National lockdown needed

Record breaking 40,000 new cases today why on earth is boris not calling for a national lockdown now? Why is he so slow at acting on a fast moving virus?

We have 160,000 approx people living in our area .
Since March we have had 148 covid " related " deaths

Musicaldilemma · 28/12/2020 20:00

@flowerycurtain- so what do you expect kids/young people to do for months with no online learning/nowhere to go/nothing to focus on. I always assumed exams were kept in place to give kids something to work for/motivate them.

Musicaldilemma · 28/12/2020 20:05

@Rosehip10- I fear you are wrong. I have been observing them for months - they have been so bored and are very frustrated. It was apparent autumn half term and now at Christmas too.
I have seen some of these kids grow up from early primary. They are not the looting types but this is the chat amongst them.

@DfEisashambles

It really troubles me when in the face of this, people comment on why it can’t happen because of xyz of their own personal circumstance. As if they’re the only ones to be inconvenienced or as if it were someone’s fault.

It’s a mutating life threatening virus.

Well said.
studychick81 · 28/12/2020 20:09

No. The % of people who actually die is extremely small. Another lockdown would cause too many problems. I get that we need to protect hospitals from getting overrun but not by a lockdown. It's too late now. I don't believe the death rate anyway, they are recording deaths as COVID for people who died within 30 days of a positive test, even though it might even have been nothing to do with it.

thebearschairs · 28/12/2020 20:09

@MrsBlue4

I'm sorry but the majority of replies on this are hysterical! Why not just lock us all up forever? Why don't people look at alternative information/opinions rather than fear mongering mainstream media outlets which have infested our lives for months now.

THIS!

studychick81 · 28/12/2020 20:11

Get those most at risk and those who want to/can do to isolate . It now doesn't make sense for everyone to isolate for a few who wouldn't get it if they were isolating anyway.

Jojo19834 · 28/12/2020 20:12

Unless we lockdown like March, with schools and virtually all shops/cafes shut, we won’t get anywhere. The last lockdown was a joke and I’m not interested in doing this again unless it is like March. Sadly I’ve been on maternity leave since July and it’s been hideous with nothing to do and nowhere to go. I’m not going to continue hiding indoors with a baby when the reason for the spread is not being dealt with

Fortherosesjoni70 · 28/12/2020 20:14

If they let covid run rampant, who is to say we dont get another mutation that is way way worse and doesnt work with the vaccine.

Littleyell · 28/12/2020 20:18

I don’t think we should go into a full lockdown. But I do think if we are going to have tiers everybody needs to be in the same tier for instance 4. Because otherwise those who are in tier 3 are travelling to tier 2 for a day out.

studychick81 · 28/12/2020 20:21

I don't think a lockdown would prevent that anyway. March lockdown made the numbers go down but it didn't get them to 0 and there went crazy once we came out. The same with the November lockdown. If it's going to mutate it will even with the lower number of cases.

I personally don't think we can't keep going into lockdown and then coming out the numbers go straight back up and repeat. Lockdown is only a short term solution, it doesn't work. We could be in that situation forever.

Littleposh · 28/12/2020 20:21

Must be great not to give a shit about anyone outside of your house. People need jobs. People need money. The country needs money. Grow up. Educate yourselves properly

Coffeeislife04 · 28/12/2020 20:26

If we had the national lock down in November with everything shut like March we wouldn't be in this mess now. The government only act when its to lateHmm

MistletoeandGin · 28/12/2020 20:28

@EffOrf

Yep, lockdown with closed schools and all children under 18 kept indoors, fed up of kids everywhere, not SD and in shops
Oh fuck off. Why on earth should my young children be locked up? Do you have any kids under 18? We’ve been isolating awaiting test results and my 2 year old has been crying at the door trying to get out. All we do is go for a walk/scoot around the block. Don’t go near anyone. My 7 and 5 year old go to school (as mandated) and go for outdoor walks. They are not the problem.
MadameBlobby · 28/12/2020 20:28

*No to the lockdowns! They do not work against a virus,Bloody ludicrous.

Genuinely, though, what does then?*

Nothing :( we need to get the vaccine out ASAP, and lockdown to hopefully facilitate that. But it seems that whatever restriction is in place now won’t stop the spread.

Kazzyhoward · 28/12/2020 20:29

Covid is rampant in hospitals and care homes. It's being taken in by workers etc. So, even in those "safe" environments, the vulnerable aren't being properly protected. To protect them, the people they come into contact with, i.e. delivery people, health/care staff, etc need to be low risk from having covid (i.e. the general public). That means that infections in the wider community need to be kept low.
cjcghana · 28/12/2020 20:33

What a load of crap I read. Yes I'm white, yes I'm British, yes I'm middle class.... LUCKILY I live in a third world country (oh shock horror) ...Whatever.. but have the majority of you read your comments?

If you put aside your "needs" ... Shopping, restaurants, socialising, and all that crap.. then maybe you'd see that a lockdown works. You haven't got a fucking clue.. you don't know a lockdown... Too fucking precious.

And guess what?? Our total cases are considerably less than uk's total deaths. We get scared in our daily cases pass 100. Add to that we closed ALL our borders from the time we had our first two cases.. and the land and sea borders remain CLOSED over 9 months later

Yes we live the new normal, yes we could have a normal family Christmas. Our schools have been closed for ten months but our government will adjust the school years accordingly..

We are not in a privileged world where lockdown means you can get your shopping delivered. People do live HAND TO MOUTH here. But you non believers carry on with yourselves and let your cases rise...

Have you all forgotten the NHS and key workers who've not had time to even step back from it. Forgotten your clapping have you? Too busy eating chocolate?

Like I said I'm a brit from the posh bit of Cheshire. Do I know anyone who has stuck to the shitty tier system? Nope.

Rant over. Ready to be lashed and hope those sensible posters will send me wine or flowers

Horehound · 28/12/2020 20:34

I doubt there is a difference to what was going on i march and April to now.
The only difference is more testing is happening. More testing =more cases.
There isn't an increase in deaths is there?

PicsInRed · 28/12/2020 20:34

Yes. But we need to also close the borders this time and do it properly.

No. More. Ski-trips. for fuck's sake

laudemio · 28/12/2020 20:35

Well sounds like school closures are coming following Sage warning - new headline article in the Times.

cjcghana · 28/12/2020 20:36

And as our president said .. he knows how to rebuild an economy but he doesn't know how to bring back the dead....

AND WE DONT HAVE UNIVERSAL CREDIT. WE GET SWERT F.A.

Staffy1 · 28/12/2020 20:39

@Littleposh

And others are dying. Why do you think anyone who is worried about their health and dying is selfish, but those who worry about their jobs and money aren't? Both have a right to be worried and both are thinking of themselves and others.
Mumto3thatsme · 28/12/2020 20:48

@Sittinginmyoodie

When cases were through the roof in the North West and Midlands in September (when the new variant was actually discovered) everyone scoffed at the idea of a national lockdown. Perhaps if it had happened then we wouldn't be where we are now?

Now the South East is seeing large numbers again, there are calls for the whole country to go into lockdown.

FWIT, I'm in Wales and the schools will be closed until at least 18th Jan.

Where have you seen schools are closed until 18th jan?
Beepbeepa · 28/12/2020 20:51

1% dying is 600000. Over half a million people.
Are we all ok with that? When deferring our pleasures for a few more months might mean a 6th of that if we can get the vaccines rolled out.
And that doesn't include all the deaths of pts with non covid conditions where treatment can't be provided due to caring for the covid pts. And the terrible terrible misery of long covid.
There is no god given or legal human right to living in a time of peace prosperity and good health. If we want that then we have to do our bit. That also means properly supporting those who will find lockdown financially or psychologically challenging.

SirVixofVixHall · 28/12/2020 20:54

Full lockdown, properly policed ( we are supposed to be in lockdown here in Wales, but we have had tourists and second homers arrive locally) . Schools need to close. This is a swiftly escalating and terrifying situation for everyone.
