Bad news for anyone who was hoping to get away next year :(

@LizzieSiddal

My neighbour has a house in France, voted Brexit as there are 'too many polish people in this country' and is now frothing because she will need 4 months notice with the vet, in order to take her dog with her, to France.

@cantdothisnow1, or if they're studying in Exeter, for example, they could have a year in Manchester, learn whatever language they speak up North and encourage patriotic solidarity across the UK. We'd need a new name (vaguely recall some connection between Eramus and UK but even so), something patriotic, Churchill, perhaps?

countrygirl99 · 10/12/2020 15:15

Anyone would think Spain etc didn't get tourists from anywhere other than Britain. Where are the Prosecco manufacturers and German car companies who were meant to stamp their feet and insist we get a good deal?

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 15:22

@countrygirl99, the German car manufacturers will be driving to see Frau Merkel (and the wine producers going to their countries' leaders) as we speak, probably.

LizzieSiddal · 10/12/2020 15:22

Thanks for the link notimagain I will forward it to my neighbourGrin

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 15:33

Don't worry. Without British tourists, Europe will be ruined. The EU will fail even more quickly than five years. Don't forget they don't even have the British Royal Family so tourists won't want to go to France or Spain anyway. When was the last time you heard anyone rave about trooping the colour in Spain. Or waving from the balcony in France because a darling little baby has been born. It won't be 'Non, Je Ne Regret Rien' by Macron and Merkel.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/12/2020 15:35

There doesn't seem to be a lot of hope on this thread that the government will have got the plague filled UK under control by Easter/Summer

Remembering the old saying about lies, damned lies and statistics, they'll no doubt lie again if it isn't - this time to insist folk have died of something other than Covid (which an unknown number probably have)

Given the deceits we've seen already, is there anyone left who takes our government's narrative at face value any more?

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 15:36

Now we have sovereignty. And fish. It will be all 'Je T'Aime' like Ursula was with out beloved PM yesterday., And Today. And Tomorrow.

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 15:42

If the spiteful EU carry on punishing the UK for understandably regaining sovereignty. And fish. the chants will grow across our sceptred isle for 'refund, refund, refund'. We've spent decades paying into this club. And never getting a single penny back. Being the only member who followed the rules. Being the only non-corrupt member.

It's like paying for all the cost of a daughter's wedding because it's traditional. Then paying half the cost of a son's wedding because it's fair.

The chant will echo that not only will we get £350m a week going forward but we'll get £350m for every week we were a member. and the bus too.

This article was published in Feb 2020, so pre-Covid - nevertheless;

"Portugal has announced plans to open separate customs lanes for British tourists at its airports after the UK leaves the European Union, as it seeks to prevent a post-Brexit slump in tourism revenues."

"Portugal’s Prime Minister Antonio Costa said the new lanes would be opened at Faro airport in the Algarve and Funchal airport on the island of Madeira which both popular destinations for British holidaymakers."

"Holidaymakers from Britain are important to Portugal as they are the biggest group of tourists to the country."

Anyone would think Spain etc didn't get tourists from anywhere other than Britain.

Obviously they do, but Britain is by far the biggest single tourist market for Spain. Were British tourists to be prevented from going there long-term - highly unlikely - that would be a huge blow to the Spanish tourist industry.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/12/2020 15:50

Britain is by far the biggest single tourist market for Spain

That makes sense when you consider the state of some of their resorts

I didn't know we were the biggest market for them though - or that it was the same for Portugal

The statistics are pretty easy to check. You can find them on Wiki. Britain is the biggest market, folowed at some distance by Germany.

@whenwillthemadnessend

This won't happen as if the European people are going to want to loose our cash It's just headlines. We will get a exemption like Australia.

It's just vivid that's the issue right now.

Well we’ll have to get outnumber down like Australia then That’s several wo ANY covid cases.

I think we are very far away from that. And won’t be there in the summer either

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 15:55

@Puzzledandpissedoff, thank you. If you and all the right-thinking 52% all pull together, we'll convince the Captain Hindsight 48% they were wrong. But we won't laud it over them. Oh no, they are welcome to join us in Club Brexit. Then Club Sovereignty. Then Club Fish.

Club Brexit. Drinks are free. Fun and sunshine, there's enough for everyone. (though no more freeloaders, why do you think we wanted to stop the wrong sort of free movement? Not the free movement of second home owners and puppies, just the free movement of benefit-claiming workers).

giantangryrooster · 10/12/2020 15:56

Could you please remember that it wasn't the EU countries who told you to sod off, but you who voted out? You who didn't want to be part of the community.

I'm sure countries relying heavily on British tourists are devastated.

And due to covid even internally in the EU free movement is so so with tests and quarantines required.

TonMoulin · 10/12/2020 15:56

@IcedPurple no one is talking about stopping British to spend their money in the eu long term

It’s about covid. And I’m not sure Spain wants tourists that will bring more covid cases (which was the case this summer)

TheSunIsStillShining · 10/12/2020 15:56

Fun and sunshine, there's enough for everyone
and now this song will play in my head for days :) Not sure I like you for it.

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 16:00

@giantangryrooster, but the EU is being spiteful for holding the UK telling them to 'sod off' against us. They should have predicted we'd get to no deal, sorry Australian deal at a late stage then proactively changed the thousands of EU laws and systems to stop the rightful Brexit having any adverse effects on hardworking British folk. IT's like the EU is just looking out for itself. And punishing us. And after us paying into the club for decades. Just wrong.

Yes, I know it's about Covid.

As for your other point, as I said above, the major outbreaks in Spain have mostly been well away from the major tourist destinations, so there's little evidence that tourism - what little tourism there was this year - played a major role. Worth pointing out that while Spain was very strict in some regards, its rules on gatherings were much more lax than in many parts of Europe.
