PM is due to make an announcement tomorrow what are youre predictions. I suspect larges area of the North moving from tier 3 to tier 4 and potentially tier 5 (closing schools) in London. Personally I think a full lockdown like March is required too many are mixing between the tiers and thats all those posting in social media.

Tier 1! PARTYYYY!!!!!!

shinynewapple2020 · 29/12/2020 21:17

I think they need to delay schools opening for 2-3 weeks. I understand all the reasons for schools being open but I don't think they are going to get on top of the huge rise in cases with this new variant virus . Obviously they need to remain open for key worker/ vulnerable.

Tier 1! PARTYYYY!!!!!!
Oh yes please!
formerEUcitizen · 29/12/2020 21:39

Normally they leak this stuff to the press first to soften the blow, gauge opinion etc.
When can we expect this?

Yetithesnowwoman · 29/12/2020 21:40

@formerEUcitizen - I’m looking out for tomorrow’s papers (esp the Torygraph), that’s most likely I think. They publish the front pages tonight at some point.

Lovemusic33 · 29/12/2020 21:41

They are saying that the military are being called in to help with testing in schools so I suspect the announcement tomorrow won’t be that schools are closing (not in lower tier areas anyway).

shinynewapple2020 · 29/12/2020 21:44

@Spiratedaway

If we go into tier 5 and can't leave the house I won't comply I need to walk for my mental health !!!! Even if around the block

I think that the idea of people not being able to leave the house is something invented on Mumsnet .

AnoDeLosMuertos · 29/12/2020 21:44

@Lovemusic33 and it’s been reported that the military will be “assisting” by video link. Teachers on the front line but actual military personnel aren’t. Irony.

Look at the details. It’s 1500 troops for 3500 secondary schools and they’re in a call centre.

I get that it’s maddening, but we can’t just “fuck lockdowns” and it’ll last as long as it lasts.

I usually spend 1/4 of my year abroad, living in the sunshine. Not this year. I more than anyone is missing my freedom.

But, I don’t worry about kids catching the virus and I am not all about saving 90 year olds (not that I’d choose death for them either, but they have enjoyed long lives, so I’m glad they’ve got that) but if we to fuck lockdowns the NHS as you know, would become so overwhelmed that we possibly wouldn’t have:

Access to emergency treatment
Routine treatments
Cancer treatments

Imagine if you had a terrible car accident and there were no ambulances available. Long waits at the hospital. No beds. No oxygen. No specialists.

A lockdown is not about Covid is it? It’s about keeping the NHS functioning to deal with us all, no matter what care we might need.[/quote]
@DBML Yes, that's quite true. However, I've needed treatment for a particular problem since March, and haven't been able to see anyone at all, because I haven't got Covid. On the one occasion I went to A&E because it was so bad, I was the only person there (huge city A&E, Friday night). People aren't being treated for other things whether we're locked down or not.

I'm also awaiting an operation for another problem (not life-threatening, but very unpleasant and prevents me from doing various 'normal' things). The normal waiting time is 16 weeks. It's now 3 years.

WhipMaWhopMa · 29/12/2020 21:56

I think I do know the pantomime you mean, @Amira19. However, it isn't one of the big ones, and I doubt anyone caught Covid from it - it's operating at a tiny capacity and with plastic screens between bubbles who are in any case seated miles away from one another.

There have been some Teesside tossers, but York is basically quiet and compliant.

DrDolittlesParrot · 29/12/2020 21:59

I don't think it matters what he says, people aren't following it anymore. The only thing that would help would be a fully enforced total lockdown. Schools, everything closed. But he won't do that. What he's been doing up to now hasn't worked, but he wants schools open and people working.

MrsFezziwig · 29/12/2020 21:59

I don’t see anyone salivating or drooling over the prospect of lockdowns. I do see people who are frightened when cases spiral out of control and think tougher measures should be taken.

I also see the “usual suspects” - they get off on sneering at frightened people because they’re oh so superior. They’re the same people who’ve gone very quiet on the schools threads after insisting for weeks that schools were fine and absolutely not a major cause of virus transmission, while harassing and goading other posters. Well that went well didn’t it?

OrangeBananaFish · 29/12/2020 21:59

Tomorrowspapers.co.uk have the front pages of the papers from about now, but they add more papers as they get them I think so I often wait until at least 20 past 10. I suspect most of what will be said will be on there.

Amira19 · 29/12/2020 22:07

WhipMaWhopMa it not necessarily getting corona from the pantomime but them bringing it to a tier 2 area especially if they go there then food and some shopping if several people do this , then this is why cases are beginning to raise. I love York I went to University there and regularly meet up with uni friends unfortunately I havent seem them in over a year but I dont move in different tiers. Which is part of the problem.

Ok thanks, currently schools and hospital capacity, nothing leaked from Covid-O meeting, I am particularly interested in tier changes, if any.
Bathroom12345 · 29/12/2020 22:15

Just had a peep at Tomorrowspapers.co.uk. Nothing about approval of Oxford vaccine

getwhatyougive · 29/12/2020 22:17

There was a travelling pantomime performing at some of the local halls. Excellently spaced seating, no more than about 30 people there, temp checks on arrival and it was a brilliant evening out. I doubt anyone from any other Tiers would have bothered as there was extremely limited tickets available and it was entirely watched by people from our village when we were there.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 29/12/2020 22:17

From the site with tomorrows papers.

  1. Cases are exploding, hospitals are overwhelmed.
  1. Secondary schools return should be delayed
  1. NOTHING about primary schools (even though SAGE have said they should close)

Some paper with a headline about Pole dancing?!!

@WhipMaWhopMa @Amira19. I very much doubt people bothered to come from T3.
pinkdinosaursarereal · 29/12/2020 22:22

The NHS gets overwhelmed every bloody year. This whole thing is ridiculous. I can't live my life incase I need a hospital bed. If they close schools my reception aged child doesn't even get to learn the basics at incase he catches a virus and gives it to someone who might need a hospital bed. Ahhhh I really hope they don't close schools.

Pastanred · 29/12/2020 22:24

It’s not same everywhere! My local hospitals are at 1/5 capacity they had last month and I’m tier 3 already

None of the nearest schools in my area had a single case in December

Zara50 · 29/12/2020 22:29

Itv news only reporting on whether secondary schools should close too. I think its pretty clear primary will not change regardless of tier.

CuteBear · 29/12/2020 22:37

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss

I’d like a full lockdown like April so schools and other education closed and as many working from home as possible. Limited trips to shops and one adult only unless a valid reason. Too many using shops for a social outing,
Lockdowns don’t do anything. Children and young people are suffering mentally and academically due to school/college/university closures. People have lost jobs and businesses. People are contemplating or have committed suicide. People can’t get medical treatment because the NHS only cares about c19 (but strangely doesn’t test patients before and after leaving hospital where they catch c19).

Most people who have died with c19 also had a serious condition such as Alzheimer’s, Dementia and heart disease and were very old. It’s sad, but people die every day. We need to maintain good hygiene and get on with our lives. We can’t carry on like this.
