Bad news for anyone who was hoping to get away next year :(

No @Welcometonowhere, they are doing it because it’s in their interest. The fact that it’s not in the Interest if the Uk isn’t important to them anymore"
Because the uk isn’t in the club.

You know a bit like when you are going to the gym, pay your membership and thanks to the classes etc.. you are in great shape and are losing weight.
But the day you decide to cancel your membership and stop paying the fees, you start putting weight on. But it’s nothing to do with the gym. Because you are not a member.

@istherelifeafter40, Lovely of you and PPs to say but when we've got a gifted communicator like Boris at the helm, steering the ship to the safe port of an Australian Deal, I doubt I could add anything. It will be as clear as the daylight of a new dawn of another age of greatness.

Some misguided people might say 'no deal' was always the plan. How foolish they must feel now we are heading towards an Australian deal. Some might say the spiteful EU have shot themselves in the foot. More fool them.

MsSafina · 10/12/2020 22:16

They now have two member states, Poland and Hungary, which are effectively dictatorships and in direct defiance of EU human rights laws.

Now that Trump is gone I'm actually ppl think I'm american instead of hungarian :(
TheSunIsStillShining · 10/12/2020 22:47

@MsSafina
the gist of these countries is that they need EU money to line their pockets. So they sit down to the dinner table. Half way through they shit on the table and point at everyone else that it was them doing it or "they made me do it". One that's settled they start throwing said feces around and demand to be given more money.

MsSafina · 10/12/2020 22:49

They have a damp cheek talking of "level playing fields" when they have two rogue states in receipt of substantial funds.

MsSafina · 10/12/2020 22:50

Meant to say damn not damp.Grin

AuldAlliance · 10/12/2020 22:54

I don't want to think about Orban's damp cheek, thanks all the same.

Does it really cost £150 to get a PCR test in the UK?
It's free in the EU country where I live, covered by SS contributions.
Sovereignty, innit...

TheSunIsStillShining · 10/12/2020 23:14

It's quite expensive in Hungary as well if you are not doing it because you have symptoms.
In the UK you get a free one if you have symptoms as well. It only cost money if you want to do it for "fun". And even then you can say you have a cough, etc...

TheSunIsStillShining · 10/12/2020 23:17

I hate to say it but you are right. The difference is that they are part of the club and thus have some level of immunity from retaliation, whilst someone who is out has a different set of rules applied to them. Which is fair enough. Uk wanted to leave.... on the damp cheeks... just look up Szajer and Belgian gay party. IT was all over the news last week :) Thank god we don't have video footage.

I think the EU would need to be way harsher on both HU and PL. I don't really get why they aren't. There must be a good reason, I just can't see it. Especially how we know that Orban is playing for both sides: EU and Putin.

lalafafa · 10/12/2020 23:23

Southern Europe are always skint and need our cash.

Girlyracer · 10/12/2020 23:28

That's at least the Greek and Spanish tourist industry stuffed then isn't it. They might have something to say about that.....Oh well, longer plane ride to sunshine won't bother me.

veeeeh · 10/12/2020 23:29

Biden put the wind up the UK sails for sure, and changed the bravado of the Boris/Trump double jobbie.

LOL. Well that's what I think anyway. So we shall see what happens. It's a different playing field now, not level between UK and US anymore, whatever about EU/UK.

Honestly this saga is unreal.

You will not be stopped from visiting anywhere in EU as a third country. Just need a visa. Come on over to Spain and wherever in the EU, and just queue in the non EU line. You will be as welcome as any other non EU country.
Girlyracer · 10/12/2020 23:39

I'll be glad to go in the non EU line, they're always bloody shorter than the EU one SmileNever go to Europe or any other country for longer than 3 months anyway, so these extra restrictions are no skin off my nose.

lurker101 · 11/12/2020 00:25

@Girlyracer probably only shorter because you’re arriving in an EU country, so more likely to have EU citizens on the flight...... when a lot of British people are non-EU citizens the queues are likely to “even up”

notangelinajolie · 11/12/2020 01:09

No one has travelled anywhere for pretty much the whole of 2020 so what is so urgent that you have to travel on January 1st?

There were 1.8 million ppl going through heathrow in August. Most of them going on "much needed" hols. just sayin'
IFuckLobstersForMoney · 11/12/2020 01:17

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

I don’t. I think Europe hates Britain at the moment. I know l do and l’m British.
This.
ilovesooty · 11/12/2020 02:44

@QueenOfTheDoubleWide

It's just the usual Guardian scare-mongering about Brexit. The EU is not foolish enough to decimate its tourism industry
Anyone would think that other news outlets hadn't published similar information. Was the Financial Times "scaremongering" as well? Hmm

Citation if possible please.

FWIW the August figure I've seen quoted in several sources is closer to 1.4 million, and I've yet to see a breakdown of passengers going on holidays vs. those travelling on business and connecting traffic.

Zilla1 · 11/12/2020 08:08

Some good news heard from a friend of a friend. The EU negotiators were heard discussing whether 'you can argue with stupid?'. I think they're being a little hard on themselves but if they're beginning to recognise their own shortcomings, hopefully they'll start to listen to what we're telling them and give the UK what it wants. It will save the German car manufacturers their drive to Berlin to tell Frau Merkel she needs to tell the EU to give the UK what it wants. I'm a bit surprised that drive has taken so long. Does anyone know if there's been snow on the Autobahn?

notevenat20 · 11/12/2020 08:20

I am impressed by the variety of views on this thread. I think at least one person mentioned an Australia style deal. This expression is of course an hilarious euphemism for no deal at all and is somewhat unfair on the Australians who have trade deals with all their major trading partners.

I wonder what we could start calling other national disasters. Covid a la francaise? A US style leave agreement (war)? Any others?
