Bad news for anyone who was hoping to get away next year :(

@BarbaraofSeville And yet the government is pressing on with this shit show. but what is the government's alternative now? We left on March 31st, 2020. The government has no mandate to negotiate going back in (which would now need renegotiations, where I cannot imagine we would have a very good hand either), it only has a mandate to leave.

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 12:23

@FastMovingLuxuryGoods we voted for sovereignty and the ability to sign buccaneering deals. We didn't vote for the spiteful EU to deliberately choose not to predict we'd approach no deal, sorry Australian deal, then spitefully choose not to unilaterally change their thousands of administrative systems and laws to avoid punishing dear old Britain.

FatGirlShrinking · 10/12/2020 12:24

This isn't news.

How is it a surprise to anyone that we are leaving the EU and as such will not have any of the benefits that come with being part of the EU.

Boris is never going to be able to negotiate that we keep all the bits we like and lose all the bits we don't. He couldn't negotiate his way out of a paper bag.

This is what the Brexiteer idiots voted for, hopefully they'll all be very happy with the outcome.

I think the whole thing will be a disaster and am hugely disappointed in the 52% of voters who dumped us in this mess.

SirGawain · 10/12/2020 12:25

@OpheliasCrayon

It's fine . C'mon what you fussing about. This is an oven ready brexit no?

Just like a world beating track and trace............

Oven ready or Half Baked?
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/12/2020 12:25

Zilla1😂

ArrowsOfMistletoe · 10/12/2020 12:26

I expect tourism will resume in the summer once vaccination has kicked in. There might be new rules around that. Meanwhile this is one of the consequences of leaving the EU - we are impacted by their policies on managing COVID. Not unreasonable at all. Some people won't have their usual Christmas breaks away - if that's you and you voted Leave, then you voted for this to happen.

I'm far more worried about the impact of Brexit in terms of food costs, supplies and logistics and all that fun stuff that's coming our way.

Camomila · 10/12/2020 12:26

Pooe DH might be getting Duolingo for his Christmas present!

Camomila · 10/12/2020 12:27

*poor

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 12:27

@FatGirlShrinking, as the PM for having his cake and eating it, we'll be ambitious for Britain, negotiate to keep the good (as if there could be anything good in such a flawed and doomed institution as the EU) and lose the bad. It's sad that so many don't believe in Britain, in Britain's greatness, the future so bright.

houseinthesnow · 10/12/2020 12:28

5,4,3,2,1 until the slumbering med countries realise what a catastrophe awaits them for the second summer in a row, and we see some hasty announcements being rushed out from Spain and the rest saying of course they are open for business! Will they be quick enough to stop the cascading cancellations for christmas though, that is the only question I have.....will you now risk it with covid as well? Thought not.

That is what is called shooting yourself in the foot!

I guess people will just book elsewhere for next summer.

Idiots.

IcedPurple · 10/12/2020 12:28

Opening up all their bars and restaurants too quickly for British tourists to get shitfaced in almost certainly played a significant part in Spain’s second wave.

Most of the major outbreaks in Spain occurred well away from the major holiday resorts, so almost certainly didn't have much to do with British (or German, or Dutch or Swedish) tourists.

FastMovingLuxuryGoods · 10/12/2020 12:29

Sorry @Zilla1, you are of course correct, I am just being daft aren't I?

I don't know how I could keep forgetting how very very special and important and different from all the other countries we are, we brave, buccaneering, brilliant English Brits.

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 12:29

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow, thank you. I cry too with all these captain hindsights, these moaning minnies who aren't ambitious for deal old Blighty. Who put the Great in Great Britain, I ask you? I hope no one dare imply it was anything to do with there already existing something called Breton so the Great was a descriptor of size and not fandangle brilliance.

wildbarnet · 10/12/2020 12:29

I have asked a few people if they would have voted different and they would have done

IcedPurple · 10/12/2020 12:31

@Changi

It's not all about holidays.

It's about work too. I'm always surprised at the number of people on here who think that the only reason people travel abroad and/or get on a plane is to go on holiday.

I don't think it is about work though? I think the restrictions only apply to holiday makers, and then only temporarily.
Ylvamoon · 10/12/2020 12:31

Well, Brexit means Brexit 🙄

Who would want to travel to those inconsiderate EU countries anyway?

Dreamprincess · 10/12/2020 12:33

I think I must be senile as I can remember enjoying holidays in France while growing up, and my honeymoon was in Tenerife in 1969. I have also travelled extensively to other countries, such as Pakistan, Egypt, the States etc. etc. without too much problem. Where there's a will, there's a way chaps! Or perhaps Mumsnetters are typically English i.e. we are only happy when we can complain and be miserable. You all remind me of Noel Coward's "There are bad times just around the corner...."

And yes I have relatives who live in Europe and they are welcome to visit anytime, once Covid is under control of course. Though I suspect that countries such as Spain and Portugal will be still welcoming the tourist pound as soon as possible.

@jessstan1

Does it matter? It's only important if you feel you need to go abroad next year.
I haven’t commented on here until now but some of us have extremely elderly and frail relatives who live in the E.U. (and always have done, as I have always lived here) and I don’t feel it’s unreasonable to feel the need to visit them before they pop their clogs not to put too fine a point on it.
houseinthesnow · 10/12/2020 12:35

Hilarious, this seriously made my day!!!!

The last time I checked holidaymakers had to PAY for trips to the EU, it was not a charity the last time I checked, taking tired travellers to resorts on the med. So I am assuming the tourism in the EU may as well shut up shop now indefinitely - what a total disaster after covid, as if they really needed this announcement to be made just before christmas!

Seriously you could not make this up!!

Is it supposed to some sort of the threat? Do you think someone in the EU brussels ivory tower forgot that there are beaches and vineyards in other parts of the world as well?

It is honestly heartbreaking to see the complete lack of logic in announcing this now - just before thousands of much needed tourists fly out for christmas and new year.
We have just cancelled our trip, and just so you know the hotel was very keen to reassure us that it did not apply to us or their country. Too late now though - another ill thought out EU ruling.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 10/12/2020 12:36

I saw that fucking idiot Boris standing in the stage in Europe with Ursula van Der Leyen and with his hands deep in his pockets last night. What a detestable buffoon he is.

houseinthesnow · 10/12/2020 12:39

I think it might be Ursula that has her hands in pockets actually.
Corruption charges aside.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/12/2020 12:41

Mum, he was probably trying to look intelligent😂.

Hard I’ll grant you.

Maerchentante · 10/12/2020 12:41

@Zilla1

I've seen the arrival of the Mercedes, VW and BMW limousines at Chancellor Merkel's. Rest assured, the German car manufacturers will tell Frau Merkel to give the UK everything we want who will tell the EU who will tell all the Nation States. Sort of like the cavalry. If the cavalry drive German Engineered cars. Does that make the UK like the homesteaders?
Sorry to burst your bubble, the UK is now a small fish to the German car industry.
Echobelly · 10/12/2020 12:45

Bit misleading - due to Brexit Brits can't enter until the COVID situation improves, I'm sure we will be allowed in by summer. It still shows how shit Brexit is though.
