Is it hell or is it ok??

Today was due to be the day for 'the big Christmas shop'

I'm going to look like a proper panic buying twat with my loaded Christmas trolley aren't I 🤦🏻‍♀️

I think the media should be banned on reporting on panic buying, it's just fuels the fear. I was in a state this morning, but have just been to Sainsbury's and it's absolutely fine

justanotherneighinparadise · 21/12/2020 13:42

@Autumnnightsaredrawingin

Re Daily Mail, I saw a meme once that said something along the lines of, ‘there are people who will tell children Father Christmas isn’t real, but still believe what they read in the Daily Mail.’ Grin

It was funnier online, I can’t recall the exact wording. In our family, we have instigated a rule whereby if anyone says something and it comes from the DM you have to prefix it with ‘according to the daily Mail’, so that we can all ignore it. Smile

🤣

My neighbour said big tesco was chaos this morning, near Manchester.

My cousin works in waitrose and said it was chaos there too.

Dinosaur19 · 21/12/2020 13:42

Sainsbury’s in Kent absolutely fine. Busy but PLENTY of everything. People were being sensible to my surprise.

JumpingJamboree · 21/12/2020 13:42

I have been to my local Sainsbury's and Tesco's today on the hunt for printer ink and both have been busy but manageable.

refusetobeasheep · 21/12/2020 13:45

I went to M&S but queue outside was so long I left it and headed to Waitrose instead. Little queue there which moved quickly. I had to get everything for Xmas lunch as plans fallen through. DID get everything but 1. you've largely got to take what is there rather than setting your mind on a particular item 2. Hang around - the turkeys were flying off the shelves but they were re-stocking so if you lurk you can swoop when something good is re-stocked. I am now done (and back at work where should have been all morning rather than doing an unexpected shop!!)

Why does it always seem to be Waitrose with the queues? I have six supermarkets within a 5 min drive from my house - plus an M and S with a fairly sizable food section. The only one that ever has a queue is Waitrose. I just don't understand why people don't drive on to another supermarket - plenty of choice.
My local one is quite a big one and they restrict the numbers instore to about 100 which is why I like it. They are also very high on mask compliance

I went into Tesco once over the summer and it felt horribly crowded and far fewer people wearing masks.

I'd rather queue outside for a bit and feel safe inside

Madcats · 21/12/2020 13:48

I bought some fruit and veg from the local market stall, then walked through town to get a couple of bits from Waitrose (11ish). It was a bit of a shock to the system as there were lots of family groups and blokes with trolleys full blocking whole sections! Having so many people "attending, but not shopping" meant that people were having to queue to get in when I left.

I would say that it was about 1/2 as busy as a normal Christmas week, but we are tier 2 and I think many people organised meat/dairy/veg from the suppliers that kept them fed in April and May.

Pechanga · 21/12/2020 13:49

I've just been to my local Morrison's.

Busy with Christmas shoppers - but not a hint of panic buying.

Shelves were full and being stacked constantly, plenty of extra staff in, thank goodness there doesn't seem to be any panic or craziness here!

SimonJT · 21/12/2020 13:51

I went to Sainsburys in Tier 4, so people having to buy unplanned xmas food, it was fine and no one appeared to be buying silly amounts of anything.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 21/12/2020 13:59

Went to Sainsburys at 11.30. Was about as busy as a normal Saturday or Sunday, quite busy but not chaotic.
Don't usually go on a Monday, but expected it to be quieter.

Paleodiet · 21/12/2020 13:59

Lidl, not crowded, a few full trollies, no panic buying apparent, shelves well stocked.

ohtheholidays · 21/12/2020 14:00

Were in Tier 4 and I went to Iceland at gone 10 this morning and it was fine,no queues and there was only a couple of bits I couldn't get,my DH went to asda and it was busy but no queues to get in.

TwinklyLaughNot · 21/12/2020 14:00

This is my local one in Suffolk.

Anyone been to the supermarket this morning?
TwinklyLaughNot · 21/12/2020 14:01

Tesco that is!

pinkpetal2 · 21/12/2020 14:05

I left out at 6.45am arrived at the supermarket for 7am was starting to get busy, by 9.15am it was rammed. This was Sainsbury's

Crazycatlady83 · 21/12/2020 14:05

Went to Tesco today, no queue to get in (about 11.30am) but was busy (normal Christmas shopping busy), shelves full. Long queue when I left (about 12.15pm) Tier 4 south east

bluerad · 21/12/2020 14:10

Tier two here and Lidl was quiet about an hour ago.

PegLegTrev · 21/12/2020 14:11

I wouldn’t say I looked like I was panic buying getting my Christmas shop. Unless you eat copious amounts of tinned tomatoes and spaghetti which gives you the shits each Christmas it’s pretty what you’re doing.

fussychica · 21/12/2020 14:15

Just back from Waitrose in South West. Small but fairly fast moving queue. No busier than normal inside as it's the same maximum capacity as usual once there's a queue thereby limiting numbers. Thankfully they haven't relaxed that so distancing is still possible. Pretty well stocked and able to get everything I wanted, which was mainly fresh stuff. No evidence of panic buying. Won't go again until next week.
DS in Tier 4 outer London now not coming to us for XmasXmas Sad so had to shop for food. Went yesterday. Said it was busy but fine.

Because they are very strict about the number of people allowed in the store at once. Much more so than M&S, in my experience. Which is why I shop there a lot.
AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 21/12/2020 14:19

I went to Aldi at 830 this morning - needed our usual shop for the rest of this week as well as Christmas food. Was worried how it would be so did go earlier in the day than I’d planned.
It was absolutely fine - fair few people in for a Monday but normal for Christmas week. No panic buying in sight, everyone just doing their Christmas food shop. It was quite pleasant after what I’d expected!

Shelves were full and being restocked. I’m not actually sure where they planned to put the stuff!

My sister phoned me from Sainsbury’s in another town a few minutes ago and she said it’s busy but just Christmas busy

RedToothBrush · 21/12/2020 14:27

Cheese was flying off shelves as fast as they could unpack it

Do not traumatise me.

Livefortherain · 21/12/2020 14:27

I did click and collect at Asda.. managed to get everything and NO SUBS except bacon! It was around 11.

So I went in store for bacon and it was mental. But everything did looked well stocked and they were stocking shelves constantly.

SquirtleSquad · 21/12/2020 14:43

I went to Sainsburys at 2ish and it was unbearable. I should have realised when there was a police car and ambulance outside.. apparently someone got punched in the face over a pot of premade taste the difference gravy Biscuit
I managed to get everything I was after except for Maris pipers Xmas Grin
