Feel really bad for Cornwall

They've done so well to keep their numbers down and have done whatever has been asked of them, yet the Christmas plans are now being restricted.

I've got family down there and they've said everyone there is livid and are afraid of Londoners turning up and spreading the mutated strain around the county.

@Debradoyourecall

I live in Cornwall and feel bloody lucky. I haven’t heard anyone here moaning about our situation.
I'm struggling to see what changes down here over Christmas to be honest. That's probably because I'm missing some very important change to the rules/law/guidance.

Blissful ignorance is the way to go in all of this.

barnanabas · 20/12/2020 09:27

In a crappy situation, I think Cornwall is pretty far down the list of places which need sympathy to be honest. And the idea that we have 'done well' is misguided. We're Tier 1 due to the relative lack of population density and our geography as far as I can see.
I imagine people here are like others elsewhere - some have been following the rules to the letter, some have been totally disregarding them, some (like us) have been mostly following them but also employing our own judgement on occasion.
Expecting to go into Tier 2 at the next review, or possibly the one after, assuming there isn't a national lockdown after Christmas which seems likely.
I haven't seen any evidence anyone here is 'livid' about the changes to the Christmas set up, or being horribly unwelcoming to people assumed to be visiting. (Like a previous poster, I live in a seaside town and have a Northern accent, despite living here for 15 years; I've never experienced any hostility.) We're honestly just like everyone else and the 'othering' of Cornwall that you get on here (by people from inside and outside Cornwall) really does seem strange to me.

forwardsbackwardsrebound · 20/12/2020 11:26

Cornwall will be locked down soon, it's cases are rising fast. Honestly, I hate this shit of places "behaving better". It's bullshit.

When I read the original post, all I could hear was "Young" Mr Grace from Are You Being Served.

"You've all done very well!!". Hmm

PortiasPlumUpduffedPudding · 20/12/2020 13:22

No you're wrong OP, I'm in Cornwall and have just lost most of my Christmas holiday let bookings so am likely to go bust as I've spent most of the morning issuing refunds, two sides to every story you know

Summer2021please · 20/12/2020 14:04

I live in Cornwall, there is quite a few people around which is worrying. It was manic in the summer but didn’t cause a huge issue as covid was low around the U.K! But I worry if too many people come here over Christmas then it will increase rapidly. Time will tell. We really do deserve a quiet Winter after the manic summer before the next season! It was insane. I’ve lived in Cornwall my whole life and never seen a summer so busy. Great for businesses though, I just found it stressful.

I just think some people think of Cornwall as one bit holiday destination forgetting that some of us have our whole lives here.

You sound very sensible op.

PhilCornwall1 · 20/12/2020 14:09

I found the opposite where I am, it was a lot quieter than a normal summer.

forwardsbackwardsrebound · 20/12/2020 14:15

Well, according to the Guardian, the cases have doubled in the last week. 109 LW, 251 TW.

Where I was am (won’t say where) but right on the coast. It was manic!

I’m really sorry to hear that, it must be awful.
UnshakenNeedsStirring · 20/12/2020 14:33

They voted leave so, no I dont feel bad for them

Gooseygoosey12345 · 20/12/2020 14:42

No I don't. They can still meet family! I've said it on various threads but I'll say it again. We have 0 cases locally, but because we come under a (huge!) county where there are areas of high numbers, we've had to go into tier 4. We live rurally, there's nothing here for people to flock to (not even a shop in the village!), if we lived a mile up the road we'd have been in tier 2. I feel bad for all the elderly couples who won't see their grandchildren, and I feel bad for my kids who've isolated for 2 weeks so they could see their grandparents, and now they can't.

Aerial2020 · 20/12/2020 14:42

Not all of us voted leave!

Aerial2020 · 20/12/2020 14:43

Some of these posts are goading and shitty for the sake of it.

PortiasPlumUpduffedPudding · 20/12/2020 14:57

I didn't vote leave so please do not include me in the jibes.!
Why all the shit stirring anyway
Just about fucked off with all of it today!
We're not a homogeneous County to have a go at we're individuals same as everyone else and taking a stereotypical swipe at half a million people is crazy.

JanewaysBun · 20/12/2020 15:00

I'd like to point out that my 5 family members who have lived in Cornwall their whole life have very RP accents and not Cornish in the slightest

cjpark · 20/12/2020 15:01

We're in a pretty coastal town in Cornwall. Last night we had a few cars turn up (small narrow streets!) and spill into the 4 second homes in the street. Its concerning. These people can now go to the local pub, shop and basically integrate into our small community. Cases doubled in our region last week - no wonder!

PattyPan · 20/12/2020 15:02

Feel more sorry for west Berkshire and Windsor and Maidenhead which are now in tier 4 even though cases are well below the England average!

Strugglingtodomybest · 20/12/2020 15:16

I find it bizarre when people say things like "they've said everyone there is livid". How on earth could they possibly know what "everyone there" feels? I mean, it's just stupid really isn't it?

I'm not livid and I don't know anyone who is. I have an issue with second homes generally, but I have no issue with them coming down now tbh as they'll probably stay in and order their food online anyway so it makes very little difference imo.

If anyone even cares, I feel lucky if anything. As others had said, we benefit from a low population density and better weather for meeting outdoors.

pinbinpin · 20/12/2020 15:20

I don't think you should judge where people come from based on car registration plates. Many leased cars come from all over the country (where has stock etc) and many people buy cars from different areas to get a better price, quicker stock etc. My car for exampl ahs Midlands plates on it and I haven't been there for years.
