Is it hell or is it ok??

Today was due to be the day for 'the big Christmas shop'

I'm going to look like a proper panic buying twat with my loaded Christmas trolley aren't I 🤦🏻‍♀️

Went to Aldi at 1.30 and there was hardly anyone in there- as empty as it usually is on an early Monday morning!

Shelves well stocked, had everything I needed, including all the fancy Xmas stuff, a pleasant surprise!

Rinoachicken · 22/12/2020 16:20

Went to large Sainsbury’s last night. Tier 4. Could only get half on my list. No meat at all, unless you wanted a turkey that serves 20! No chicken, nothing. Also very little fresh veg, no potato’s at all which was bizarre. Lots of empty shelves, and staff were filling gaps with random things they had lots of which made it even harder to find anything!

Was also very busy, lots of people shopping in pairs or more. No one on the door monitoring numbers. Very very frustrating.

So got to go out to Tesco tonight to see if I can get the rest of my list there. Failing that it’s M&S tomorrow, which I can’t really afford but needs must.

frustrationcentral · 22/12/2020 17:20

@Rinoachicken - M&S have their Christmas dinner veg on offer for 40p a bag - carrots, parsnips, sprouts and potatoes

I went to M&S this morning , it's a town centre one so I was hoping it wouldn't be too bad as you wouldn't go there for a big shop - no immediate parking. It was busy, but plenty of stock. We've got a big Tesco delivery coming tomorrow night. Currently only a couple of bits showing as out of stock

TomasinaTiers · 22/12/2020 17:20

@Rinoachicken my best bet has always been smaller local shops (coop etc), I completely avoided the large supermarkets during lockdown

My local coop and/or Nisa seem to not get so overrun

happilybemused · 22/12/2020 17:25

Nisa are brilliant. Ours has been a lifeline since March 👍

sijjy · 22/12/2020 17:29

I got to Tesco last night at about 9:15 was pretty quiet. They had started to restock too at about 9:30 x

thismeansnothing · 22/12/2020 17:30

I work nights in a supermarket. So glad I was in and could get my stuff as soon as I finished at 8 when the doors opened. But my god I've never seen a mad rush like it. They swarmed in 😂 then when I left at 8:20 the queue to get in snaked round the retail park. It was insane. Really was each person for themselves in there 😳😳

crowisland · 22/12/2020 17:47

please try to support small, local shops instead of the large chain stores! If you live in an area with Turkish or Greek or Cypriot grocers, they often have the best quality produce. Some will even deliver.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/12/2020 17:49

My city centre was the quietest I've ever seen it on a Saturday. John Lewis was deserted.

Mummyyyyyyyyyy · 22/12/2020 17:52

Went to Asda this afternoon. I avoid the supermarket normally & use click & collect. However we had run out of several spirits this year so off I went. I was pleasantly surprised. Busy but like a normal Saturday. Shelves full. I wonder if lots of people go first thing & it actually quietens down later in the day.

stairway · 22/12/2020 17:54

Lidl at 7.30 am was ok this morning. Won’t be shopping for another week now and think I’ll shop early from now on.

pomers · 22/12/2020 17:55

Went to Sainsbury’s at lunch time. Parked fine, busy but not horrendous. Plenty of food, no bare shelves

PeachyPeachTrees · 22/12/2020 17:57

South East Tier 4.
Yesterday I went to my big Sainsburys at 7am, it opens at 6am. It was heaving. Queue to get in, queue to get to the meat aisle! Too busy for social distancing. I didn't get everything on my list, so have to go back. Apparently it had calmed down by 11am, everyone was there early all trying to beat the crowds!

whostoletheeyeoutyourteddybear · 22/12/2020 17:58

Went to Tesco at 1pm before work. All was quiet, no queues

Kentonian12 · 22/12/2020 18:04

Supermarkets are supposed to be limiting one person per household. Not happening absolutely packed in my part of England. No wonder the infection rate sky rocketed. Absolute joke.

Londontown12 · 22/12/2020 18:14

Went early this morning Morrison’s fully stocked helpful staff not to busy and staff amazingly helpful ! I guess it all depends where u live

anon666 · 22/12/2020 18:15

Down here (London suburbs) it's always completely bonkers in these days running up to Christmas. Local Facebook groups seem to be reporting business as usual so hopefully the panic buying is just a tabloid scare story.

Teddybear27 · 22/12/2020 18:17

Went to Waitrose (South East) this morning at about 10am. Really busy particularly at the chiller and veg section and NO carrots!
Mind you got everything now, apart from carrots so I think we will be ok..😆

Owl55 · 22/12/2020 18:19

Please don’t let the media encourage you to panic but , I have been to 3 different supermarkets in the past few day and every shop had plenty of food , fresh or otherwise ! The shop open again on Boxing Day anyway . I don’t want to see another shop!

FrankieAlicemum · 22/12/2020 18:20

Went at 5am, Tesco open 24 hours. Typically we had run everything down which was a mistake hindsight so it was 2 trips in and out but we are done and don’t have to go back for weeks! Hurrah. Was bedlam when I came out at 8:40am. Good luck all!!

FrankieAlicemum · 22/12/2020 18:21

Quite right. We’ve done our veg and meat local and supermarket for booze and other stuff! Don’t panic all!
dogsarethebestpeople · 22/12/2020 18:23

Yep all good. In Morrison's by 8am, got everything I needed, everyone being friendly and wearing masks. Nowhere near as bad as I feared.

FrankieAlicemum · 22/12/2020 18:23

Absolutely. Butchers and fruit and veg all done locally. Not because of scaremongering. It’s just easier as it’s all dropped off! The pain is the other stuff you can’t get. TGI done now
MincePieandBaileys · 22/12/2020 18:29

We were at a local standard size Tesco supermarket just after 8am this morning. A little busier than usual, and getting busier as we left.
Couldn't buy a small Christmas cake or foil container to cook the turkey, as they were sold out, but bought locally later.

Mesoavocado · 22/12/2020 18:36

Busy at Tesco yesterday in car park at 1000 but store was fine so I suspect free parking was the issue.

Waitrose today quiet at 1100

Absolutely nothing in short supply

People need to calm dooooooon
