PM is due to make an announcement tomorrow what are youre predictions. I suspect larges area of the North moving from tier 3 to tier 4 and potentially tier 5 (closing schools) in London. Personally I think a full lockdown like March is required too many are mixing between the tiers and thats all those posting in social media.

It's just my opinion but schools being open doesn't help matters as people will not take it seriously

I agree. Too many “well if they can keep schools open, I should be able to be in a crowded place, licking anyone I want”

Closing schools is what keeps a whole load of people at home.

ThelmaNotLouise · 29/12/2020 17:03

Guardian is reporting Govt is considering closing secondaries until 18 January. The kids will have been off for four weeks then, so presumably they think that'll be enough of a circuit breaker, plus they're going to get teachers vaccinated as priority.

www.theguardian.com/education/2020/dec/29/full-reopening-of-secondary-schools-in-england-could-be-delayed

Although judging by the amount of kids meandering around our Tier 4 supermarket this morning, they should be in school because their parents can't be bothered to stick to the rules when they're not in class. Not lone parents I hasten to add, who have no choice but to take their kids shopping with them, but mums and dads together with their kids together, like they're on an outing. Hmm Tier 4 is essential trips only, not a family jolly to Sainsbury's.

Dugee · 29/12/2020 17:03

As others have said, most places moving into higher tiers, especially given the new high cases today. Not sure about schools, should probably be closed to stop the spread (as the NHS is about to be overwhelmed in some areas) but closing primaries and nurseries causes chaos for working parents. I'm really on the fence on this.

annevonkleve · 29/12/2020 17:07

The only way this is going to stop is if there is a police presence. Which obviously won't happen.

annevonkleve · 29/12/2020 17:08

I want schools to close right now They ARE closed right now!

Bit drastic! Supermarkets need to send a clear message it's one person per shop and turn away families when one adult can stay outside with the children. The superstore I was in was rammed and there was no one on the door like there has been for months.
Amira19 · 29/12/2020 17:09

The problem is the tier system doesn't work people are doing what they hell they like. All over social media people are travelling from tier 3 to York for drinking, shopping pantomimes, another person went to the Yorkshire wildlife. Thats without the boxing day sales and seeing the Trafford Centre been completely full for atleast the last 3 days. NYE celebrations is only going to make things worse. I think the full country is going to need to be in lockdown for a reset so the rates of infections have a chance to drop and the vaccine can be put into place.

@wanderings

I’d love to see non-essential shops close. Listen to yourself. You'd "love" to see non-essential shops close. These are people's jobs, businesses, livelihoods you're talking about, which people have worked hard to build up, have invested large amounts of money to become covid-safe, and you would love to see them being destroyed even more. It's really sad that people are loving this complete and utter destruction.
Horrible isn't it? Just because it doesn't impact them it's ok.

My only question is, if they lock down again and the relax and the numbers go up, what then, keep locking down?

I suppose the answer will be "no, the vaccine will sort us out, it's the silver bullet!!".

Havanananana · 29/12/2020 17:10

53,000 new cases today. Infections now running at over four times the rate of just 20 days ago and still increasing and the post-Christmas/post-New Year spikes still to hit in early January.

The government has no choice but to put the country into lockdown.

FedUpOfAllThis · 29/12/2020 17:10

Honestly I’ve given up trying to second guess the shit show that is our government.

annevonkleve · 29/12/2020 17:10

But shop staff shouldn't have to do that. People will only comply if it's someone in authority. So police.

Sainsburys has been sending a clear message and gets nothing but abuse for its efforts.

Brunt0n · 29/12/2020 17:10

A shit sandwich of harsher restrictions but also the approval of the Oxford Astra Zeneca vaccine

Pastanred · 29/12/2020 17:11

I’d like to see bubbles tightened

Transmission occurs across generations in the home in the main and this needs to be stopped

My kids go to school but don’t see gps - kids and adults mixing with parents and grandparents needs to stop before people lose their jobs

I’d like to see the use of gp for childcare banned with alternate provision

Kids can mix all they like if contact is reduced to elderly and vulnerable

Protection/ppe for teachers - supervised learning and amalgamated classes (many schools have lower numbers with sickness etc
Far too many people having bubbles - no excuses for most of them

SabrinaTheMiddleAgedBitch · 29/12/2020 17:11

Surely they will close both primary and secondary now?! Its not something I necessarily want to happen but they have no choice right?

annevonkleve · 29/12/2020 17:13

Ideally it needs to be tougher than March and borders also need to be closed

It doesn't need to be tougher than March. Restricting outside exercise will make NO difference.

And as for borders being closed, everyone has to quarantine when they come in. Which is more than they had to in March (although to be fair the whole world was in lockdown then, so there wasn't a lot of point).

Bluntness100 · 29/12/2020 17:13

This thread is like ground hog day, with the usual suspects baying for lockdown and schools to close. Sigh,

annevonkleve · 29/12/2020 17:14

Some grandparents are younger than some parents!

ThelmaNotLouise · 29/12/2020 17:14

annevonkleve You're right, it shouldn't be down to supermarket staff to enforce – they should employ security guards. Anyhow, it goes back to my point that parents are not being careful by dragging their kids round the supermarket with them – many of the kids I saw this morning were mask-less. These will be the same parents who'll no doubt complain if schools have to shut for the whole of January because cases are out of control.

PurpleDaisies · 29/12/2020 17:14

@SabrinaTheMiddleAgedBitch

There seems to be more evidence that secondary schools are a problem than primaries. They might try keeping primaries open.
MrsGrindah · 29/12/2020 17:14

Well it’s a free for all in my local Sainsbury’s. They are not even trying to encourage people although I agree it’s not their role to police it.

Also you just have to read this thread to see the diverse range of opinions on whether schools should stay closed or not. There is no way SAGE and the gov can take any steps without outraging some sections of society

Fizbosshoes · 29/12/2020 17:14

Well we have been doing lessons at home and in class simultaneously all term to children who are self isolating. I don't have to be at home to deliver online lessons, I just do my lesson at school with a microphone and the children isolating listen in or access the lesson later when more convenient

My year 6 child had to isolate at the end of november along with 100 others from their school even though it obviously doesnt spread in schools Hmm and they had live lessons for English, maths, grammar and science.
I was really impressed but think it would have been a nightmare for teachers.
If only key worker children were due in possibly one teacher for the year could do real life teaching and one could do remote instead of doing both simultaneously.. .?

GameSetMatch · 29/12/2020 17:15

I really want the schools to stay open but it’s got to the point they need to close even if it’s just an extra week of holidays. It’s not fair on teaching staff or families that may bring the virus home.

YogaLite · 29/12/2020 17:15

I am sure Boris will start with good news (Oxford vaccine), then he will thank NHS and will also profusely thank everyone who have been complying Hmm.

And then he will say that we should be ok by May if we stick to new tightened tiers.

I reckon schools won't close.

annevonkleve · 29/12/2020 17:17

Hmm if infections are still on the rise, that suggests to me that schools are not the hotbeds of infection some think they are. My ds hasn't been in college since 11th December. Others haven't since 18th December, which is 10 days ago now. If the rate plummets tomorrow and in the coming days, schools were the culprit. We'll see. I am not convinced.

BiggerTallerFaster · 29/12/2020 17:17

I do t think I've ever seen a family out for a jolly in Sainsbury's, covid or not.
