We got told today that both my 6 year old daughter and 4year old sons school classes ha e had 2 teachers test positive they now both have to isolate for 10 days. Fair enough I tottaly and full understand this and effectively I'm isolating now also being the parent whilst husband can still work.

So off I start ringing the 2 family members who we was going to see over the Christmas bubble dates. The 1st family fully accepted it no issue at all and dint kick up a fuss as they both have health risks. 2nd family who is my parents really wasn't happy and the response was well were see what happens so to me that sounds like there going to totally ignore my request of don't come round. I was shocked I didn't even know what to say .I never like to upset my parents but we really don't feel comfortable with them being at our home. (They was only coming for an hour or so and would have been sat by our back doors with masks on)however more so now we wouldn't want this to happen

@LTAS

Also were tier 3 so were not meant to have people in the house outside of the dates so I think doing something christamassy another day isn't going to be very possible either .
No but you can meet outside (not in a private garden).

The rules say 10 days isolation so you can't see anyone until after Christmas.

But don't make it about you - it's not about "you not wanting to make them ill - that is extremely unlikely and even if they did get ill where would the evidence be they got it from your kids? It's about complying with the law.

ButtonMoonLoon · 18/12/2020 20:28

No wonder infection numbers are rising again if some of the attitudes on this thread are anything to go by.
The OPs children have been in sustained contact with people who have tested positive- therefore she is doing the correct and responsible thing in following the official guidance and isolating.

cologne4711 · 18/12/2020 20:28

@GlowingOrb

This is life right now. Thank you for actually following guidelines and isolating. You just have to be firm with your parents. You know you can do it. It gets much easier after the first time.
The OP probably sincerely hopes there won't be any more times!
goldenharvest · 18/12/2020 20:28

Tell them you are not prepared to break the law and you will phone or facetime them.

Sounds like it will be a nicer day without them

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 18/12/2020 20:28

If covid were the ebola, people would not be taking any chances. What do you think the school meant when they said self isolate? Not saying this to you op, but to the ones that say if you've not got symptoms it will be fine!

MitziK · 18/12/2020 20:30

@isadoradancing123

Surely its your parents choice
Not really if they're too stupid to make the right decision.

I refused to see DP's elderly GM when I had symptoms of something (maybe a rotten cold, maybe flu, I didn't know what it would be at that point but I felt pretty rough) even though it was suggested that I just took a painkiller and some cough mixture - because I was not prepared to be the person who killed a much loved Grandma.

Can you imagine how a child would feel if they were the one who passed it on, even if it were due to Grandpa deciding he'd had enough and came in the house to give them a hug? That's not something any child should have to carry with them - and most over a certain age would remember.

Inkpaperstars · 18/12/2020 20:32

I think you’re right OP. Firstly the dc are most likely to be asymptomatic so won’t be tested, and they could still transmit it outside with masks on, but more relevantly as you say, the best intentions could be cast aside and everyone ends up indoors letting down their guard.

LovePoppy · 18/12/2020 20:33

@isadoradancing123

Surely its your parents choice
It’s not her parents choice who she entertains.

It’s not her parents choice to break her isolation.

What is her parents choice, is how they react to a reasonable boundary

alpaca44 · 18/12/2020 20:34

OP, you’re definitely doing the right thing.

Isolating means not seeing anyone, inside or outside!

TinselToedElf · 18/12/2020 20:34

@HeddaGarbled

4 year old and 6 year old, I wouldn’t worry - it’s the teenagers who are spreading it, isn’t it?
Ff bloody s, seriously? You know there's a new strain around don't you? I fucking well give up.

I mean I'm flagging with it all like many of us are but this kind of shit just pisses me right off.

alpaca44 · 18/12/2020 20:35

I agree it’s not a question of choice, it’s the rules!!

Robbo1961 · 18/12/2020 20:36

My wife is a TA at school. One of the children has just found out they are positive. We have missed our grandson's birthday today and now will miss Xmas with them because my wife has to self isolate. Yes she cried. No we won't break the rules. This is why there is a pandemic, idiots flouting the rules.

ceeveebee · 18/12/2020 20:38

I’m in the same position - DS teacher tested positive today. There is no way I will have anyone visiting the house until the end of the 10 days, in fact we are delaying our Christmas dinner with family by 2 days instead.
The attitude on here is exactly what was all over the class whatsapp group, wanting to bend the rules and knock the odd couple of days off, this is exactly why it is spreading like wildfire.
Who gives a shit if people have to see each other a few days late, if it stops it spreading.
Bet people would not be saying the same about Eid, Diwali etc?

BingoGo · 18/12/2020 20:40

I don't get it. Why not just get tested instead of isolating? Then isolate if positive?
🤔

ceeveebee · 18/12/2020 20:42

Ffs
Because the virus takes time to incubate and so you can’t test your way out of the need to self isolate if you have been in close contact with a positive case

ceeveebee · 18/12/2020 20:42

How do people get to 9 months into a pandemic without having the most basic understanding of the rules?

MinesAPintOfTea · 18/12/2020 20:43

You are doing the right thing OP

Festive activities:
Paper chains
Christmas films
Dancing to Christmas music
Carol karaoke (use YouTube)
Make paper snowflakes and hang them in front of the windows
If you are getting a new food order, baking. Mince pies with a jar of mincemeat and ready made pastry are very easy
Make a nativity using toys (ie Lego)
Read Christmas stories
Make tree decorations

BingoGo · 18/12/2020 20:45

@ceeveebee

How do people get to 9 months into a pandemic without having the most basic understanding of the rules?
No need to be rude. It was a genuine question.

I'm in Denmark and it hasn't gotten bad here until now really. And I haven't been around anyone who has tested positive yet, so that's why I asked.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 18/12/2020 20:46

This thread is making me feel sick I feel so angry. Nine months, these utter bozos have had to get their heads around the basics. Nine months. OP, you're of course doing the right thing - not easy at all (I've done two full stints and two shorter stints waiting for results). Flowers

CarrieBlue · 18/12/2020 20:46

Regardless of covid, it’s not up to them to tell you they’re going to visit you when you’ve not invited them and have told them not to come. How rude!

EasterIssland · 18/12/2020 20:50

@BingoGo

I don't get it. Why not just get tested instead of isolating? Then isolate if positive? 🤔
Because you have to self isolate despite the outcome of the test. That’s what rhe law says. Month 12 of the pandemic and some people still don’t understand that a test is not 100% right.

God help us in January

RainMoon · 18/12/2020 20:50

@LTAS you are doing the right thing.
To everyone else saying have them inside for hugs, FFS. Find your nearest NHS worker and ask them how awful it is at the moment unable to give basic care to people. It’s horrendous

Quartz2208 · 18/12/2020 20:52

@Sennetti (and this is what the rules are not a discussion about them)

The 10 day isolation will start from the point where they had contact with the teacher which will either be the 17th (ending 26th) or more likely 16th (ending Christmas Day) giving if they want the 26th/27th within the Christmas rules and not tier 3.

The 10 day isolation may well look like it ends 10 days from today but I suspect it will be changed to the 25th or 26th fairly soon.

The current rules of 10 days will allow for it.

Whether she should is a personal choice the rules though will allow it.

The 10 days wont start from today they will start from last contact with the positive teacher

RainMoon · 18/12/2020 20:52

@BingoGo

I don't get it. Why not just get tested instead of isolating? Then isolate if positive? 🤔
You know you can test negative every day days 1-9 and then test positive on day 10? And only 90% of people develop it in 10 days, 10% still go to 14 days, but they thought people weren’t taking isolating seriously. Having a negative test doesn’t make you magically not have it
Inthewoodshed · 18/12/2020 20:53

Bloody hell. Looking at the responses on here you can see why we're going to end up with a third wave in January and lockdown again. Some posters just seem completely and utterly selfish.

OP, you're doing the right thing by making sure they isolate.
