I will be working in a Haringey school travelling from southwark. Absolute madness.
Oh BTW Haringey has one of the highest deprivation rates its a very poor area (certainly not full of yummy mummies)

Eng123 · 30/12/2020 18:27

I can't believe people are still calling for schools to be closed! My children need their education, once everything else is closed then and only then should schools close.

Whattheactual20201 · 30/12/2020 18:28

@Eng123 mostly everting is closed what else can they close in tier 4 areas?

Lairyfightzzzz · 30/12/2020 18:28

Fuck teachers and school staff eh.

Barbie222 · 30/12/2020 18:29

The glaring question is: what happens when the rates all rise in the neighbouring councils? This is the whole problem with tiers - we can't get out, just sucked further in. Now the ground's set they can quietly add more areas to the contingency list whenever they like, without a fuss, and you'll only know when your school sends you a text on Sunday night.

sima74 · 30/12/2020 18:31

Those primaries that are open but surrounding areas closed it may well be because in the past few months they have had lower cases within the school even though cases outside are higher? Just a guess

TurquoiseDress · 30/12/2020 18:31

Thanks v much for posting this OP

Oh well, at least we know now and not just endless speculation.

DC1 is in year 2 and I really cannot bear the thought of endless months off at home; I am a key worker, DH is not, but we are hopefully going to see if DC1 can still go to school!

TimeForLunch · 30/12/2020 18:31

@Eng123 completely agree with you. Gutted that our school is on the 'not opening' list as are a huge number of others.

That's not very helpful? The rate won't get any better with more mixing will it. I still think it should be two KW to qualify or what's the point? We could all argue that.

Everything else in Tier 4 is closed!

There is nothing left to close except schools. Everything else is essential (e.g., supermarkets)

I can see both sides of the argument on closing schools BUT if you ARE going to close schools in most of London, it makes no sense to keep a few isolated boroughs open.

Meredusoleil · 30/12/2020 18:41

Agree with pp about it should be schools in all London boroughs/Tier 4 areas.

TimeForLunch · 30/12/2020 18:41

@dreamingbohemian I would say schools are essential too. Certainly for some children.

Lairyfightzzzz · 30/12/2020 18:43

They are open for the children they are essential for.

Yes, because testing has been that reliable Hmm Plus, even if that was the dodgy logic they were using to justify their political point scoring, what about the last 2 or 3 weeks? Kids have been 'outside' (and lots of families not following the rules).

HeronLanyon · 30/12/2020 18:48

dreamingbohemian · 30/12/2020 18:49

Of course, and there should be provisions for those children.

It is not the same as supermarkets. You can't close all the supermarkets for two weeks.

HeronLanyon · 30/12/2020 18:50

Oops sorry
piper I agree. I too live in central London in area where they are going back. Surrounded by areas where they aren’t.

SimonJT · 30/12/2020 18:50

Is it me or does it seem like GW threw some darts at a map of the south east?

We’re in Hackney, which is somehow ‘open’

TheWristBoundLatexBitch · 30/12/2020 18:51

If this is helpful to anyone here is a table from today's cases, rate of increase or decrease etc. (Credit @avds on Twitter if anyone wants to look at all the tables, he updates daily)

This. Of course there are arguments for keeping schools open and at a personal level I am dreading the prospect of home schooling and keeping a full time job. But the lack of consistency is utterly insane.

I forgot to say, this is just the top 80.
Eng123 · 30/12/2020 18:53

Firstly this is not london only, far more of the uk is tier 4 than London! Secondly everything seems to be open in my tier 4 area! Fire works, corner shops, cafe for takeaway, just look at the roads, we haven't locked down in the least!

ConfusedcomMum · 30/12/2020 18:57

You forgot:

Make kids go to school in Redbridge where Wes Streeting is the Shadow Minister for Schools

dreamingbohemian · 30/12/2020 18:59

So there are only 10 London boroughs that are not closed, spread out across all of London (i.e., often surrounded by boroughs that are shut)

9 Labour, 1 Lib Dem

Two of which were threatened with legal action for trying to close early before Christmas (Greenwich and Islington)

Redbridge has the second highest case rate in London and is staying open FFS

This is either total incompetence or political point scoring (or both I guess)
