@SoscaredforJan

Do we think all primary schools will end up shutting eventually? We have just gone into Tier 3 and I’m anxious about schools going back.
I do wonder what will happen when the neighbouring counties have as bad, or worse, stats. That's the problem with tiers: they don't really work without restricted movement or some massive geographical boundary blocking the way.
ElvisOperator · 30/12/2020 23:13

@RhubarbFizz another FT article says there is an Israeli election soon and this:
In November, the day after Pfizer announced the results of the efficacy trials for its vaccine, Mr Netanyahu called up Albert Bourla, the chief executive of the vaccine maker, and struck up a conversation on their shared Jewishness.

The speed with which Mr Netanyahu has obtained millions of doses of the vaccine contrasts with what Israelis have widely viewed as a dysfunctional response to the coronavirus pandemic. He has fought and overruled health officials who wanted targeted lockdowns, preferring instead nationwide measures.

ElvisOperator · 30/12/2020 23:20

It is interesting the vaccine choices and how quickly countries will get back to normal, I wonder if the percent vaccinated will be the new comparison statistic of choice Confused

caringcarer · 30/12/2020 23:39

We have had some really bad news over last couple of days with 50,000 new cases today and 53,000 new cases yesterday and deaths shooting up is so worrying, over 900 today. We just have to take a deep breath and be glad the Oxford vaccine is now approved and vaccines to start on Jan 4th. We also got Brexit deal over the line. Let us all hope 2021 will be better than 2020 and there will be vaccines available for whole of world. We are lucky Boris backed the Oxford vaccine from day 1 and we will get enough vaccine to vaccinate all in UK who want one. I had a little cry of relief when it got approved. Light at end of tunnel and darkest just before dawn.

We're entering Tier 3 too and considering keeping DC off for at least a week or two to see how it pans out from the Christmas mixing. I honestly can't see them staying open.

DecemberStar · 30/12/2020 23:46

Me neither.

Witchend · 30/12/2020 23:49

I honestly can't see them staying open.

Unfortunately it seems to be the hill they are choosing to die on. I can see them just reducing down how many contacts need to isolate and announcing how schools can stay open with reduced staff etc.
Why they are choosing this one when there are so many U-turns (and I'm not against U-turns when evidence changes, just frustrating when you can see it coming weeks before they can) I'm not sure, but it does seem to be one they're sticking their head in the sands and shouting "schools are safe, so there," if any evidence is brought to the contrary.

I've lost faith in them doing anything sensible round schools. Sorry.

MarshaBradyo · 30/12/2020 23:52

Can we not do the all schools will end up closing stuff here? Loads of other threads, thanks

I do think if anyone is very anxious they should just keep dc off (SI etc)

1990s · 30/12/2020 23:52

Thanks @everythingthelighttouches and @Firefliess for the explanation in on Oxford vaccine and efficacy.

Words · 31/12/2020 08:05

.

Firefliess · 31/12/2020 08:13

@ThSun I think the MHRA's motives are pretty clear - to get the maximum protection to the maximum number of people as soon as possible. That may mean that some who've had their first dose are not quite as protected as they could be with two doses, but someone else gets their first dose sooner. The ideal dosing schedule for one individual is not the same as the best thing for society overall.

Firefliess · 31/12/2020 08:58

This press release explains the rationale for the dosing regime. Also clarifies the approach to women who are breastfeeding or pregnant www.gov.uk/government/news/statement-from-the-uk-chief-medical-officers-on-the-prioritisation-of-first-doses-of-covid-19-vaccines

Aixenprovence · 31/12/2020 09:01

What has Pfizer said about the decision to postpone the second dose - I thought I had read that they had commented on it somewhere?

They say there's no evidence for immunity after 21 days. www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-britain-vaccine-ap/analysis-no-half-measures-and-mind-the-gap-uk-nod-for-astrazeneca-vaccine-raises-more-questions-idUSKBN2941WR?feedType=mktg&feedName=healthNews&WT.mc_id=Partner-Google

Aixenprovence

“What has Pfizer said about the decision to postpone the second dose - I thought I had read that they had commented on it somewhere?“

They are not happy at all. I can understand why as the first dose alone may not provide the efficacy of two doses and this will all be linked to their product.

teta · 31/12/2020 09:50

No proof the vaccine works when taking it 12 weeks apart has been quoted by Pfizer. No data to show a single vaccine confers a long term advantage. No data to show protection lasts for over 21 days.

Having parents in their 80's who have had one dose so far it all seems to be very much a gamble.

In contrast the makers of the Oxford Vaccine are happy for theirs to be given 12 weeks apart. Based on a small subset of the trial. How big was this subset?

Great people are now going to be jumping on the Zionist rubbish again.

What joy Hmm

I’ve missed this. Do you mean Pfizer will follow same timescale as Oxford Az?
Eyewhisker · 31/12/2020 09:58

The Oxford trial had many rather random gaps between doses, whereas Pfizer was always 21 days, even in Phase 1.

It does seem implausible though that Pfizer would mysteriously stop working after 3 weeks, so extending the gap a bit seems a reasonable pragmatic thing to do in an emergency.

You would have thought they would just stick with to Pfizer jab two doses 21 days and oxford 12 weeks then.

Makes it more complicated in some ways and less vaccinations at speed. However you got to follow manufacturers instructions surely.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 31/12/2020 10:08

I wonder if Pfizer also like the idea of under mining the UK vaccination program a bit too because of the oxford vaccine.

I still find their upping the efficiency percentage of their jab two days after announcing it dodgy. The second American jab announcement they were 5% more efficient than Pfizer. Then suddenly it is oh sorry we made a mistake and ours is this efficient too. A very competitive company me thinks.

littlestpogo · 31/12/2020 10:12

@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum - that was exactly my thought too.

littlestpogo · 31/12/2020 10:13

@MarshaBradyo - This letter explains the new timetable and it also applies to Pfizer
