Bad news for anyone who was hoping to get away next year :(

@52andblue, hope things get better personally soon.

Obviously things couldn't get better nationally with sovereignty, fish, Australian deals and suchlike.

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 13:22

Did I see an announcement Ursula wanted more Boris until Sunday? Has she'd found his muscular, tousled-haired charisma irresistible?

HmmSureJan · 10/12/2020 13:22

This isn't even a story. Anyone with any common sense would know this was going to happen. It's the MSM yet again trying to get everyone frothing and it worked.

Unsure33 · 10/12/2020 13:23

posters are implying that all EU country citizens will be able to travel freely without covid tests between EU countries . And those outside the EU will be banned

well that's not entirely accurate is it ?

Depending on covid rates/spikes / levels each country can make their own decisions , which seems logical to me ?

of course Brexit is going to make a difference to travel and that works both ways - that was always the case - its nothing new ?

And the covid test cost will be the same from whichever country you are from . Hopefully it will come down as new tests are developed . there are quick ones for about £15.00 each coming out .

And BTW I did not vote for Brexit . But we are where we are .
Life will change - but it would of because of covid as well .

Unsure33 · 10/12/2020 13:26

@HmmSureJan

I totally agree . MSM have made this country more divided than it has ever been and personally I am fed up with their scaremongering headlines .
Thank god we have different attitudes during the war .

tinselfest · 10/12/2020 13:26

Well... could be means just that.

And it only relates to holidaymakers and the pandemic, which to be honest, will affect everyone's travel all over the world.

So the attention-grabbing title of your thread is somewhat misleading isn't it?

EscapedfromGN · 10/12/2020 13:27

@SchadenfreudePersonified

Those Blue Passports are really going to come into their ow.
If you run out off bog roll you can wipe you bum with it. Wipe it off and detox it and it's reusable. Doesn't clog the drains and good for the planet.

Don't worry folks we do make loo roll in the UK.

I think it was the well fitting suit.
grapewine · 10/12/2020 13:27

It isn't a threat, it isn't spite. It is simply that by leaving the EU the UK will be subject to the same rules that apply to all of the other countries which are not members of the EU.

It's baffling why this is so difficult to understand. EU members get benefits, non-members do not. You would think it was fairly simple to grasp.

schnubbins · 10/12/2020 13:28

The ban on travel from outside the EU has been in place since before the summer and put in place to restrict the spread of Covid .I am living in Germany and we are not allowed to travel even within Germany at present .All tourism has been banned .Hotels are not allowed to accept tourist , German or otherwise Travel is only allowed for business purposes. The ski resorts are closed until after Christmas and there are now talks of a full lockdown from December 25th.From January 1st The Uk is no longer part of the EU so the same rules will apply as do to other non EU members but these rules are not new .Those headlines are totally misleading but that is not new either is it?

He might be charismatic, but that poor woman, what's even worse she has to listen to him, too Grin.

houseinthesnow · 10/12/2020 13:30

And to think the BBC pledged to stop being so political......

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 13:35

@RafaIsTheKingOfClay, @giantangryrooster, she's only human after all. And a woman. Probably couldn't help herself. Have just thought - UK brexit voters = 52%. UK % of population are female = 52% probably. Add in Farage and Rees Mogg and it's clear, Boris' compelling charisma won it.

I beg to differ. The difference is that, even if movement of people was allowed/ok in other tu countries, Britain will still not be allowed in until the EU has decided to allow people from third countries in. If the current rule stays (which is likely), this means people will bit be able to go to France/Germany/Spain even after those countries have sort of gone back to normal. Like it was last summer.

That’s very different fur someone like me whose parents live in France. If needed, I could have still just pop in a plane to see them (single child, no other family and elderly patents). After the 1st January I won’t.

EscapedfromGN · 10/12/2020 13:38

@Belladonna12

This is due to Covid. It means that British people will not be able to go on holiday in the EU and come back with Covid in January like they did in the summer. What's the downside?
True and Spanish football supporters won't be able to come. Cheltenham will be a problem still. We will have to put Cheltenham into tier 3++ for a few days around St Patrick's Day.
Inthemuckheap · 10/12/2020 13:38

Crying over spilt milk comes to mind. Tough for those of us who voted against Brexit.

Thank goodness for dual nationality is all I can say. See ya losers! (when we're allowed to travel again of course Wink

Clavinova · 10/12/2020 13:40

TonMoulin
Except the person in question doesn't have complex medical needs. This is someone in remission with no treatment who happened to have had cancer 5 years before.
But you know that’s ok. The people (like @Clavinova) who have enough money won’t have an issue with it. It’s those plebs that dare going away when they can’t spare £800

How old is the person in question? In the age group more likely to suffer from a heart attack, stroke, broken hip, pneumonia? Age has a huge bearing on the cost of travel insurance. I wouldn't want to be stuck in an EU hospital for weeks/months on end because medical repatriation costs up to £25,000 and I didn't pay for travel insurance. I don't think EHIC cards are valid on European cruise ships either.

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 13:44

@Inthemuckheap, don't worry, I expect the sovereign nation will continue to love its dual passport holders equally as much as it does the millions of ex-pats currently living in the EU.

notimagain · 10/12/2020 13:51

Come the summer, Greece, Spain, Portugal will want British tourism.

True, as will British companies in areas such the travel industry (holiday companies, airlines, airports, etc).

BungleandGeorge · 10/12/2020 13:52

Some insurers give you a very high quote because they don’t want to insure you. Without knowing a specific risk assessment it is possible to get worldwide travel insurance for people in remission for cheaper than that. There may be some negotiation as obviously the loss of the reciprocal agreement will affect those from the EU coming here aswell. A lot of Europe don’t provide the comprehensive free service that we do, you often end up paying privately for GP visits and medicines anyway, and to get a nicer hospital bed etc.

stickygotstuck · 10/12/2020 14:14

Seriously, I cannot get my head round the amount of people here thinking this is a 'new ruling' motivated by 'spite' on the part of the EU.

If the EU was, say, BT and you cancel your package from 1st January, you know you won't have a phone line from 1 January onwards. Well, you do, don't you?? It really is not that hard to understand.

Not only that, you would have got a backup to kickstart on or before the 1st of Jan. Even if it's a pay-as-you-go cheapo phone.

But of course, that's too much to expect from this government.

BigFatLiar · 10/12/2020 14:15

That’s very different fur someone like me whose parents live in France. If needed, I could have still just pop in a plane to see them (single child, no other family and elderly patents). After the 1st January I won’t.

I think it depends on whether your parents are EU citizens or not. If they are you may still be allowed to visit.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/12/2020 14:19

Except the person in question does t have complex medical needs. This is someone in remission with no treatment who happened to have had cancer 5 years before

Fair enough, though I believe some insurers disregard anything older than 5 years? In the end I guess it's down to what personal risk folk are prepared to take, and if I couldn't afford proper insurance I wouldn't travel - simple as that

As said I completely agree that rules shouldn't be bent for just one country, whether in the EU or not, but the fact remains that they are bent all the time. Doesn't make it right of course, but it underlines that the EU and the nations within it twist and turn according to what suits

Oh, and please let's not gloat too much over how our ghastly PM's being treated by Ursula ... not with the stink of corruption that's hanging over her too

Zilla1 · 10/12/2020 14:20

What do the Captains Hindsight and moaning minis expect from our great countries great leaders? You can't realistically to have expected them to have dotted all the Is and crossed every single T when having to negotiate with the spiteful EU? Business, importers and the like will be able to make minor tweaks to their computer wiz waws by twiddling their knobs in no more than a day. Otherwise, they must be just trying to sabotage this great project and dishonour the referendum result.

LizzieSiddal · 10/12/2020 14:23

This will be the first of hundreds of 'little' inconveniences which will become apparent from 1st January. Of course Brexiteers have had over 4 years to realise they have been monumentally lied to, but they still haven't got it. They will only understand when they are faced with the facts. I'm very much looking forward to watching this after years of being called a Remoaner!

My neighbour has a house in France, voted Brexit as there are 'too many polish people in this country' and is now frothing because she will need 4 months notice with the vet, in order to take her dog with her, to France. God knows what she'll do when she hears todays news!
