PM is due to make an announcement tomorrow what are youre predictions. I suspect larges area of the North moving from tier 3 to tier 4 and potentially tier 5 (closing schools) in London. Personally I think a full lockdown like March is required too many are mixing between the tiers and thats all those posting in social media.

In answer to a couple of PPs, the reason the Nightingale Hospitals aren't being used is that there aren't enough medics to staff them. A lot of healthcare workers are off with Covid. I don't understand why this isn't being more widely reported.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/12/2020 18:27

The Exeter Nightingale is being used but I think it was the smallest Nightingale anyway

notevenat20 · 29/12/2020 18:28

The tests are 48% accurate and they also plan to use them to test close contacts of school cases instead of isolating them. It’s very dangerous

This depends on which test they will be using. Some of the lateral flow tests have higher accuracy. Also two tests helps a lot. It looks like a really positive move to me.

Where is the Oxford vaccine?

Belladonna12 · 29/12/2020 18:29

@etopp

Well, that's something. But the (other) vaccine was being touted as the great saviour of mankind about three weeks ago - since when it has barely merited a mention. Who are all the people who are being vaccinated, and why aren't we now hearing about them? If they are being vaccinated in their thousands, why are we still talking about lockdowns?

Sorry - not meaning to rant at you personally, @Belladonna12 I am just feeling completely despairing!

I don't know what you are reading but it gets mentioned a lot! About 600,000 people have been vaccinated so far but that is obviously nowhere near enough and so we still need lockdowns for at least another couple of months. The problem is that we have a limited number of doses of the Pfizer vaccine. We will have more of the AstraZeneca one when that gets licensed as it is made in the UK and can be stored in fridge temperature.

A few more areas into tier 4 and exhortation to stay at home.
We will only get the true plan which is full national lockdown and schools closed once the brexit deal has been approved by Parliament and the Oxvax is approved. Then it will be fast moving situation, alas, schools closed but a new dawn coming, mega vax plans.

That's not universally true. My doctor friend in London hasn't been called up to help as they say they are not short staffed.

PM will be taking his family to Verbier for a much-needed holiday and won't be back till Switzerland is out of lockdown, or Brexit is over, whichever comes first.

A friend went to a pantomime in York the other day not sure why you think I'd be lying Hmm. Its been widely reported teesiders have been visiting York and fines were being issued.

I dont think people are frothing at the announcements, I'm fed up, I just want to go to work and life my life like I did before however we are in a pandemic. I want to know what the announcements are as it affects my work and the financial implications for the business. I was depressed during the first lockdown and my mental health took a nosedive but I dont think these tier systems are working.

If they don't close the schools they may as well not bother with anything. Schools are where, certainly locally, we saw the biggest spikes recently, with 3 out of four secondary schools in my town having to close because of outbreaks.

Keeping schools open would be utter madness, and one hell of a fuck you to teaching staff.

Only keyworker children should be given a place in a school, the rest should be WFH. I get it's hard for parents WFH, but it's a necessary evil.

ASchuylerSister · 29/12/2020 18:35

@FedUpOfAllThis

Honestly I’ve given up trying to second guess the shit show that is our government.
That’s exactly how I feel now.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they closed all schools and put us in a Tier 12 lockdown.

Also wouldn’t be surprised if they declared the pandemic over and said it was business as usual for everyone.

PrincessNutNuts · 29/12/2020 18:36

@ineedaholidaynow

So for those who don't want lockdowns etc what do you suggest happens with hospitals etc which are already struggling?
I always wonder this.

It's usually bad enough when this "slow on the uptake, always playing catch up, reactive not proactive" government take action anyway.

How much worse than 1000 British people dying unnecessarily a day do they want?!

Isn't this already the worst year for U.K. deaths since 1918?

PrincessNutNuts · 29/12/2020 18:38

It depends which faction is wagging the Tory dog that day

ineedaholidaynow · 29/12/2020 18:38

Maybe they want hospitals to stop treating people with COVID (as it is merely a cold) and treat other people instead, and just let people with COVID die at home, instead of having treatment.

QueenoftheAir · 29/12/2020 18:39

Transmission is not happening at supermarkets with fleeting contact

It’s traced to indoor mixing of over 15 mins

That's exactly it - the virus is transmitted via proximity x time + talking - so a perfect description of schools and private homes. .

Lovemusic33 · 29/12/2020 18:42

I agree OP, I don’t see the tiers are working but I’m unsure what the answer is. I have just had my hours cut in half at work, I want to find another job but at the moment it’s impossible, impossible because the the lack of jobs and impossible because we may soon have kids at home. I’m not sure how to survive mentally and financially for the next 3+ months.

Ellmau · 29/12/2020 18:42

This is why the upmarket restaurant just down the road from me here in Tier Two has decided to close anyway. We're only six miles from T4. Boss said he'd tried asking people their addresses when they booked, they'd happily say they were local, and then from overheard conversations it would be perfectly clear they were actually from over the border.

They could have insisted on proof of address on arrival.

Ellmau · 29/12/2020 18:43

My guess: complete crackdown for NYE, no one to leave home 8pm to 8am apart from emergency services.

Elephant4 · 29/12/2020 18:46

It's getting to the point that they can't take much more away from us - isn't it?

Tier 4 here.

Amira19 · 29/12/2020 18:48

If they leave pubs and restaurants open for nye people will flock to them from tier 3. I think he needs to put things in place before it escalates further.

In Tier 4. Everything is closed. We're in London. There are no shops open - except food shops and pharmacies and many of those are shut out of choice.

In the centre of London everything is shut too. The whole place is a ghost town.

Yes there are schools that they can shut. But people are walking everywhere - meeting up outside. No Tier anything is going to stop that now.

It's not March. We're no longer afraid. We will not be locked up - whatever the government dictates tomorrow.

Why does Covid come out after 8pm ?

Surely they'd allow takeaway deliveries after 8pm. NYE is going to be miserable anyway without banning takeaways!
StealthPolarBear · 29/12/2020 18:55

Curfews work. By reducing the amount of time people mingle the overall risk is reduced. Same principle as the 16-8 diet o suppose.
