 21:17

Of course parents were expressing views, worries and opinions. I think we all expect that but there is a line between that and what some posters do. Sowing miss information is dangerous and upsetting at times like these.

herecomesthsun · 02/01/2021 21:20

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum

No, I am discussing the general theme of this thread, thanks, which is covid, the pressures on the NHS and how doctors are conveying their concerns to the media (mostly in relation to paeds?)

Yes, there was nothing zapped that wasn't a taat. Some thought discussion was being closed down but MNHQ only deleted taat's and reinstated the others. None were deleted as suggested here because the info wasn't true, it was a discussion.
Pomegranatespompom · 02/01/2021 21:23

And yet you ignored all the ouster’s saying it wasn’t true.

Have you read the title of the thread

I am not the boss of you though Grin

Yes! On another thread one poster was complaining about too many dc. I said well the UK birth rate is actually X. Another poster replied well all my neighbours & lots of celebs have more than 2.

JanuaryChill · 02/01/2021 21:43

@Nousernameforme so did you get yr DC tested today? As they had a temperature?

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2021 21:50

Finkking, if nasa tried to refute "earth is flat" type rubbish with an image of the earth from space they'd get "huh, well it's all flat round where we are"

Nousernameforme · 02/01/2021 21:54

I said a slightly raised temp for him. As in he usually runs at 36.3 according to our thermometer and last night was at 36.8. I have checked him 3 times today and he is back to 36.3 and no sign of a cough. So no I haven't.

Satsumatrifle · 02/01/2021 21:55

Oh, behave.

tickertyboo · 02/01/2021 22:03

Laura Duffel spoke about what she had experienced. I would save my ire for this lot rather than her.

I’m sorry, I’m not sure what you mean there, @Satsumatrifle. Are you accusing me of posting this thread in bad faith?
