Yes, Fuzzypuffling, my parents, both over 80, are in a different area and they haven't even started with the over 80s there yet. I'm thinking that they're just doing what they can in different areas.

TheChineseChicken · 09/01/2021 20:19

@FuzzyPuffling

See, that's lovely for individuals, but postcode lottery for other areas where the over 80s have scarcely been touched yet, and there's no further availability of vaccines.

What could the country do about the inconsistencies?

I wonder if they should do over 80s i areas, then stop and send any vaccines to areas where the over 80s haven't been done yet. Just so there is more equality country wide. I dread there being a north/south divide. (Or a SE/ everywhere else divide)

I think the problem with that is, in the time that would be spent working out where spare vaccines could go and sending them there, large number of people could be vaccinated, slowing things down. I would hope that distribution has been proportionate to the number of people locally to be jabbed but that areas with smaller target populations will inherently churn through them quicker than other areas
tobee · 09/01/2021 20:21

Don't want to be a downer on here but you'd have hoped the logistics would've been already in place? Maybe because different health authorities? Dunno

Spiratedaway · 09/01/2021 20:30

My dad is 74 so hopefully soon

pinkpetal2 · 09/01/2021 20:37

My granddad was vaccinated today he was 80 last month I'm hoping my nan will be soon she's 79 though.

FuzzyPuffling · 09/01/2021 20:45

My group of GP practices have said they have 3400 over 80s, so they know their numbers. They got 975 Pfizers in mid December and have had a batch (not sure how many that is) OxAZ. So it is juyst a case of sorting the logistics...."That bit of the country needs 3400 straight away, now who only needs 500?"

I am getting more concerned about the logisitic issues and as a PP said, you think they would have got this information earlier in the process. I'm just thinking out loud here - not trying to be a Debbie Downer.

Our over 80s are still waiting. One practice has said end of January..

EngineeringFix · 09/01/2021 21:47

However I did hope they were just managing expectations (and heading off any phone calls) and will get their quicker.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/01/2021 22:02

Fuzzy

I would imagine it’s the GP place named after the river. I honestly don’t know. Its probably whichever is the oldest practice in the town.

She got the Pfizer vaccine. She was among the first to be vaccinated which surprised us. As I said no health issues and very fit.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 10/01/2021 00:07

@FifeQuine

We live in a smallish town in Scotland. (Clue in the username....) DH had to visit the doctor this week (he has shingles!!) and the doctor told him that all over 80s in this area will be done next week, then they'll start on the next group. They are ready to go. Very positive!!
That's brilliant - I'm also in a small Fife town, would love this to be us!

My Grandma is in her 90s and due this week with the scaling up of the vaccination program and the recruitment of more vaccinators and marshals. And they had to wait for the doctors to put a tent up to vaccinate people in and it was that that was the delay apparently. East Anglia so not a SE decide hopefully.

If Gloucester have whizzed through their vaccinations I wonder if that is related to either boots or super drug vaccinating there? They are very speedy and well practiced with the flu jab in the pharmacies after all.

Wherediditgo · 10/01/2021 07:25

Just read this fascinating article on BBC - it’s like a brief walk through the whole of 2020 and how the science community has handled it the whole way. Fascinating and positive in equal measure:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-55565284

Also makes you realise just how far we have come since the last pandemic. For example, the discovery of DNA and the creation of the World Wide Web in the last century have both had a massively positive impact on the speed of which the vaccines have been produced!

AlexandraEiffel · 10/01/2021 08:29

@notevenat20

My dad (75) has his appointment for later in the week. Made me very emotional. My mum is 74 so has to wait a bit.

Ooh that's exciting! That means they must have done everyone over 80 in your area. That's very good news. Whereabouts?

Home counties/London area. Their rates are massive which has been worrying
MarcelineMissouri · 10/01/2021 09:56

Positive numbers from the vaccine roll out

Good News Thread Number 4. Because that positivity just keeps on coming!

Yes I thought so too. It’s been a good week if we can vaccinate more people this week than last month.

It’s really great news. But honestly, if a Daily Mail puts the word “only” in front of that 2m, I’ll scream!!

Frazzled2207 · 10/01/2021 10:34

There are two groups of gp
Practices around here and one has been going since almost the very beginning and has indeed sorted almost all the over 80s. The other has not received a single delivery yet though expects to this week. So not so much a postcode lottery as depends on your gp practice. I do wonder if the earlier ones were more proactive in their organisation-
More likely there just wasn’t enough stuff to go round

Yes, I wonder if the practices had to submit an application for doses and that some were quicker off the mark than others
TeaInTheGarden · 10/01/2021 10:50

Really can’t wait for vaccinations daily stats starting tomorrow, sad I know! But will be lovely to have some positive stats to focus on.
If we are vaccinating 200,000 a day, that’s more than the virus is infecting 🎉

That’s truly wonderful Marceline.
‘- More people vaccinated in the last week than in the whole of the first month’ is incredible.
