PM is due to make an announcement tomorrow what are youre predictions. I suspect larges area of the North moving from tier 3 to tier 4 and potentially tier 5 (closing schools) in London. Personally I think a full lockdown like March is required too many are mixing between the tiers and thats all those posting in social media.

People mixing amongst people of their own age and younger is fine it’s the low risk mixing with the high risk that needs to stop

It seems common sense to me

And it’s bubbles - the one thing that’s legal that allows it 🤷‍♀️

I go the pub and go the gym and see no one over 50

Yet people go to their parents, gps etc think kids and people like me are causing the spread- it’s not it’s people in their bubbles passing onto the vulnerable

BungleandGeorge · 29/12/2020 17:18

At the moment you still have to self isolate regardless of whether you’ve had the vaccine or infection. Children will not be vaccinated so will still be getting the infection and spreading it. I think keyworkers should be prioritised for their health but I’m not sure how it will either help schools stay open or reduce overall infection rates in the community without a major policy change.

MagicSummer · 29/12/2020 17:18

I think many more areas to move to Tier 4, if not the whole country, starting 00.01 on Thursday morning to prevent NYE gatherings.

Schools not to open until at least Feb half-term, universities the same.

Maybe the sweetener will be approval of the Oxford vaccine.

Being selfish, I am just glad I have a hair appointment tomorrow morning for my roots! May be some time before they will be open again, I fear!

Willyoujustbequiet · 29/12/2020 17:19

Schools closed. Its the only way.

But education should take priority and everything moved online properly. Live lessons. Let the teachers teach.

@BiggerTallerFaster

I do t think I've ever seen a family out for a jolly in Sainsbury's, covid or not.
Think two parents and two kids with a basket buying sweets and snacks. Totally unnecessary trip for all of them to make.
Mousehole10 · 29/12/2020 17:20

Schools need to close. There’s nothing else that can close in tier 4, our cases are still rising.

Pastanred · 29/12/2020 17:21

Transmission is not happening at supermarkets with fleeting contact

It’s traced to indoor mixing of over 15 mins so stopping mums and kids will do nothing

notimagain · 29/12/2020 17:21

No travelling abroad for work purposes unless you work in specific fields (I’m talking life or death)

Be interested to see a list of what you think these specific fields are..

You can get a clue of who actually needs to travel abroad to keep medical care and food etc flowing into and around the UK by looking at the list that was published for last spring's lockdown. Whilst Health Care Professionals and medical researchers were on there so are seemingly mundane occupations such as ships pilots, airline crews, train crews, nuclear power plant engineers/inspectors and certain categories of telecommunications engineers and umpteen other occupations.

BiggerTallerFaster · 29/12/2020 17:23

I don't think it's common to see both parents in a supermarket with DC and I can't think why I'd notice what they're buying

DH is 66 and in band 5 for vaccination, I'm 45 and don't get a mention. Perhaps I should suggest he moves into the shed!

Havanananana · 29/12/2020 17:24

This thread is like ground hog day, with the usual suspects baying for lockdown and schools to close.

The current infection numbers are far worse than Groundhog Day, and nobody is baying for lockdown.

An informed debate would be welcome, so in that spirit here are some questions for those who don't think that a lockdown is the answer:

  • what action do you propose instead?
  • what level of infections are acceptable before lockdown becomes necessary (infections on 8th Dec were 12,000 - today's figure is 53,000)?
  • if the scientists are unanimous about the need for a lockdown, why do you believe that their advice should be ignored?

@Pastanred

I’d like to see bubbles tightened

Transmission occurs across generations in the home in the main and this needs to be stopped

My kids go to school but don’t see gps - kids and adults mixing with parents and grandparents needs to stop before people lose their jobs

I’d like to see the use of gp for childcare banned with alternate provision

Kids can mix all they like if contact is reduced to elderly and vulnerable

Protection/ppe for teachers - supervised learning and amalgamated classes (many schools have lower numbers with sickness etc
Far too many people having bubbles - no excuses for most of them

I won’t be able to work if my mum doesn’t help with childcare and I’m not the only healthcare professional in this situation. Nursery doesn’t cover night shifts. My OH is in the military and he equally can’t just not work due to his role. Nursery again won’t cover his hours- he is away weeks at a time. My mum is also a healthcare professional and has been vaccinated, a blanket ban on grandparents doing childcare assuming the are all old and vulnerable is ridiculous.

@annevonkleve

I want schools to close right now They ARE closed right now!
Ok, I will rephrase this... I want schools to be told they will remain closed. Not a day before they are due to go back but now so preparations can be made!
ThelmaNotLouise · 29/12/2020 17:25

Not according to data collected by PHE from test and trace.

news.sky.com/story/covid-19-supermarkets-most-common-exposure-setting-for-catching-coronavirus-in-england-latest-data-shows-12136418

Oh, and it's not mums and kids, it's BOTH parents and kids.

Monkeytapper · 29/12/2020 17:26

If we do change tiers or announce lockdown, does anybody know what day or time it will start?

mabelandivy · 29/12/2020 17:27

I think he will keep primary schools open and only open secondary for years 11 and 13. Ridiculous when you look at the data. I don't think he will do a full lockdown due to the economy. All of this semi lockdown here and there in certain areas isn't really having any impact. I think the only way we're going to get through this is for the vaccines to be rolled out quickly etc. We're currently in Tier 4 - our local shopping centre has released a statement to say that places such as Goldsmiths the jewellers will be open for click and collect only - how is that even essential??!!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/12/2020 17:28

It's not essential but if it stops more shops from going under then surely click and collect is a good thing.

Rubyrubyrubyred · 29/12/2020 17:28

I think the entire country will be tier 4+. Secondaries delayed. Primaries open but the rules will be home or school for kids. It will be lockdown except for going to work or education.

DecemberSun · 29/12/2020 17:29

If johnson says schools to stay open I hope the unions grow some balls and twll him to fuck right off.

Schools need to close until the money is found to make them as safe as any other work place. Ventilation, social distancing, all wearing masks and no more then 15 to a class to ensure distancing.

Ori2021 · 29/12/2020 17:29

Secondaries to have a delayed return by about two weeks. Primaries/nurseries as normal.

Gingerninja4 · 29/12/2020 17:30

Schools closing in higher numbers only my issue with that is in my son's school .They come from county and out of county are so if they close schools in London pupils that come from London will still stand school in herts etc

MrsMiaWallis · 29/12/2020 17:31

I think it will 'just' be tier 4 for most tier 3 areas and tier 3 for tier 2. Don't think they'll close schools

SophieB100 · 29/12/2020 17:32

My Sainsbury's delivery driver told me that our local store was crammed to the rafters on Sunday, with loads of families, from grandparents, parents, children all shopping together. Often two trollies per family and the staff said that they were buying far more than normal - like a normal 'let's prep for New Year' shop.
This was also the same last week and Christmas Eve. Usually type of Christmas shopping - loads of people, lots of shopping.
Party food, etc.

Am in Tier 4.
This is the reality.
Regardless of what the guidelines are, I know that many families ignored them and met up for large gatherings over Christmas, and probably will over the New Year.

The huge uptick in hospital admissions reflects about two weeks ago - when it was rampaging through schools. The effect of the Xmas period behaviour will hit in a couple of weeks.

It's a nightmare unfolding before our eyes.

wanderings · 29/12/2020 17:32

I'm sure that once the vaccine is very much underway, the government are going to pretend that it's having the right effect, whether it does or not; I think they see it as the only way out of this hole they've dug themselves into. If they have been exaggerating the doom and gloom lately (which I strongly suspect they have, to keep people frightened and obedient over Christmas, and ready to accept school closures etc.) I'm sure that when they feel the time is right, they're going to issue secret orders to hospital bosses to say "er, now it's time to... er... play down the threat, we need the public spending again, the magic money tree is running out of leaves; keep any covid deaths hushed up from now on."

Pastanred · 29/12/2020 17:32

That supermarket link doesn’t prove anything! It even says so

At end of day if you ask 100 people where they’ve been in the last week the most popular answer would be the supermarket as literally everyone - people with kids and workers has to shop!

If they’d have asked 100 21 year olds the answer could have been the pub I’m sure 🤷‍♀️
