Bad news for anyone who was hoping to get away next year :(

And Article 50 absolutely needed to have been triggered ASAP. You can't honestly expect to have had a solution to the supposed tensions between the Single Market and buccaneering deals worked out before the Referendum (which should be honoured, let's not forget) then to have planned negotiations and finalised a deal then to have given businesses and people enough time to have planned and prepared. Let's not forget the tricksy EU should have prepared for no deal, sorry Australian deal and unilaterally changed their laws and systems and what not to not punish Great Britain. They're just trying to punish us. And after having paid into the club for decades. Decades I tell you. We'll show them. The EU is doomed. It won't last five years. Probably.

cantdothisnow1 · 10/12/2020 14:29

When my daughter was 2 she had sepsis when we were holiday in Europe, we had travel insurance but there was no need to use it, emergency care was quick and immediate and thankfully she recovered quickly with no need for repatriation.

What struck me about it, as compared to being in the US for example was that there was no need to worry about insurers disputing the claim, it was seemless at the flash of the EHIC.

Of course insurance premiums will rise as a result of us losing this 'benefit' of being part of the club. The fact that the EHIC doesn't cover repatriation is irrelevant to the fact that we are losing something of great value.

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 14:36

@LizzieSiddal, but will no one think about the puppies (dog sad face photo). That's not the kind of free movement we wanted to stop. Perhaps dogs could join that convoy on 01/01/2021 to demand entry?

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 14:38

@cantdothisnow1, details, details. That could have some moaning minnie-esque theoretical value, I suppose, but it's infinitesimal compared with the infinite value of sovereignty. And fish.

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 14:43

@cantdothisnow1, sorry, forgot to add that I hope your DD made a full recovery.

TonMoulin · 10/12/2020 14:45

@BigFatLiar yes they are eu citizens just like I am.
Which doesnt change anything because I live in the U.K. and that’s the important part in the movement of people with covid.
(Because surprise surprise, covid doesn’t behave differently depending on your citizenship)

secretlyhappy · 10/12/2020 14:47

I assume I can go and visit my home country in EU and come back because I have settled status and EU passport.

Chloemol · 10/12/2020 14:49

It’s to do with COVID, we already have European countries on the list coming into us

We can just do the same, and seeing COVID rates abroad I think that would be a good idea

cantdothisnow1 · 10/12/2020 14:51
@cantdothisnow1, sorry, forgot to add that I hope your DD made a full recovery.
Yes she's fine now thanks.

The healthcare she received in Sweden was fantastic.

As it was in France, for me, when I studied under the Erasmus scheme, pity she won't get to do that. But hey ho, at least we've got our sovereignty to look forward to!

megletthesecond · 10/12/2020 14:54

I was feeling fed up today but lisalees post gave me a laugh.

ArrowsOfMistletoe · 10/12/2020 14:55

Zilla1 I am loving your work on this thread. Genius.

whenwillthemadnessend · 10/12/2020 14:56

This won't happen as if the European people are going to want to loose our cash It's just headlines. We will get a exemption like Australia.

It's just vivid that's the issue right now.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/12/2020 14:56

Interesting article on relying on EHICs when travelling in europe (not that we may be able to much longer)
conversation.which.co.uk/travel-leisure/dont-rely-on-ehic-when-travelling-to-europe/

Just another example of some nations - in this case Spain - doing what the hell they want, "rules" or not

TheRealJeanLouise · 10/12/2020 14:57

Totally sentimental but I just have to get it off my chest....

Some of my best ever memories of being a teen and young adult were of being able to hop in and out of Europe whenever I chose to. I’m absolutely heartbroken my children won’t have the same experience.

Clavinova · 10/12/2020 14:57

My neighbour has a house in France, voted Brexit as there are 'too many polish people in this country' and is now frothing because she will need 4 months notice with the vet, in order to take her dog with her, to France.

I think the 4 months notice relates to the first trip abroad;

"Before your dog, cat or ferret can travel to the EU for the first time after 1 January 2021, you’ll need to take the following steps..."

"As long as you keep your pet’s rabies vaccinations up to date, you will not need to get repeat blood tests for repeat trips to the EU."

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 14:59

@cantdothisnow1, glad to hear about your DD. Haven't you heard the great news about Erasmus? The UK will either pay to rejoin or ay even build a programme of our own that will be Britsh. And better. I don't know if it will be better because it will allow educational opportunities at other locations within Great Britain or buccaneering opportunities to Australia. Either way, onwards and upwards.

QueenOfTheDoubleWide · 10/12/2020 14:59

It's just the usual Guardian scare-mongering about Brexit. The EU is not foolish enough to decimate its tourism industry

Pipandmum · 10/12/2020 15:01

They will work it out. Otherwise tourism will collapse in several countries. But I'm still going to get Irish passports for my family (benefit of Irish mother).

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 15:02

@ArrowsOfMistletoe, thank you. Someone has to be patriotic and stand up for Britain. And Brexit. And England. All these Captain Hindsights, saying 'you don't want to do it like that' like some Harry Enfield comedy character. Don't get me started on all these louvres who don't love their country. If you asked Alan Partridge, I expect he'd appreciate Brexit for all the opportunities it will bring East Anglia.

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 15:04

@TheRealJeanLouise, but don't forget they'll be able to hop to Australia. St Helena. Ascension. The Falklands. The opportunities will be endless, well distant anyway.

notimagain · 10/12/2020 15:05

It's just the usual Guardian scare-mongering about Brexit. The EU is not foolish enough to decimate its tourism industry

FWIW the FT woke up and started the "scare-mongering"/broke the story a day or two before the Guardian.

As I mentioned upthread it won't just be the EU's tourist/travel industry that could be decimated, this ban will have implications for the travel industry at the UK end if it continues well into the Spring and Summer..

We'd better hope that the Covid situation in the UK improves to the point that the restriction on UK nationals entering the EU can be removed.

cantdothisnow1 · 10/12/2020 15:06

Wow Zilla , this government is truly amazing. Perhaps she will be able to learn to speak a European language in Australia, I mean, I hadn't thought of that.
What a great idea!

TheRealJeanLouise · 10/12/2020 15:08

I never thought of that @Zilla1. Can’t wait to let them know that when they want to eat gelato outside the coliseum or ski in the Alps. Wink

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 15:08

@notimagain, don't forget you don't add credibility to your story by bringing in leftie rags like the FT. Now if you'd said the Daily Mail, Telegraph or Spectator then you'd bring some authority to the discussion.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/12/2020 15:09

There doesn't seem to be a lot of hope on this thread that the government will have got the plague filled UK under control by Easter/Summer. There's no need for the Spanish tourist industry to be affected if we can get Covid sorted out.
