From this it seems the plan is to close schools in tier 4 areas but what about pupils and staff who live in other tiers and commute in?

@nougatsquirrel

Do you have the website link for DoE page where you think it might be announced?
I just have the main DoE page: www.gov.uk/government/organisations/department-for-education

Assume it will on the front page.

@Strawberrypancakes

I should have said, I don’t want any to close, but primaries create a bit of a childcare / homeschool nightmare.
So you're willing to put me and my colleagues in the firing line for your own personal requirements?

I'm not exactly young but thankfully slim & healthy but I work with type 1 diabetics, severe asthmatics, obese people etc
We are all very worried, some of us understandably petrified, we've had 4 positive cases in staff over Christmas and some have been very poorly.
I work in an over crowded, poorly ventilated classroom with a class of 30 four year olds. Social distancing is totally impossible and ppe impractical, particularly as we have someone reliant on lip reading!

I feel like nobody gives two hoots about us.

Scaryprospects · 30/12/2020 16:42

I thought I heard gov.uk. I went on there and it sent me to council website who then it will be announced at 6pm

nougatsquirrel · 30/12/2020 16:42

Thank you

meditrina · 30/12/2020 16:42

@Lairyfightzzzz

They said they would announce areas where schools will shut later.
They're probably still compiling it in light of today's figures, but they really need to get a wriggle on now.

Piss poor statement - content muddled and repetitive, delivery lacklustre

But yes, vaccine priority is remaining with the vulnerable (age, CEV and CV) and occupational groups, possibly including teachers being considered for priority after that.

(With people having to be treated in ambulances/corridors in worst hit areas, I can see why they have to put clinical/age vulnerability first)

DParse · 30/12/2020 16:43

@Strawberrypancakes

I really hope that it’s just secondaries that close.
I hope it's just primaries.
Littlefluffyclouds13 · 30/12/2020 16:43

@RaffertyBear

Best line of attack is to keep schools open using mass testing which is now available. - Ed Sec.

You are allowed to travel from T4 to T3 for work.

The mass testing is at best 50% accurate. Even less when carried out by well meaning but unqualified volunteers or teaching staff!
Beebityboo · 30/12/2020 16:43

I'm actually going to have to seriously think about deregistering them Sad

annevonkleve · 30/12/2020 16:43

The plan for secondary sounds largely what a local sixth form college was proposing before Christmas anyway.

Next week remote learning - Y13s in to be tested along with staff

Then Y13s in if they tested negative. Y12s remote learning. Weekly testing after that. I don't know when they were proposing to have Y12s in but their remote learning provision has been very good.

So it just sounds like that plan will be pushed back a week.

I do think they should vaccinate uni/HE students on arrival on campus. I've said this before, but I think their need is much greater than the need of a healthy 40 something WFHer.

covetingthepreciousthings · 30/12/2020 16:44

And how accurate will it be when it's carried out by teenagers..?
@tableflowerss try telling the head that. I've already been told I'll be fined Sad
We have been threatened with fines multiple times over the past few months. When kids were off with a sickness bug, were contacted everyday too pressured to send them back else fine Hmm Twice a day they rang us, for a week. Ridiculous.

TicTacTwo · 30/12/2020 16:44

Our school has asked for volunteers to swab. The communication from school didn't mention self swabbing

I feel like nobody gives two hoots about us.

And I feel like the poor teachers is all anyone talks about. I guess perceptions are different depending which side of the fence you are on 🤷‍♀️

annevonkleve · 30/12/2020 16:46

And get the windows open. Tell parents to give their children coats and jumpers - none of this " we can't open the windows because parents complain that their kids are cold" nonsense. Just tell them to bog off. They're lucky if the schools are open at all.

I bought my son a base layer as part of his Christmas present!

Where did you read it would be Sunday evening?
That is not what was said. Gav just said it would be published later.

the80sweregreat · 30/12/2020 16:49

Hedging their bets. Not publishing anything till the new figures are in at the end of this week I bet and then they can tweak the openings up ( or not)
Just a hunch . It was clear as mud ..

I agree its not just teachers risking their lives - doctors, nurses, bus drivers, taxi drivers, pharmacists, shop staff have all worked throughout the pandemic, they don't get a to close down
CoffeeCreamandSugar · 30/12/2020 16:49

The Tory Party doesn’t care about normal people and any of those professions... they never have

Never mind teachers - nobody gives even one hoot about people who work in the Arts and hospitality, and whose lives have been completely destroyed by lockdown and tiers, never mind two.
Abraxan · 30/12/2020 16:53

In some ways I am surprised any school would have children sitting exams a year early at the moment. Now really isn't the time for encouraging early entry - I would have been actively discouraging dd to do so unless it was a subject she'd have been able to get top grades without too much input being needed.

Armi · 30/12/2020 16:53

You fucking do it then, @itsbeenalonghardyear

Deregister them and home educate. There arent many choices and that the only option that a individual can control. If you think its choice of them staying at home or death why wouldnt you deregister?

Bathroom12345 · 30/12/2020 16:55

Anne, I know having a window open makes a big difference but some people on this thread are just doom mongers. They seem to want us all to lockdown for xxx months. Do they not work? If you want to deregister your children then go ahead.

I am heartily sick of the doom merchants. Nothing is good enough, they must live their lives in a very high level of anxiety about almost everything they do.

We have agreed a deal with Brexit, we have the Oxford vaccine approved today but it’s the usual ‘yes, but, yes but’.

Chewbecca · 30/12/2020 16:56

Gav really needs a new speechwriter who can write a clear, concise speech.
