From this it seems the plan is to close schools in tier 4 areas but what about pupils and staff who live in other tiers and commute in?

Sigh I work in a school nursery class it looks like we are staying open - which I’m happy about because going to work keeps me sane.
However my year 7 ds will have to stay at home by himself for a week or two by the sounds of it. He will manage but he gets lonely by himself.

Chewbecca · 30/12/2020 16:57

I'm in a 'mass testing' for asymptomatic people area btw, but my local centre has not reopened this week as planned... due to lack of test kits.

I guess you are a School teacher and not in the private early years sector. We never even get a mention, despite working at far closer proximity to the children in our care than teachers Generally do. Whilst I don’t want it to be a race to the bottom, it is very rare for us to be given a mention or For anyone to concern themselves with our safety. It is also very rare for the early years workforce to moan about the conditions they work in, even though they are dealing with bodily fluids and get sneezed, licked and coughed on, on a regular basis.

peridito · 30/12/2020 16:58

Definitely said list of schools to close on dot gov ,

But for heavens sake it must be a known list ,surely not working on it as Gavin announces it in the Commons ? Closures must be based on certain factors . Why not say what they are ? Why not put list up immediarely ??

Childcare is such a shitty reason to keep primary schools and nurseries open.

Keep them open for key worker children and vulnerable children yes, but don’t throw teachers and school staff unwillingly into the front line as cannon fodder just for the reason of childcare.[/quote]
Providing ‘just’ childcare is exactly what nurseries do, so that parents are able to work and keep the economy going... There has been just one case at our nursery this year.

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 16:59

Unfortunately some classrooms have windows that don't open

manicinsomniac · 30/12/2020 16:59

Aargh, I want to see the list. Wonder how specific and local the decisions will be. My area is bad (not the worst but pretty bad) but my village is almost unaffected. I want to go back to school so much and think we easily could but suspect surrounding areas will keep us closed.

KilljoysDutch · 30/12/2020 16:59

@Bathroom12345

Most of those "doom mongers" are disabled and critically vulnerable people who are scared for their own lives or the lives of people they love. It really pisses me off when people say Covid isn't a big deal because its "only" killing disabled and elderly people like their lives don't matter. I mean most disabled people already know that's how they're viewed but this is really rubbing it in.

I’ve asked for the thread title to be changed
We've edited the title now, as requested.
CanICelebrate · 30/12/2020 17:00

@RaffertyBear the whole of year 10 in their school is taking them early

Beebityboo · 30/12/2020 17:01

I don't want to have to deregister them because they love their schools and it will break their hearts. What a mess Sad

manicinsomniac · 30/12/2020 17:01

It's a very stressful time. Everyone feels like they've been forgotten about and thrown under a bus because we've had so little contact with our normal range of people and started navel gazing too much. The reality is nobody has been forgotten. It's just shit for everyone and hard for us to realise that we're not the only people who are finding this. I wouldn't want to be in any of our positions right now.

Good point
Bathroom12345 · 30/12/2020 17:02

I have to disagree that most of the doom mongers are disabled. What an odd thing to say.

LegoAndLolDolls · 30/12/2020 17:02

Back in the day when life was normal I remember being at home upstairs on a conference call with toddler downstairs..the call went on longer than I thought and I was hosting it to customers.

My toddler wrecked the house. Bloody lucky he didnt hurt himself as he pulled the ironing board over too. I couldn't work.like that with a toddler for more than the odd emergency as my days like that was borderline neglect to keep my job.

I dont envy this situation. I also honestly struggle with thec2019 mantra that a days missed education should be fined with this shit show.

My middle two have EHCPs so they have to go back anyway.

This is where safeguarding becomes a bit of a joke.

I'm an early years teacher, I work in a nursery class within a large state primary school.
So yes, daily dealings with bodily fluids etc and 30 children literally in my face all day!
I feel your pain in the private sector, particularly as you are with even younger children than me.

Demitri · 30/12/2020 17:03

Have they yet said what the areas are that are closing primary’s too? I assume it’s somewhere in London and/or south east

Yes that's true Maryann1075

I think the focus for some months has been the rapidly increasing rates in secondary schools. We're now seeing that in primary schools and presumably EYFS will be affected.

The number of children in a setting make a difference to risk as well. My dc's nursery was quite 'big' and it had 60 kids divided across 3 rooms.

Their secondary schools - two separate schools - have 20 times that in each.

It must be very stressful for all staff working directly with children at the moment, and it's very depressing to see staff welfare at the bottom of the pile.

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 17:06

How can he say schools are safe?

tearsandtiaras · 30/12/2020 17:09

Boris just said the list is published

LumpySpacedPrincess · 30/12/2020 17:09

Where is the list?

LegoAndLolDolls · 30/12/2020 17:09

@Beebityboo

Unless your school has a waiting list or it's over subscribed you can deregister and then enroll them back when you feel more safe.

I couldn't do it here as it's a vastly oversubscribed area.

As someone has was threatened with fines for four years due to a child to anxious to go in 50% of the time, I was never fined.

If you dont want to deregister then you could gain a few weeks by saying you need to look into that option to avoid fines. But obs be careful you dont loose the place. I'm not a expert but know people who de reg

Bathroom12345 · 30/12/2020 17:10

I hope all parents who are screaming that schools should close will keep their children away from play dates, pointless supermarket shopping because the kids are bored and visits to relatives and friends to get them out of the house.

ineedaholidaynow · 30/12/2020 17:10

Haven't seen the list yet. I keep checking the DfE page
