From this it seems the plan is to close schools in tier 4 areas but what about pupils and staff who live in other tiers and commute in?

Gavin Williamson in on bbc parliament at 3:30pm so it will be on the news soon after that

doubleshotespresso · 30/12/2020 15:18

Is two weeks anywhere close to being enough? Numbers in many areas of Tier 4 are truly out of control and climbing, the hospitals are on their knees...
This needs to be at least up until February half-term?

christinarossetti19 · 30/12/2020 15:19

Well, it's a move in the right direction in terms of suppressing transmission.

WanderingMilly · 30/12/2020 15:59

If so, this is to be welcomed but as pp has said, 2 weeks isn't enough...

BluemoonIsawyou · 30/12/2020 16:01

Agree is move in the right direction

Where’s Gav?

Flamingolingo · 30/12/2020 16:02

It’s what I’ve been anticipating and I think it’s needed, indeed it removes the anxiety I had about sending them to school (although work is going to be a complete nightmare, even though I have the option to WFH, it’s the homeschooling).

What I don’t understand/think is stupid, is that I’ve seen in the media that nurseries will stay open. Our local primary has not had cases but the nursery did. Also - we had a pretty hefty chicken pox outbreak at school last term, that came straight from the nursery up the road via a couple of siblings who overlap

ByersRd · 30/12/2020 16:03

BBC announcer did say 'new plans for schools returning' - so there are changes coming.

Itisasecret · 30/12/2020 16:04

There are places where T3 schools have T4 catchments. So that would be kicking the spread further.

We are staying in Tier 3 (South Yorkshire) but our numbers are climbing quickly. And yet they'll send primary schools back on Monday with zero hope of containing the virus (not the fault of the school!)

Nice plan....wankers

DinosaurDildo · 30/12/2020 16:06

Ffs Gav where are ya!!

Lulu1919 · 30/12/2020 16:06

I'm T4 from tonight
I'm a TA in a T3 school ...same county ..but different council area !!??!???
Crazy

Gingerbreadchoc · 30/12/2020 16:07

Will we be able to watch it live anywhere?

GoldGreen · 30/12/2020 16:07

@Flamingolingo I think the logic on keeping nurseries is 3 fold:

  • young children are at much greater risk if left unattended if parents wfh (there was a recent inquest where a child died in a hot tub while Mum was on a conference call), then school aged children
  • some parents will be unable to work and so increase in unemployed
  • really young children don’t seem to be transmitting compared to primary and then secondary
ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 16:07

Gav is late!

AnnaForbes · 30/12/2020 16:08

@Strawberrypancakes

I really hope that it’s just secondaries that close.
Why? I dont want secondaries to close. The GCSE cohort have missed enough already.
SatsumasOrClementines · 30/12/2020 16:10

Why @Strawberrypancakes ?

Yes, watch Sky News now. Matt Hancock just wrapping up his speech in HoC, then it will be Gavin Williamson.
Flamingolingo · 30/12/2020 16:11

@GoldGreen I’m sorry but I don’t think those reasons are justified - there isn’t that much difference between preschool and year R in terms of leaving children unsupervised and risk, parents of school age children are also at risk of not being able to work, and I think nursery transmission has been similar to KS1, mostly ok in most parts of the country, but as soon as one child becomes unwell the spread is fast and inevitable.

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 16:11

Can also see it on BBC News channel

Surely you shouldn't be going from a T4 area to a T3 school. That is madness. They should just close all the schools.
juliainthedeepwater · 30/12/2020 16:12

It drives me absolutely mad how the stories about school closures hardly EVER mention nurseries - despite it being extremely relevant to parents.. more so generally as pre-school children have the highest childcare demands!

As far as I know nurseries are statistically less affected than primaries and secondaries (and definitely anecdotally in my experience), so maybe the assumption is just that of course they’ll remain open.. but I’d really appreciate the clarity!!

cuppycakey · 30/12/2020 16:13

Deaths up to just under 1000, NHS is not coping.

Schools really have to close and not just for a week or two Sad

Bobbybobbins · 30/12/2020 16:13

All schools will be providing care for key worker children and vulnerable children.
