I’m so fed up now. This is probably the least Xmasy I have felt since the one after my mum died (she died on the 29th December 2009).

I feel like it’s all being dangled in front of us then snatched away again. Iv just seen they have cut it down to one day only that you are allowed to mix. Like wtf?! It’s 6 days before Christmas!

My DD will be heading north east for uni but rest assured they have to have 3 tests on return.

NaughtipussMaximus · 19/12/2020 17:16

@Delatron

The government were stupid to make a call on Christmas on the 24th November
This is so true.

Though I’m surprised anyone trusted the U-turn King anyway. Triumph of hope over experience.

CountFosco · 19/12/2020 17:18

Boris can go fuck himself. My brother has been alone in London since March. He's coming to us whatever Boris says. We've followed all the rules but I am not leaving him alone for Christmas to save the life of an 85 year old I don't know.

Benjispruce2 · 19/12/2020 17:18

Absolutely @Delatron

Benjispruce2 · 19/12/2020 17:18

@CountFosco that’s allowed!

Benjispruce2 · 19/12/2020 17:19

If he’s in your support bubble.

FreekStar · 19/12/2020 17:22

Cancelling Christmas day plans doesn't mean people have to be alone without food- there's still time to get some!

bumblingbovine49 · 19/12/2020 17:22

@ChasingRainbows19

Italy have just announced a lockdown, many other countries across Europe have been doing similar all week with some/minimal Christmas mixing allowed.... it’s shocking to do it so close to Christmas but the Christmas relaxation was for too long in the first place.

New strains of covid are known about its not a new thing with any virus for it to mutate but this particular one must be worrying the medical side for this to happen.

The lockdown in Italy for over Christmas has been planned for ages . My family in Italy knew last month which days over Christmas that they would not be allowed to travel outside their local region over Christmas except for essential and work reasons
CountFosco · 19/12/2020 17:23

Yes, we are being his support bubble but we live in another part of England so DH was going to drive and pick him up.

lyralalala · 19/12/2020 17:31

That's assuming people can get out.

For example our neighbour was due to go to his son's for Christmas. The chances of him being able to get a shopping delivery now are zilch.

Luckily other people locally will step in and shop for him, but not everyone will have that back up.

likeamillpond · 19/12/2020 17:33

@ilovesooty

Why would anyone have no food or anything ?
Exactly. People manage to eat food on every other day of the year.

Let's just wait and see how many private boats appear off Seaview on the Isle of Wight pretty soon... Wink. I was speaking to a friend who works in a laundry which does a lot of the hotel's bed linen, their turnover has gone up by 50% this year. Never mind about the school bubbles that have had to shut eh?

This. Except it is most likely our last Christmas with DP as he has been given months to live. We will have some form of family time with his (adult) daughter as we don't have the luxury of Christmas 2021 to look forward to.
IndecentFeminist · 19/12/2020 17:37

Yup, the 2.5mill beach house my husband oversees as part of his job has been rammed with friends of the owners throughout. Even on strictest lockdown the private boats would come over, anchor up and head on in. 🤷

shamus2020 · 19/12/2020 17:41

Can anyone answer this for me I've searched everywhere.
I'm a single parent to 5 (18,18,16,6,4) I've been bubbled with my parents since forever as I don't drive and my parents have been helping me out a lot. They live on the next street and was coming to me for Xmas day. Can they still come or is the bubble thing not applying to people in tier 4, thanks Confused

Eckhart · 19/12/2020 17:42

The hospitals are filling up faster than we can manage. When we lock down, they empty out to some extent.

What other solutions to this problem are there?

Remmy123 · 19/12/2020 17:42

Boris is a prat

I'm having two family members over my plans haven't changed, but I have them over now anyway - assess your own risk

elephantoverthehill · 19/12/2020 17:43

Goodness, especially as all yacht club racing was cancelled this year even though it is a very socially distanced sport. Most teams are family based around Cowes.

Remmy123 · 19/12/2020 17:43

@shamus2020 if they want to come then let them - they help you with the kids so makes no odds.

SidSparrow · 19/12/2020 17:45

I see the 'it's a load of nonsense' thread was removed. Censorship or what. Only allowed to have the right sort of opinions.

LuluJakey1 · 19/12/2020 17:46

Oh get a grip OP. It is one day. Food shops are open in Tier 4. No one will be unable to buy food. Just get on with it.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 19/12/2020 17:48

London should have been in tier 3 from the get go. The reason it wasn’t was because of number of hospital spaces and nothing to do with the infection rate.

Supersimkin2 · 19/12/2020 17:50

There is evidently a more serious risk with the new mutation and transmission.

There isn't. Covid 2.0 is not more dangerous. And medics are a lot better at curing it than Covid 1.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/12/2020 17:51

The nonsense thread was probably removed for the same reasons anti vax threads are... MN takes a dim view of disinformation.

But I haven't read the deletion message as I am on my phone!

Pumpertrumper · 19/12/2020 17:52

As the wife of an intensive care doctor I fully support the decision that’s been made and regardless of poor timing am glad they’ve made it.

As a mother, sister, daughter and grand daughter I’m gutted and fuming! Luckily we are still able to mix on Christmas Day but it’s removed our ability to split up our visiting to protect a vulnerable household (due to visit first) from a higher risk household (due to visit second). Now we are all having to gather together on the same day in the same place putting the first household at much greater risk. (Can’t still visit separately due to travel times).

It’s removed our ability to exercise common sense. Either we see them together or we don’t see them!
