Feel really bad for Cornwall

They've done so well to keep their numbers down and have done whatever has been asked of them, yet the Christmas plans are now being restricted.

I've got family down there and they've said everyone there is livid and are afraid of Londoners turning up and spreading the mutated strain around the county.

@BackwardsGoing

My town in Cornwall was pretty busy today. Judging by the car registrations and accents there are a lot of tourists in the shops, cafes etc.
I’m sure they will be made as welcome as they were over the summer... sharpen those pitch forks
LadyCatStark · 19/12/2020 22:11

Nope, they have the most freedom out of all of us so I don’t feel sorry for them. They can see 5 other people at a time any day of the week and can go to pubs, restaurants and shops with other people. We haven’t been able to do any of that for months and months.

BackwardsGoing · 19/12/2020 22:15

@IndecentFeminist

And you can't tell a thing from car registration plates

Trust me, we can spot the tourists pretty easily. They're driving nicer cars, wearing more expensive clothes and have tidier children Wink

Friends who work in retail and hospitality locally all confirm an influx of visitors.

ancientgran · 19/12/2020 22:15

I'm in South Devon, our rates are as low as Cornwall but we are in tier 2. I think Cornwall have been lucky, we have been lucky as well. I feel sorry for areas that have high figures, places that have been in virtual lockdown for months.

PhilCornwall1 · 19/12/2020 22:18

How do you know we've done what's been asked of us? We've been no more (and probably) less virtuous than you think.

IndecentFeminist · 19/12/2020 22:19

I'm sure, that's different to telling from registration plates however. Very few are linked directly to place of origin now.

BackwardsGoing · 19/12/2020 22:21

No pitchfork-related incidents reported over the summer. Much to the disappointment of some media which did their best to shit stir.

CornishTiger · 19/12/2020 22:22

We’ve been really lucky so far with little restrictions.

It won’t be like that come mid to end of Jan. our cases will rise. We are experiencing an influx of visitors. Will batten down the hatches and double our efforts to prevent spread.

transformandriseup · 19/12/2020 22:24

I'm pretty sure my car, bought in Truro, was registered in a tier 3 area.

tootyfruitypickle · 19/12/2020 22:24

What about the elderly in the SE? Shouldnt you be feeling more sorry for them? Shitstorm already here thanks .

LubaLuca · 19/12/2020 22:24

Portsmouth is quite landlocked and almost an island in itself.

How can it be landlocked and an island? Admittedly, I don't know much about that stretch of coast, but I can't get my head around this.

yeOldeTrout · 19/12/2020 22:25

omg, I never knew car registrations had regional anchoring!
Teach me.
Sadly my car registration comes from 300 miles away, so doesn't tell anybody anything about were the owner lives.

DH's car is quite local in origins, though.

IndecentFeminist · 19/12/2020 22:26

They do to their original place of purchase/registration when new, provided you buy in your local area and don't travel for a better deal. But when they're sold they are often moved around the country so you can't tell any more.

Pipandmum · 19/12/2020 22:27

I live in tier one area and definitely had second homers cime down for the holidays. We've been very fortunate and I'm sure the retailers are delighted they can stay open a few more days before Christmas.

Landlocked the wrong word.

Portsmouth is bordered by sea on three sides so is well insulated. As is much of Cornwall tbf.

Don't feel bad for us. I feel very fortunate. I'm sure we won't stay in tier 1 for long but if we don't it'll be as much be us I'd family moving as tourists coming in.

No just the media, there were loads of mumsnet thread telling people to stay away from their Cornwall.m and tourist weren’t welcome.
FuckOffBorisYouTwat · 19/12/2020 22:34

Save your pity for us northerners who have been in much tighter restrictions than most the country since July.

KitKatastrophe · 19/12/2020 22:34

@User158340

In terms of “ done well” I think Portsmouth did well to only go into a higher tier now. It’s the most densely populated U.K. city outside of London.

Portsmouth is quite landlocked and almost an island in itself.

"Landlocked" and "an island" are opposites...
CornishTiger · 19/12/2020 22:35

Encouraging people to stay away and being rude and unwelcoming whilst here are two different things.

Starlightstarbright1 · 19/12/2020 22:35

In answer to your question . No people in Cornwall are not who i feel sorry for and do have family down their.

I feel for tge people heading into tier 4 tomorrow, the independent shops replying on Christmas trade having to close, families who are having to change Christmas, loads of people but people in Cornwall? No

PimlicoJo · 19/12/2020 22:36

You feel sorry for people in Cornwall? They've done very well?

I'm now in Tier 4 so I must have done very very badly....
What nonsense.

itsgettingweird · 19/12/2020 22:36

Portsmouth isn't practically an island.

It is actually an island!

But also it's very densely populated and accessed easily via the ferry port, for work and from Gosport via the ferry.

BackwardsGoing · 19/12/2020 22:37

No just the media, there were loads of mumsnet thread telling people to stay away from their Cornwall.m and tourist weren’t welcome.

As is often the case, these people/threads were not representative of the population as a whole. But journalists were very quick to amplify even the mildest of negative attitudes.

Porcupineinwaiting · 19/12/2020 22:37

I dont feel sorry for people in Cornwall, I feel insanely jealous of them. Feel quite sorry for the people of Leicester- and for myself.
