Do you think we will be in full lockdown again in January?

My hairdresser has NOT had ONE case. Its like walking onto the set of Silent Witness going in there. But wimmins things innit. So will probably have to shut again.

MercyBooth · 18/12/2020 17:02

And yes the November lockdown was sold to us as so to enable Christmas.

IntermittentParps · 18/12/2020 17:25

What’s the point? Lockdown doesn’t work.
A proper lockdown worked in Wuhan.

We need to get this virus under control. The only way to stop it spreading is to keep people apart from each other. While we've got people going to the hairdressers, cramming into shops and children elbow to elbow in schools we just won't be able to stop the spread. Agree with this. It seems screamingly obvious that if people continue to mix the virus will continue to spread. My own feeling is that households mixing indoors (like they will be at Christmas...) is the worst culprit; but having schools and shops open etc can't help.

Hopefully? There's some very strange people on MN. I've never met anyone in real life who wants a 'proper' lockdown. Loads of people I know want one.

Exactly! The places they keep shutting, cafes, hairdressers, family run shops are probably the lowest sources of transmission. Even large chain pubs are hot on tables and spacing etc as the fines etc aren’t worth the risk.
PuppyMonkey · 18/12/2020 17:31

For the two previous lockdowns I had hair appointments the very day they started, so I’ve now got one booked for December 29th - just giving everyone the heads up.GrinSad

Jenasaurus · 18/12/2020 17:34

Are the restaurants and pubs closed in Tier 3, if so they could do put us all in Tier 3, not sure about schools though.

IntermittentParps · 18/12/2020 17:36

Open for takeaways only (restaurants/cafes; don't know about pubs actually)

Sennetti · 18/12/2020 17:38

the tier system is rubbish

shops need to close, and schools too. closing pubs and restaurants is having zero impact

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 18/12/2020 17:40

Pubs can offer takeaways, I've just ordered my Sunday roast from my local.

Because China is a communist country and the people are too scared not to do as they're told. I don't want to be taken away from home if I'm ill, fined for going out without my mobile phone etc. As well as that, does anyone really believe anything the Chinese government says?

Sennetti · 18/12/2020 17:41

i work in a large chain 'essential retailer' and its like theres no pandemic anymore

too many 'mask exempt' to make it believable
no 1 or 2 metre distancing, a foot if you're lucky
customers expect full service as usual
customers expect products placed in their vehicles for them
cash tills demanded
masks if worn, pulled down to bark/speak at staff
mobile phones thrust at us showing products they want
nobody sanitising hands or their trolleys...not giving sanitising stations a second glance

ridiculous. close all retail

Sennetti · 18/12/2020 17:43

oh and customers demanding to use the toilets which are now just for staff only! we dont want to be mixing that close with customers thanks, keep out

Of course, it’s the price we pay for having Christmas.

Bushola · 18/12/2020 17:49

@NotGenerationAlpha

Of course, it’s the price we pay for having Christmas.
That’s what they’ll tell us. It’s like an abusive relationship.

I gave you Christmas and we need something in return.

MorningTeas · 18/12/2020 17:50

Yep definitely, the numbers are high anyway, January is going to be miserable.

PollyIndia · 18/12/2020 17:54

I spent a fortune on viral decontamination misting units for my yoga studio. Everyone brings own mats, files in, fresh air in studio, masks on, 2m between each mat etc. We have had to close in tier 3 but sweaty gyms where everyone is touching the same equipment, higher level of aerosol expiration etc, are allowed to be open. It just feels so inconsistent! We haven’t had a single case in the studio since we reopened end July. And again, mainly female activity and female owned businesses in yoga and group exercise classes. I am sure there will be another lockdown. It is so tough. All my teachers are freelance and they get nothing for me being closed. I carried on paying them through lockdown 1 and 2 but there is no more money left now Confused

Crakeandoryx · 18/12/2020 17:57

The whole country will be tier 3. Schools are already delayed in returning and community testing is being used to reduce the spread. Lockdown is possible. I really hope people listen to what is being said about Christmas bubbles and only do it when completely necessary.

We have seriously scaled back our plans and have declined many offers. I know a lot of our family and friends are choosing to not mix.

gingercat02 · 18/12/2020 17:57

Yep! In and out of lockdown until summer I reckon

BaublesToIt · 18/12/2020 17:58

Will gyms close? Really won’t be able to cope in January without it, it’s the worst month of the year IMO. There’s been zero cases at my gym all through this.

All those people wanting to start their New Years resolutions tooGrin.

Frouby · 18/12/2020 17:58

Meh, not much difference between level 3 and lockdown, everyone will just move to tier 3, or if you are lucky, tier 2. It's better for the economy that way. The virus isn't spread by hairdressers or JD Sports. So they might as well stay open and save 1. The mental association with lockdown and 2. A few peoples jobs 3. A few million quid on furlough.

elmfield4 · 18/12/2020 17:58

@MercyBooth

I'm a hairdresser and we've not had one single case in our salon either and are PPE'd up to our eyeballs. I really don't understand why posters are calling for us to be closed AGAIN!!
mrsfeatherbottom · 18/12/2020 18:06

@cologne4711

Northern Ireland will be.

Not sure I agree with restricted opening hours for essential shops, isn't it better to spread people out? And what happens if you work shifts and can't get to a shop? Not everyone has friends to help, and they're banning click and collect too (though might be for non-essential items).

What's with the curfew thing? The virus doesn't come out at night!

I have a theory about the curfew, which is for the first week of the NI lockdown, and therefore includes New Year's Eve. I reckon that if you're not allowed at the shops or other people's houses, then it'll be easier to police the curfew. Otherwise, people will just say they were off to Tesco.

I'm really glad they are restricting NYE - that would have been a disaster.

tinytemper66 · 18/12/2020 18:12

Apparently when we go into lockdown in Wales or Level 4 as Drippy Drakeford is calling it, supermarkets will not be selling non- essential items again.
This will mean busier shops next week as people stock up and buy items they may have bought in the sales. One of mine needs a new coat but was going to wait to see if prices came down in new year. Now I will have to go before Christmas Eve.

RigaBalsam · 18/12/2020 18:25

I don't know anyone in real life that doesn't want one. The numbers are not looking good. That's not to say that aren't issues with them as there are clearly many.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 18/12/2020 18:26

ridiculous. close all retail

Please tell me when you say all retail you mean all 'non essential' retail and aren't suggesting supermarkets etc should be closed?
