We got told today that both my 6 year old daughter and 4year old sons school classes ha e had 2 teachers test positive they now both have to isolate for 10 days. Fair enough I tottaly and full understand this and effectively I'm isolating now also being the parent whilst husband can still work.

So off I start ringing the 2 family members who we was going to see over the Christmas bubble dates. The 1st family fully accepted it no issue at all and dint kick up a fuss as they both have health risks. 2nd family who is my parents really wasn't happy and the response was well were see what happens so to me that sounds like there going to totally ignore my request of don't come round. I was shocked I didn't even know what to say .I never like to upset my parents but we really don't feel comfortable with them being at our home. (They was only coming for an hour or so and would have been sat by our back doors with masks on)however more so now we wouldn't want this to happen

It's Christmas ffs, you have not tested positive so why can't they come over for an hour?

TheDailyCarbuncle · 18/12/2020 19:31

Do you genuinely think there's a risk of your parents being infected by children who haven't tested positive if they sit outside with masks on? Really?

mamaoffourdc · 18/12/2020 19:33

You are doing the right thing, self isolate xx

Frazzled2207 · 18/12/2020 19:35

if they really were only coming for an hour to with masks on, assuming the children weren't displaying any symptoms, I'd be ok with this.

Mousehole10 · 18/12/2020 19:35

If they’re sat outside with masks on what’s the problem?

AnneElliott · 18/12/2020 19:36

Same as Frazzled. If they're not coming in then what is the issue?

steppemum · 18/12/2020 19:36

I think your parents arejust upset that Christmas is even more pants than they had thought.

realistically, if your kids have not been in close contact with the teacher since they started isolating (I assume that they have been off for a couple fo days if only just got test results)then by Christmas day they will have been not in contact for 10 days.

Nearly all cases show symptoms before 10 days. So if none of your kids get sick, then it is probably no different safety wise. Particularly in the context you state.

But I also understand your reasoning to cancel.

MillieEpple · 18/12/2020 19:36

Self isolate and see them outside the isolation period. So 2 days late

Skipsurvey · 18/12/2020 19:37

do what you think is best op
dont be persuaded otherwise.

TheFairyCaravan · 18/12/2020 19:38

I wouldn’t be happy with them coming. Children can be positive without showing any symptoms.

They can come for an hour on a different day

ineedaholidaynow · 18/12/2020 19:40

Surely the children need the masks not the grandparents. Didn’t think you were meant to have visitors if someone is self isolating in the house.

Lemons1571 · 18/12/2020 19:42

Are they likely to stay outside with masks though? I would worry that they say this with all good intentions, but it’s cold, then it rains, one thing leads to another and you all end up in the lounge at barely a metre distance. Are they likely to push the boundaries in this way?

Bettydot · 18/12/2020 19:43

I’m sorry you have to isolate that’s rubbish timing but I totally agree with you. Children are often asymptomatic so personally I wouldn’t take the risk. Hopefully you’ll be able to see them a few days later. I hope you have a lovely Christmas.

Sennetti · 18/12/2020 19:45

if thats the attitude they have are they REALLY going to 'sit outside with masks on'??

Sennetti · 18/12/2020 19:46

christmas or not.....they are ISOLATING.
ineedaholidaynow · 18/12/2020 19:48

Of course they can come over, because we all know the virus is having a Christmas break too Angry

Weirdlynormal · 18/12/2020 19:49

FFS and we wonder why it’s spreading again. The clue is ‘isolating’. Well done OP, you are right. Flowers

herecomestheSon · 18/12/2020 19:49

Can you celebrate Xmas another day? like New year's eve for instance?

cjpark · 18/12/2020 19:54

Well done OP, you've done the right thing. 10 days isolation is just that - isolation. Ignore their comments and keep them safe.

LTAS · 18/12/2020 19:55

OK so for all of you who say- its Christmas ,whats the difference , your kids won't have it , sit in the garden , wear the masks ect ect .

My parents will push it there say its cold then it rains and then before you know it as someone has said they will come inside.
And it not just that its a decision me and my husband don't want to do..we don't want to be the reason they both could get poorly

But I didn't start the post for that I started it to ask what would you say back to the comment they made

For those of you who are saying we should isolate and were doing what is best thank you 👏 👏 I do believe we are doing what is right however it is rubbish timing and I really need to come up with something fun and festive to do in the house now with them ideas welcome?

Because isolating means no guests Hmm

It’s little wonder it’s spreading so much.

LTAS · 18/12/2020 19:56

Also were tier 3 so were not meant to have people in the house outside of the dates so I think doing something christamassy another day isn't going to be very possible either .

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/12/2020 19:58

Do you have a garden? I'm wondering if you could make a rest place for Santa's reindeer? I've no idea what they would like to have a little rest and feel comfy for a bit. Your dc might though. Could take a bit of planning,

Quartz2208 · 18/12/2020 19:58

Presumably though the 10 day isolating period (which you must follow) ends before the Christmas window finishes so cant they come over on the 26/27th

kidscreatemess · 18/12/2020 19:59

Well done OP. You are doing the right thing.
No one wants to be able to say "remember last Christmas when granny caught COVID from us and died".

January is going to be shit.
