Do you think we will be in full lockdown again in January?

I can't do another lockdown.

yawnsvillex · 18/12/2020 13:32

Furlough been extended until end of April. More of this SHIT .....

Baileysforchristmas · 18/12/2020 13:33

You need to prepare your mh for it as it’s coming, I think it will last until March, then fingers crossed things might get better.

Loads of people genuinely can't wfh though and in my case I can't get furlough or any other help. According to the rules I should just carry on working.

Sometimes I think that those in power forget about some of the types of jobs ordinary people do. They seem to think most non essential workers work in an office but I know loads of people who have carried on working as normal because the official line was carry on working if you can't wfh.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 18/12/2020 14:21

If there's a likelihood of another lockdown after Christmas, I would much prefer it was announced now and planned for, rather than balancing on this bloody knife edge. If it's unlikely numbers are going to drop, and Christmas gatherings will send numbers up, just do it FGS. It's the uncertainty that does my head in.

RedToothBrush · 18/12/2020 14:22

Yes we will have a full lockdown in January. If not over New Year

Covid: Boris Johnson 'hoping to avoid' national lockdown

'Hoping'.

Hoping isn't going to stop shit. 'Hope and prayers' is just about the shittest abdication of responsibility that a politician has to offer.

Earlier, he tweeted a message warning people planning to form "Christmas bubbles" in the UK to start minimising contact with people from outside their households from today.

Well I've seen the M6 today. Its busier than I've seen it in months. Last Friday before Christmas when many people have finished work/school? I'm not sure they are travelling for essential purposes somehow.

We are fucked. And its only a matter of time before Johnson realises that scratching his balls doesn't mean he has courage and he has to announce another lockdown.

LegoPirateMonkey · 18/12/2020 14:30

Taking down the Christmas decorations and ringing in a new year in lockdown while we crash out of the EU with no deal is going to feel very bleak, I’ve got to say.

notangelinajolie · 18/12/2020 14:37

Yes. Infection rates will be through the roof because of Christmas. I know mumsnet isn't exactly representative of the UK but there are a hell of a lot of people on here who are planning on celebrating with family regardless.

Mousehole10 · 18/12/2020 14:46

Yes, think it will be 6 weeks from end of December. It won't make much difference to us as we are already in tier 3. Glad we have Christmas to see our family!

Chloemol · 18/12/2020 14:47

Yep, at least Wales and NI have been honest about it and preparing people now

Just wish Boris would do the same

Bonsai49 · 18/12/2020 14:51

Yes I think we will have another 4 weeks - it would be nice to be told in advance - but we’ll probably have it sprung on us again !

RosesAndHellebores · 18/12/2020 14:59

Yep. I think it will be infection rate/hospital capacity this time rather than time bound.

However, as the vaccinations are rolled out those at highest risk should reduce but we are unlikely to see the impact of that until x weeks after the second jab so there's a way to go yet.

Makes note to stock up on foundation, mascara and perfume!

tinselearedcow · 18/12/2020 15:08

Parts of the UK have already announced lockdowns. Johnson will faff and then announce one for England I bet.

Staffy1 · 18/12/2020 15:25

I don't know, they seem hell- bent on keeping schools open. It's needed, but I don't think the Christmas days will be to blame, it's all the disregarding of social distancing leading up to it. A few people from the same family meeting for Christmas doesn't compare with rallies by nitwits demonstrating against lockdowns and huge crowds shopping for unnecessary crap for presents.

Wejustdontknow · 18/12/2020 15:33

My ds14’s school have just confirmed they will be moving to remote learning only (except year 11) for at least the first week back in January but possibly longer, we are currently tier 3 in South Yorkshire. I was surprised by the message as they only broke up today but can’t say I blame them and they have given everyone plenty of notice to make arrangements if they need to

friendlycat · 18/12/2020 15:56

It's utter madness what some people are planning to do over Christmas and there will be a big price to pay for it.
Sadly with the current situation, then the Christmas mingling that many are doing, the increase and spread of Covid will literally go through the roof.
The results will be apparent end of January/early February. Of course another lockdown is looming as it is everywhere.

Flev · 18/12/2020 16:04

Tier 3 here. Only difference for us is that I can take our toddler for a walk in the rain with both grandparents at once rather than just one. Yay. Hmm

SomewhereEast · 18/12/2020 16:05

Soooo given Lockdown 2 has had a limited impact overall (its when the south-east started to take off) & the vaccine will take time to roll out, Lockdown 3 in January presumably means Lockdown 4 in March. And given public engagement noticeably decreased between Lockdown 1 and Lockdown 2, it won't exactly improve for Lockdown 3. Also how will he flog thid one to his MPs? The last one was flogged as giving-us-a-normal-Christmas, presumably the next one will be last-one-before-normality-returns. Except I think it we go for a third than a fourth is baked in down the line, because we've seen the finite impact of Lockdown 2.

So its a shit futile idea designed to cover the government's arse for another month, so yes it'll totally happen

Newnamefor2021 · 18/12/2020 16:06

Wales looks likely, least this area for a lockdown which could last a fair time. Although, let's face it, the government just make it up as they go along so who the hell knows.

Frazzled2207 · 18/12/2020 16:08

Probably but it depends on what happens over the next fortnight. I don't actually think Christmas is necessarily going to be a disaster. Lots of people I know are not seeing anyone and the ones that are are being careful - laying low for the next week for example. Plus schools will be closed and with the rubbish weather I think this will be the one time of year most people will be happy just to stay in. That's what I am hoping anyway.

Frazzled2207 · 18/12/2020 16:09

TBF a combination of lockdown 2 and tier 3 has brought cases down massively in Greater Manchester. So they can work.

bellinisurge · 18/12/2020 16:09

Yep. Because London and South clearly needs it. We've been in Tier 3 or equivalent here in Manchester since August and numbers are finally coming down.

ChristmasTreeFairy5000 · 18/12/2020 16:10

Yup. Even the schools are closed in Wales with this next lockdown. Xmas AngryGinGinGin

MarshaBradyo · 18/12/2020 16:14

Oh god feel for you. Is it closed or remote? Practically same thing with primary tbh.

Also for how long?

beela · 18/12/2020 16:20

Yes, definitely.

We are in tier 3. Infections have been steadily rising for the last fortnight. It may be the Christmas shopping effect, but it is pointing to the fact that tier 3 is not strict enough to keep the infections down.
