Feel really bad for Cornwall

They've done so well to keep their numbers down and have done whatever has been asked of them, yet the Christmas plans are now being restricted.

I've got family down there and they've said everyone there is livid and are afraid of Londoners turning up and spreading the mutated strain around the county.

@scentedgeranium

Lib Dem remainer here, down in the bottom right hand corner of the UK. But yes lots did vote Leave and boy are they going to reap the whirlwind
Oh do one.

Stop stirring

Left hand corner!!!

@UnshakenNeedsStirring

They voted leave so, no I dont feel bad for them
Again, 'they' didn't. A small majority of them/us did, much like in the rest of the country. Quite a lot of us didn't - the majority in the constituency I live in for a start. If you're going to take that approach to Cornwall, why not extend it to the rest of the UK? 'They' voted to leave by a small majority too. In fact, let's extend it further. Why feel sorry for anyone that Covid and Brexit have been so catastrophic this year - 'we' voted this government in by a landslide. We deserve all we get, don't we?
PortiasPlumUpduffedPudding · 21/12/2020 08:20

It may be appropriate to look up the voting figures before hurling insults. 44% of us here in Cornwall didn't vote leave and as I posted yesterday I'm sick of being stereotyped and lumped into a huge unresearched generalisation. Like elsewhere in the Country we're individuals and not are not a huge half a million people
target to be constantly insulted.

Mummyratbag · 21/12/2020 08:27

It's luck. Very grateful to live here, but suspect numbers will jump. They are already rising 18-44/100k in about a week. Still low, but that is more than double. My biggest worry is being at the end of a collapsing food chain..

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 21/12/2020 09:09

Surely there are more people going in and out of London every day than come to Cornwall, especially this time of year. Londoners are not blaming tourists for their problems and aren't on Mumsnet going "please don't come here" even though our hospitals are stretched too, we have a large population already and a lot of deprivation. The new strain has been more of a problem here in London as it's so densely populated just as the original strain hit this area hard first back in March. As PP have said, the new strain will be everywhere and as it's already take hold in the SE but lockdown didn't start until Sat, it's hardly fair to blame the people going in and out of london for spreading it. Lots of people have second homes here too but we don't blame them either. For some reason Cornwall have been acting like they are so special and different and the only area to have tourists and second home owners.

ExeterMummaMia · 21/12/2020 09:23

Do you expect Londoners and other people from higher tiers would only ignore rules and visit Cornwall? Of course, they wouldn't possibly go ANYWHERE else in the UK... like their hometowns for example, all of which are highly likely to be outside of Cornwall.

What I'm trying to say is that this isn't really an issue exclusive to Cornwall is it?!?!

Cornwall hasn't been acting like it's so special. Cornwall hasn't been acting like anything! Cornwall is a county of half a million people - with varying views and ideas, just like anywhere else. The idea that different areas should blame each other for things (London is irresponsibly spreading the new strain around the country, for example) is ridiculous. We're all people in a horrible situation. Some of us, as individuals and as communities, have been hit harder than others, but blaming and othering really isn't going to help.
Goatscheesewithhoney · 21/12/2020 09:47

@scentedgeranium - it was the over 50’s that did it.

I was teaching A-level students (in Cornwall) a couple of years ago. One of them proudly told me that her mini dissertation would involve asking people what they voted, then asking them to complete an IQ test, so she could prove that people who voted leave were stupid and, due to this, didn’t understand what they were voting for and should be banned from voting in future.

My head of dept nearly combusted when I told him the story Grin (and, obviously, I explained to her that there were some ethical issues with her proposed research and that it wouldn’t be able to go ahead in that format).

pinbinpin · 21/12/2020 10:08

All I know is I didn't vote for the Conservatives or Brexit and haven't been to Cornwall this year (even though it's lovely and Inline beaches) so none of it is my bloody fault! Grin

I do hope the parts of Cornwall who are complaining remember it next summer when they're also complaining about lack of custom at their pop up gastro vans, tea shops fighting for survival, how hard it is to make a living in the Cornwall, no jobs for young people yadda yadda. I'm going to Devon.

Stop Cornwall bashing!!

Just stop.

Aerial2020 · 21/12/2020 10:33

Cornwall have 'been acting like they're so special'

A whole county of people, individual people , summed up in one stupid sentence like you know this as fact. Completely stupid thing to write.

Hmm

Please don't, we don't appreciate immature, "told you so" spitefulness. Why the hell would you gloat about the possibility of people losing their livelihood?

scentedgeranium · 21/12/2020 11:46

@Goatscheesewithhoney in general yes. But me and my DH and our friends fall into that demographic!

Dickorydockwhatthe · 22/12/2020 15:13

@thegcatsmother

I'm pretty sure those living in Cornwall close to the bridge will be using our NHS service rather then the one in Truro!

I'm equally sure that tax paid for the NHS is for the whole thing, not the individual Health Authorities. It'd be a bit daft for someone in Saltash or the Tamar Valley to go all the way to Truro, when Derriford is much closer. I expect some of the staff in 'your' NHS service live in Cornwall too.

And yes exactly it does make sense for them to use the closest NHS services I'm not disputing that. What I'm saying is why are they still Tier one when they have a small hospital capacity and the closest hospital is in Tier 2 and over stretched.
BackwardsGoing · 23/12/2020 10:24

Breaking news: Cornwall has been put into Tier 4 with immediate effect as 100s of pirates have returned home for Christmas.

Apparently the Aaarrh rate has quadrupled.

dangerrabbit · 23/12/2020 10:48

Government are doing well with their divide and rule strategy!
