Scaremongering threads about children - RCPCH have responded to worrying Twitter claims

The RCPCH have responded to reassure parents and refute the claims on twitter and elsewhere about increased numbers of children with serious covid19 in ICUs. Please, if you’re worried about your children, read this and feel better. And if you’re one of the ones perpetuating unsubstantiated reports to further an agenda, please get in the sea.

Puzzled,.
Have you even heard it?

It was a live clip from llb radio.

She was speaking... How can people comment without even knowing what the substance is.

Jrobhatch29 · 02/01/2021 19:14

Appalling perhaps, but predictable - and before we blame "everywhere else" let's not forget the carry-on here, with folk instantly going from 0 to 100, PBPs piling in and several scaremongering threads deleted

It was not very pleasant that's for sure.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/01/2021 19:18

Hang on, I thought we were talking about the Telegraph article which was later pulled but not before it had been plastered all over SM, including here?

That's why I mentioned Twitter and wondered if it had been hacked ...

The telegraph article came on the heels of the interview. Which is my understanding. She said it on lbc then the telegraph picked it up and it grew legs from there. The telegraph pulled it because they realised they shouldn't put unsubstantiated hearsay in the press....

@Indecisive12

She’ll be sacked!
In my experience people are rarely sacked when they should be in the NHS. She will be moved sideways and put somewhere out of the way.

She should be sacked, but she won't be. That's one of the biggest problems with the national health service. (Yes I have working experience of this)

Russellbrandshair · 02/01/2021 19:22

It's appalling that the quote from the nurse got so much traction in the media without fact checking

Agree. It’s disgraceful. She should be sacked in my opinion. Enough people are suffering anxiety and mental health issues due to the pandemic already.
I knew if it was that bad it would have been in the media.

No, and neither were the insults being flung around, or the accusations that HQ were involved in a cover-up and acting as a mouthpiece for the DoH ... and all over a newspaper piece which was questioned even at the time and since seems to have thoroughly discredited

MrsMiaWallis · 02/01/2021 19:26

Thanks for posting this OP.

Tbf it wasnt reported at all in The Times, so I assumed there was a good chance it was bollocks.
Barbie222 · 02/01/2021 19:29

@Satsumatrifle

Greater numbers of children with Covid due to the new variant will result in increased admissions to some extent and the NHS is loudly warning that it's not equipped. Let's not kid ourselves.
This, I thought this was the issue she was highlighting, not that there is additional risk. The hospitals only have a certain capacity, paediatric of otherwise. I'd rather not see children sent up and down the country, or adults and children in the same wards, or god forbid, hard decisions about who gets treatment.
Jetatyeovilaerodrome · 02/01/2021 19:29

This is nuts - so she was lying/exaggerating?!

She wasn't the same woman who was doing the rounds on that WhatsApp message about the ambulances back in April was she? Grin

sashagabadon · 02/01/2021 19:30

It seems she thinks she some sort of spokeswoman, having campaigned for parking charges for nhs staff previously (fair enough campaign) but maybe they went to her head! There are a few medics in social media trying to get media careers.
I actually blame the radio show (Adrian chiles I think it was) for not checking what she was going to claim and checking with her it was actually true and posting it in a sound bite on their Twitter page. So irresponsible.
It plays into the hands of the Covid is fake guys.
It reminds me of the labour no that did a care home shift then claimed there was no ppe and the care home refuted her claim and said they had plenty. Made her look an idiot and a liar and didn’t do anything to help the care homes that actually didn’t have ppe

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/01/2021 19:32

She said it on lbc then the telegraph picked it up and it grew legs from there

Ah - thanks, VidaLoki; I'd never even heard of LBC and honestly thought it originated in the Torygraph
I'd have hoped that even they would have better journalistic standards than this, but apparently not ... which just goes to underline the need to double check much of what the media churns out

Satsumatrifle · 02/01/2021 19:34

Exactly Barbie. There seems to be a kind of mass consolation going on that requires dismantling her remarks-but nothing will change this reality.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 02/01/2021 19:34

I would like to say I can't believe what happened on here last night but sadly I can.

People are far to quick to believe this rubbish if it backs up their opinion. Which leaves others quite often worried and scared.

Just glad the data and statistics lot were about to give some decent factual information on admissions.

There are others on this site that should hang their head in shame because I have no doubt they know it is rubbish. However have used it to push there own agenda. Doesn't matter if they weren't the original posters.

We are know going to have posters referencing this or similar for weeks.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 02/01/2021 19:35

This is exactly why people don’t know what to believe anymore. This claim which has now been disputed and the inflated numbers before the second lockdown in November. There seems to be more and more lies and over exaggerations as time goes on, no wonder people are fed up.

andweallsingalong · 02/01/2021 19:36

Sorry to sound dense, but could someone please explain who the RCPCH are?

I've read the press release, skimmed their home page, about us and this thread and all I can find is the accronim and hints that they're some sort of college / industry membership group.

Pomegranatespompom · 02/01/2021 19:37

@Satsumatrifle @Barbie222 there is plenty of capacity for paediatric patients. People can be assured about this.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/01/2021 19:39

If you mean carrying on quoting the matron's comments as if they were gospel then I agree

IMO the only thing to do with this kind of scaremongering nonsense is report. I can count the times I've done it recently on the fingers of one hand ... until last night that is
