Feel really bad for Cornwall

They've done so well to keep their numbers down and have done whatever has been asked of them, yet the Christmas plans are now being restricted.

I've got family down there and they've said everyone there is livid and are afraid of Londoners turning up and spreading the mutated strain around the county.

OP posts:
Haffiana · 19/12/2020 22:43

So many of these Russian bot posts on MN tonight. Just fuck off.

IndecentFeminist · 19/12/2020 22:44

Have you been to Portsmouth OP? It may technically be almost an island, but isn't in real terms. You wouldn't really know it without looking at it on a map

PhilCornwall1 · 19/12/2020 22:46

@BackwardsGoing

No just the media, there were loads of mumsnet thread telling people to stay away from their Cornwall.m and tourist weren’t welcome.

As is often the case, these people/threads were not representative of the population as a whole. But journalists were very quick to amplify even the mildest of negative attitudes.

Journalists, that would have been Cornwall Live then. Bunch of shit stirrers.
FPS123 · 19/12/2020 22:47

Feel sorry for them? I envy them. They can still mix households indoors can’t they? We haven’t been able to do that since May.

I just think, crack on. It is what it is.

FestiveDigestives · 19/12/2020 22:50

So bored of hearing about Cornwall. It’s sparsely populated and miles from anywhere. The people there aren’t any more rule abiding than Londoners or Liverpudlians or Mancunians.

Umbridge34 · 19/12/2020 22:51

Honestly this idea that some areas are following the rules more than others is ridiculous. I've seen so many posts accusing this area or that area of not following rules.
Rule following, or not as the case may be, is more than likely pretty similar wherever you go. However the population densities, demographics, health inequalities etc are not. Cornwall haven't been following the rules any better than anywhere else. Theyre just more spread out and isolated.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 19/12/2020 22:55

@BackwardsGoing

Well your post is made up. This isn't the united states. Our car registration plates dont have a state/county on them so you cant tell where they're from.

Totally agree!!
Dickorydockwhatthe · 19/12/2020 23:02

To be honest I can't believe they are still classed as tier 1. I live just across the bridge and we are in tier 2. I'm pretty sure those living in Cornwall close to the bridge will be using our NHS service rather then the one in Truro! Alot on the other side of the bridge also work in Tier 2. It doesn't make sense and I can't say I feel sorry for them. Tonight's news absolutely sucks and my heart goes out to all those in tier 4.

I agree so smug, as if they are following the rules more than other parts of the country.
Audreyseyebrows · 19/12/2020 23:04

@PhilCornwall1 I hate Cornwall live with a passion!

Op, don’t feel sad for us! We are just incredibly lucky (and I’m not sure if the luck will last). I feel sorry for the rest of the country.

We aren’t special and we haven’t done anything differently to the rest of the U.K.

Freddiefox · 19/12/2020 23:05

Lots of us have family already living in tier 4. Lots are old or vulnerable and scared. Spare a thought for them.

LimitIsUp · 19/12/2020 23:05

They've had a jolly lovely time of it with minimal restrictions. No, I don't feel sorry for them

southeastdweller · 19/12/2020 23:07

@Freshcoatofpaint

They've not "done well", that suggests their low rates are due to people's behaviour, whereas it's population density and geography. Crap for them, but it's crap for everyone.
Exactly. They've done no better than people in London or Greater Manchester.
Aerial2020 · 19/12/2020 23:07

I wouldn't say anyone is having 'a jolly time'of it right now. What a shit thing to say.

Can this please not turn into a Cornwall bashing thread.

Stealing this from Ozark for you OP: you and your family don’t know sh* about fu*. what a goody post on a shitty day.

Everyone? Rubbish! It's hardly the talk of the county!!

As with the summer when the media said the Cornish were terrified of people coming down, the vast majority couldn't give a toss and just went about their day. Hell, some of us even passed the time of day with those bug ridden holiday makers!!

justgeton · 19/12/2020 23:12

Hurrah for Cornwall.

Let's leave them alone in the summer too

Err...yes they do, they have regional first 2 letters.

www.newreg.co.uk/dvla-number-plate-identifiers/

Of course when new yes the regional plate will apply, secondhand could be further away. My secondhand car is from 40 miles away.

mellongoose · 19/12/2020 23:15

Exactly @PhilCornwall1.

Although the pubs I have been to recently are being pretty militant about making sure you are from a tier 1 area before taking your booking for dinner.

As has always been the case, the Cornish will police themselves!

We are looking at tier 2 in January I'd say.

PhilCornwall1 · 19/12/2020 23:18

We are looking at tier 2 in January I'd say.

I'd agree with that, was expecting it before Christmas to be honest.

Enough4me · 19/12/2020 23:19

Cornwall has a lower NHS capacity and it's a shame it wasn't placed in tier 2 for this reason. It now appears safer, but the capacity to cope hasn't increased. I'm in Devon and despite only being in tier two will not be seeing family at Christmas.

With friends and colleagues in the NHS I hear how significant the risks are. It seems that the general public, who clapped previously for the NHS, ignore them now for the sake of a meal on one day.

Numbers are increasing rapidly in the region though and we have very few critical care beds.

I live in Cornwall and I don't think people are 'livid' at all. Sad maybe but not livid. I think people are expecting to go into tier 2 soon (if we haven't been forgotten about)

I do think we are concerned about second home owners though.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 19/12/2020 23:24

@Ariela
They really dont mean anything. Cars are transferred around dealerships all over the country all the time. My brand new car is from Luton. I'm in Scotland. My last brand new car came from Birmingham.

justgeton · 19/12/2020 23:29

What's the problem
With second home owners?
