National lockdown needed

Record breaking 40,000 new cases today why on earth is boris not calling for a national lockdown now? Why is he so slow at acting on a fast moving virus?

@Tootsey11

By 'March' lockdown, I mean Boris coming on saying we are in Lockdown.

Over here our local politicians announce lockdown, which are usually given out on the local news. Most people don't take a blind bit of notice. People seem to take notice, ie March, when it's done as a 'Boris' announcement.

So the only difference being the person who announces it?
BillMasen · 28/12/2020 22:20

All those people saying “it has a low death rate so what’s the problem”, I’m sorry but

FFS ITS ABOUT CASES OVERWHELMING THE HOSPITALS, not the death rates. Jesus, it’s not hard to understand

Dee1975 · 28/12/2020 22:20

He is being slow. Again. I wonder if it will be announced this week. I can’t see how they can’t put us into lockdown with the number of beds taken being higher than the peak.
Last thing I want is a lockdown. But I fear things will be a lot worse without it.

TroubadorinTrouble · 28/12/2020 22:22

If people are ignoring the tier system, what factors mean they won’t ignore a full lockdown?

Noellodee · 28/12/2020 22:25

People who say the March lockdown never worked baffle me. I imagine them sitting on a leaking life raft, refusing to bail out water, because they did it last time and the boat still filled up again, so what’s the point?

And you can't judge it by the daily death rate of recent days anyway. Weekends and Mondays are low anyway and there's a lag, factor in the bank holidays and even more so. I dread to see what it'll be over the next few weeks. Admittedly the vaccines may be making a difference already, thankfully, as some of the most vulnerable have had a vaccine dose.

Added to the fact that 40,000 new cases is today will take weeks before some of those became part of the death or hospitalisation figures.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 28/12/2020 22:29

Boris doesn't like to come across as the bad guy who takes away our freedoms.What he doesn't realise is he's coming across as more of a bad guy for not implementing a lockdown now and stopping more needless deaths.More ppl would have respect for him if he acknowledged this situation now and took control .

Yes probably, and done on a national basis, not local. Just like the tiers, lots don't seem to be adhering to the rules, when it was done in March on the whole of the UK, people seemed to listen.

starray · 28/12/2020 22:30

@Ilovegreentomatoes

And apparently schools still to open as planned....I really give up.
I know...it's madness isn't it
Againstmachine · 28/12/2020 22:31

Don't know why they are dithering. Full lockdown is needed or this will never end.

Because there are are other considerations besides the science, there is economy to consider and other issues that stem from lockdowns. It really isn't as that simple.

yawnsvillex · 28/12/2020 22:31

@EffOrf

Yep, lockdown with closed schools and all children under 18 kept indoors, fed up of kids everywhere, not SD and in shops

Well aren't you a delight.

He needs to swallow his pride and announce a full lockdown, demonstrating the seriousness of the situation by closing educational settings and non essential retail until the vaccination programme is making a difference. It needs to be reinforced by the clear instruction to stay at home that was there in March.
jillypill · 28/12/2020 22:34

Why don't you just stay indoors & do the world a favour?

starray · 28/12/2020 22:35

@Lazypuppy

Cases aren't a bad thing, its the deaths that need to be watched. Does it really matter how many people catch COVID? considering majority recover
Many recover only because they get treatment in hospital.
jillypill · 28/12/2020 22:36

You have to allow for human nature. In March people were scared & it was a novel experience for many. A lot of people are jaded now.

FrazzledChip · 28/12/2020 22:37

Think about your average secondary school child. They are mixing closely ie in confined, indoor spaces with 50/60 different adults and children everyday. That's quite possibly a conservative estimate. Even if they are allowed to roam the parks and have sleepovers etc, their daily exposure would be just a fraction of a school day. Closing schools will slow the spread but the government seems to hate teachers so they'll leave the bombshell for the night before term starts.

Burnthurst187 · 28/12/2020 22:38

So, why would he act straightaway when he's been horrendously slow to act at every point since March?

And some ppl think we'll be "back to normal" by May Hmm

Elephant4 · 28/12/2020 22:40

I think they want the Brexit deal to have it's full moment in the news and in people's thoughts before they drown out the one good thing (in Boris's mind, anyway) that's happened this year with more depressing stuff.

Eng123 · 28/12/2020 22:40

Could it be less to do with schools and more to do with irresponsible christmas mixing?

Eng123 · 28/12/2020 22:41

Irresponsible pre christmas meeting!!

rookiemere · 28/12/2020 22:42

People are weary of this, but now there is an end in sight.

Government needs to prioritise rolling pit Oxford vaccine as quickly as possible - slightly worrying that I don't think it was approved today when it was meant to be.

Never thought I'd hear myself saying this, but a lockdown until Feb half term with schools closed probably makes sense providing the government keeps up their end of the bargain and vaccinates the million a week they claim they can, and however they want to do it - which may involve reprioritising so that teachers and TAs get the vaccine - schools reopen at that point come what may.

jillypill · 28/12/2020 22:44

I'd be interested to know as the Tier 4 restrictions didn't stop the usual rush out of London in my area.

DfEisashambles · 28/12/2020 22:44

@Elephant4 wouldn’t put that past Boris at all.

@Eng123 the data is being analysed or so they say but new evidence suggest children are pushing the infections so it’ll take a few weeks to confirm - however any Xmas mixing won’t have helped.

Spiratedaway · 28/12/2020 22:54

@hamstersarse

There is no doubt that there is a spread and rise but I am extremely concerned about the collateral damage that lockdowns inflict, mainly on the poorest in the country.

I think a better strategy would be to keep the tiers but accelerate the vaccination programme exponentially

This ! I know of so many peoples losing business and mental health decline is rife
Thewiseoneincognito · 28/12/2020 22:58

Tiers meanfuck all to some. My Best friend works in Selfridges in Manchester, they had lots of Londoners driving up to buy Christmas presents from the designer boutiques in the store like Tiffany Prada and chanel because of Tier 4 closures. Utter madness, they couldn’t refuse to sell to them either.

We need a proper full lockdown NOW
