We got told today that both my 6 year old daughter and 4year old sons school classes ha e had 2 teachers test positive they now both have to isolate for 10 days. Fair enough I tottaly and full understand this and effectively I'm isolating now also being the parent whilst husband can still work.

So off I start ringing the 2 family members who we was going to see over the Christmas bubble dates. The 1st family fully accepted it no issue at all and dint kick up a fuss as they both have health risks. 2nd family who is my parents really wasn't happy and the response was well were see what happens so to me that sounds like there going to totally ignore my request of don't come round. I was shocked I didn't even know what to say .I never like to upset my parents but we really don't feel comfortable with them being at our home. (They was only coming for an hour or so and would have been sat by our back doors with masks on)however more so now we wouldn't want this to happen

@ineedaholidaynow

Are your parents good with technology so you can FaceTime or similar?
They think they are there really not though and make everything 10x complicated tah. What it needs to be .

Nearly all cases show symptoms before 10 days. So if none of your kids get sick, then it is probably no different safety wise.

This is totally incorrect.

Very high percentages of children shot no symptoms at all.

Imo you are doing the right thing. Your parents are asking you to do the wrong thing. Can't you move the day to after Christmas Day?

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 18/12/2020 20:55

This thread has reminded me why I prefer my cat to people. She has more sense than some of you.

LTAS · 18/12/2020 20:56

@drumst1ck

Sorry might not be right with the dates here but would the end of isolation be the 27th where you could see them inside for the one day? Effectively move Xmas day until then?
We've been told to isolate up and including Sunday 27th December. Which is also when the bubble dates end

I thought that was for the symptoms to develop not when a covid test turns from negative to positive. Thank you for your response @RainMoon

Arthersleep · 18/12/2020 20:58

It's a tricky one. I am all for following the rules. However, although my children aren't required to self isolate, they could still have been exposed to Covid and not realise. The ten days isolation is from the last contact that they had with those members of staff, so you might not have to do the full ten days if they haven't been taught by them for the last couple of days. Most symptoms take about 5 days to emerge, although an of course take up to ten. I think that if your parents wish to visit, sit by the open doors, keep their distance and wear masks, that is actually a good solution. We have set up a fire pit on our patio so that my parents can visit but keep warm and stay safe. Can you do the same? Or give them a blanket, hot water bottle and a hot drink? And an umbrella if it rains etc. I think that, if you can include them safely for an hour, then you should do.

ceeveebee · 18/12/2020 21:00

OP we were told today too, and only have to isolate to 26th. It depends when the teacher was last in school. Unlike the teacher was in yesterday as not enough time to go for test and get the results

LTAS · 18/12/2020 21:01

@DrSeuss

Yay! Christmas Mark Two on 28th! Your kids will love it!
But we won't be allowed that either because of the bubble dates. And I'll be honest with you the fact that its the law that no-one is allowed inside in tier 3 .I don't feel comfortable with that either

How do people get to 9 months into a pandemic without having the most basic understanding of the rules?

Totally agree.

Would be a refreshing chance to here from those rule breakers where it’s all gone wrong. They’ll be plenty in January.

RedskyAtnight · 18/12/2020 21:05

If they were only coming for an hour or so anyway, just say you'll see them in the park (or garden if you're Tier 2) after your isolation period ends. Take mince pies and drinks. The children can play while the adults chat.

lorisparkle · 18/12/2020 21:09

In my experience we had a positive case in my class bubble. The person was in class on the Thursday, took test on Thursday, positive result Friday morning.

Some close contacts took test even though asymptomatic so 'against the rules'. Of those 2 contacts were positive- who knows how long they had been positive for.

One who initially tested negative became ill and tested positive nearly a week later.

Two others tested positive a couple of days afterwards.

Keep everyone safe and self isolate- they have already reduced it to 10 days

LTAS · 18/12/2020 21:15

Just want to add also. For those saying to get a test done-We actually have weekly covid testing as were part of ONS study Survey. So I'll find out in a weeks time whether we are currently asymptomatic but even if that's negative it won't be changing our minds. If its positive obviously I'll be in contact with the school and then do what action will be needed

LTAS · 18/12/2020 21:17

And thank you for all the sensible and positive reasurring comments. And for the all negatives well no wonder the situation is so bad with thoughts like these

So you have a problem with tour parents, who were going to sit outside with masks on! Coming Iver for an hour but you are fine with your dh going yo work Confused. That makes absolutely no sense OP.

cptartapp · 18/12/2020 21:19

It isn't just 'teenagers spreading it' as a pp suggested. A lot of it is due to the older generation (for whom most of this ironically is aimed at protecting) such as this instance, picking and choosing which rules to follow.
I see it in my job everyday. NHS. As the parent of teenagers with supposed exams next year, it's soul destroying.

Quartz2208 · 18/12/2020 21:22

@LTAS having experienced it and others I expect that is the initial date you are given. Once PHE have probably looked at when your children were in contact with the positive case (which wouldnt be today) as I said that will move to the 25th or 26th

m0therofdragons · 18/12/2020 21:28

Oddly France has a 7 day isolation period. This is why I kept dc home the last few days and school were very understanding. I really want to see my parents having not seen them for months

Scautish · 18/12/2020 21:31

@BethlehemIsInTier1

It's Christmas ffs, you have not tested positive so why can't they come over for an hour?
you @BethlehemIsInTier1 and those sharing your opinion are prolonging this. Government incompetence and fuckwittery does not exonerate you from acting like a decent human.
ellalina · 18/12/2020 21:32

@Robbo1961

My wife is a TA at school. One of the children has just found out they are positive. We have missed our grandson's birthday today and now will miss Xmas with them because my wife has to self isolate. Yes she cried. No we won't break the rules. This is why there is a pandemic, idiots flouting the rules.
this exactly.

I am a TA too.
I lost my job in July, because of the pandemic.
I truly feel for my ex colleagues having to work in these conditions, with half the school off self isolating, at any one time.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 18/12/2020 21:35

@ilovesooty would you like to explain your "oh forgiveness sake" comment?

Longdistance · 18/12/2020 21:39

My dd was a contact in her class. Not someone she sits near or associated with. We had two weeks. Fil wanted to see us. I said ‘dd is quarantined, if you want to come over, it’s at your own risk’. He came over. He’s fine. Dd had already done a week.
I still think 10 days is too much 🤷🏼‍♀️

Canyoncall · 18/12/2020 21:39

@m0therofdragons struggling to understand pertinence with ref to France (and am French) OP you are doing the right thing and ignore those who say otherwise- go with your instinct here and do not be press ganged into thinking differently

Shall the dad stay at home and lose 10 days worth of work ? Can’t you see the difference between compulsory and optional? Optional : no need to see the family because it’s Christmas. Compulsory going to work if you want some food on your plate.
Scautish · 18/12/2020 21:45

@Longdistance

I drove all the way from Cornwall to Scotland with no seatbelt when I was younger. I didn’t crash and die. Applying your logic I should never bother wearing a seatbelt.

Because your FIL didn’t catch COVID does not justify ignoring the rules. This is fundamentally important.
