Do you think we will be in full lockdown again in January?

What kind of person would want a proper lockdown? Who in their right mind would willingly want that misery, if not for themselves then others?

I don’t get it either.
Sennetti · 18/12/2020 18:31

@PinkSparklyPussyCat

ridiculous. close all retail

Please tell me when you say all retail you mean all 'non essential' retail and aren't suggesting supermarkets etc should be closed?

if thats to me then sorry yes, essential

of course not food.....buth then, is The Range really an essential retailer? as they stayed open throughout.i just dont think we are tough enough, hence still here nearly a year later

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 18/12/2020 18:36

I thought that was what you meant @Sennetti but some people do have some strange ideas on MN, especially when it comes to lockdown!

I'll be honest, I've never been in The Range so I don't know if it's essential or not. To me, essential is supermarkets and corner shops (selling everything, not some daft idea of taping off aisles), DIY (you never know when something might go wrong), chemists and pet shops.

Crumpetycrump · 18/12/2020 18:36

I think there are different problems in different areas driving the infection rates and unfortunately the current tier system doesn’t address this. Here in Bristol our spike appears to have been driven by students returning - not that I blame them for this at all. In other areas I think it might be school children - maybe the problem in Kent is due to the grammar system and children being bussed all over the county? In Leicestershire it seemed to be partially due to multi-generational living. Unfortunately all of these scenarios require different restrictions. I don’t know what the answer is.

Baileysforchristmas · 18/12/2020 18:46

Next we’ll see rations being delivered to our door or in our streets to be picked up. Have you seen the queues of trucks trying to come in and out of the UK?

Things are going to get worse and not just because of Covid

I think it may not be called lockdown, just Tier 3 almost everywhere.

JudesBiggestFan · 18/12/2020 18:54

Give me strength. No more lockdowns. The enduring faith people have in a totally incompetent government is mind-blowing. No more!

kittensarecute · 18/12/2020 20:26

I agree.

I had to be in town today because I had an appointment. If everyday it’s like today in a tier 3 city ... then not sure what’s the difference with normal life apart from restaurants being closed. So I can see quite a bit of difference between lockdown and tier 3
Hunnihun2 · 18/12/2020 21:47

@cologne4711

Northern Ireland will be.

Not sure I agree with restricted opening hours for essential shops, isn't it better to spread people out? And what happens if you work shifts and can't get to a shop? Not everyone has friends to help, and they're banning click and collect too (though might be for non-essential items).

What's with the curfew thing? The virus doesn't come out at night!

Has a lockdown been officially confirmed or just rumoured?
Burnthurst187 · 18/12/2020 21:58

The only shops I go to are to buy food so bring on another lockdown, food shops will still be open

We reacted soooooooo slowly in March and are really paying for it now

@southeastdweller

I don't want a proper lockdown because I enjoy it. I want something that will actually have some sort of effect. At the moment we have the worst of all worlds, half-arsed semi-lockdowns which are just as shit to endure while knowing they'll have fuck all effect on the numbers and only increase how long we have to spend in this state.
southeastdweller · 18/12/2020 22:27

I never said you'd enjoy it gannett (but I know there's some weirdo's on MN who would) but further tanking the economy and as a result indirectly fucking up the lives of many people (and their kids) isn't the answer, with these restrictions.

EasterIssland · 18/12/2020 22:33

I don’t want any but unluckily I have the fear that’s where we’re going to and I think many of us will have that feeling as well. Also as said , some people are behaving as like nothing is happening which is driving numbers up ... so for driving numbers down it’s lockdown ... it’s not what I want but it’s what works ... downside ? Many others lose their life for not having their appointments or lose their jobs or mh suffers. ... the longer we drag this on... the longer our lives will be impacted.

We can have a low Christmas and have tier 2-3 January or we can smash Christmas cuz it’s Christmas and have lockdown in January. Don’t think we can have a Christmas and no lockdown. Numbers are already going up

Requinblanc · 18/12/2020 22:42

And it would not make any difference...

The recent one did nothing at all. What is the point of endlessly repeating something that simply does not work? (beyond making more people unemployed and businesses go under each time that is...).

Absolutely no justification to have a full lock down as far as I am concerned. Schools and universities being open simply makes any lockdown a totally pointless exercise.

People are ignoring the rules as it is and did during the previous lockdown and I completely sympathise with that...The government needs to focus on increasing the vaccine capacity as fast as possible. Everything else has failed.

RememberSelfCompassion · 18/12/2020 22:44

I think schools need to go blended or some other provision to prevent spread. At the moment so many jobs and businesses are failing in lockdowns/tiers that are attempting to stop the spread but are ineffective. Keeping schools open at all costs is coming at a very high economic cost.

IncidentsandAccidents · 18/12/2020 22:48

I think there will be a lockdown in January and it will end up involving blended learning in secondaries (when it becomes clear that schools can't possibly mobilise mass testing along with volunteers, training, allocating space etc within the next three weeks).

Loopyloui · 18/12/2020 22:59

@ancientgran

I'm so tired of it. I've tried to keep busy, tried to be positive, I count my blessings but I feel so down.
You are not alone
Chelsea567 · 18/12/2020 23:06

Lockdown will only work if it's like the first one with everything shut including school. I should think they'll have do that at some point in the new year but then they will have to cancel exams for England and they seem to be desperate not to do that for some reason. But lockdown while keeping school open obviously doesn't work.

RememberSelfCompassion · 18/12/2020 23:12

Hmm a look at "tomorrowspapers.co.uk" suggests several papers think a lockdown/tier 4 is looming. I can't see it will do anything without shutting schools/blended learning. If only they'd sorted education in September...

MercyBooth · 18/12/2020 23:14

Will businesses accept being used as tokenism again.

Mousehole10 · 18/12/2020 23:28

I’m not going to comply with a lockdown if they don’t shut schools. I’m not wrecking my life anymore for something that doesn’t work.

ancientgran · 18/12/2020 23:30

@Loopyloui I'm sorry if you feel the same but somehow I feel less alone. In real life I put on a brave face so don't say how I feel. Maybe we will feel better tomorrow.

ancientgran · 18/12/2020 23:32

Keeping schools open at all costs is coming at a very high economic cost. It's hard isn't it. They talk about it ruining their future but if the whole economy is wrecked it won't help them will it.
