I’m on CPAP - please help me survive hell

I’m on CPAP. Everyone is doing their best to keep me alive but I feel traumatised. Family and friends are still asleep. Is anyone there to talk to me?

Was pure torture. I was in for weeks. But I survived.

Blimey im so sorry. I will be around if you need or want someone to talk to. Im glad it seems to be helping Flowers

krustybread · 19/12/2020 18:17

Fuck, OP. That sounds bloody awful.

Stay strong. And as another poster said, try and focus on the oxygen you're getting rather than the restrictiveness of the CPAP.

Sending love.

Abcdecat · 19/12/2020 18:31

Sending my best wishes and also a little tip - there’s more than one type of CPAP mask available, one that goes over the nose and mouth, then a bigger one that covers nearly the whole face.

My patients often find the bigger one more comfortable, especially after having the smaller one on for a while (which can dig in at the nose) You might know this already but I always try to offer this as it can make a difference (even if small).

I hope you are being well looked after, and as a critical care nurse I say - please tell your nurses if your feeling uncomfortable, anxious or anything, nurses may be busy but we will always do our best to help and there’s many things that can be done to help manage symptoms. Other than that a lot of my patients like to watch some TV/ movies to pass the time, every critical care unit I’ve worked in has had some form of TV/laptop that patients can use so this should be an option too.

Best wishes xx

Abcdecat · 19/12/2020 18:34

Just realise someone has told you this already. My apologies.^

Plussizejumpsuit · 19/12/2020 18:35

Really hope you get off it soon op. I can't imagine how awful it is
Sending love.

Spitoutthebauble · 19/12/2020 18:46

Just chiming in to say I’ve just read all your posts, OP. You sound amazing and your situation sounds rubbish.

SecretNutellaFix · 19/12/2020 18:57

My husband has been in hospital for 9 days, 5 of them in ICU.
He was moved back to a general ward yesterday, taken off the infusion he was on yesterday and today he's been off the oxygen for most of the day.
He's very anxious, and wants to leave. At the moment we're looking towards Tuesday as a good day, but Monday if he does well overnight and tomorrow. We've had long text chats today- I think if I face timed him he'd lose it totally being able to see my face but not touch me.
It is a terrifying time for everyone needing the specialist care and I wish you a strong recovery.
For family outside, unable to visit it's been hard too. We want to be able to be there with you, and we can't. I'm glad that you are improving steadily.

LittleSpyintheSky · 19/12/2020 20:17

Thank you abcdecat. I just want to tell you that I am so grateful to you and your colleagues for everything you do 💐💐💐

Secretnutella - I’m so sorry you and your husband are going through this too. My husband is going through the mill so I know you must be too, I don’t want to hear his voice either. It’s too much. Take the very best of care and I send all my best wishes for your husbands speedy recovery xx

Sending you much love and thinking of you xx

mineofuselessinformation · 19/12/2020 22:15

If you find yourself struggling again, ask for some diazepam as long as it's suitable for you:
My DM had to have something similar when admitted with a flare of her COPD. It was the only thing that helped her tolerate it.
I hope you have a better night.

littleowl1 · 19/12/2020 22:19

Dearest @LittleSpyintheSky
I’m sorry I am messaging quite late. I just wanted to say how much I hope you have had a better day today. Sending you all my best. X
