What’s going to happen next? Cases rising?

The Wales lockdown hasn’t worked and it looks like the England one has only had very short term effects. Schools and unis still open and a lot of the public just aren’t following the rules now, it’s cold and wet so meeting outdoors isn’t going to happen so people are going inside. MPs don’t want harsher restrictions in their areas. So what will happen? Is it time just to end most restrictions seeing as they aren’t being followed anyway? Or will they try and impose another lockdown? Close the schools?

@Unsure33

So *@Pepperama*. Wants strict fast total lockdown

@AcornAutumn

Wants no lockdown at all .

Just about sums up the problem .

I don’t want total lockdown

Nor do whatever you want

So I guess limp on in semi restriction with most open and get to next phase

timeforanewstart · 07/12/2020 21:23

Where have you seem cases in england are rising ?

Unsure33 · 07/12/2020 21:23

@DivGirl

Not just “we”

You do realise that a lot of Europe had stricter lockdowns than us ?

In Italy you had to have a certificate to leave the house .

And they still have problems looming now .

These were not just our government decisions?
In Spain they actually abandoned some care homes.

Americas cases and deaths are soaring at the moment . Totally out of control .New York had roughly the same population of London and 10 x more deaths .

Lay the blame on the virus .

Trickyboy · 07/12/2020 21:24

Unsure33 that's exactly it..

Bizarrely the anti - lockdowners are the ones spreading it..

The stay at homes are preventing it..

Meanwhile the anti lockdowners are screaming about the restrictions..

You really can't argue with the lack of brain cells... they will NEVER get it... yes I am going to say it ... just too fucking stupid to work out what a VIRAL INFECTION means.

cantkeepawayforever · 07/12/2020 21:24

Close the schools

The vast majority of schools have already been partially closed at at least one point this term - so education isn't exactly running well, is it?

Worse, it's increasingly because of lack of staff, who have caught Covid...in school. From children.

Unsure33 · 07/12/2020 21:25

@MarshaBradyo

I think that is what they are trying .

Focus testing and shutdown in the areas with the highest cases , it seems to have worked in Liverpool . It takes an effort from the local population as well .

Lovemusic33 · 07/12/2020 21:26

@veeeeh

Covid and Brexit. The perfect storm.
This.. I have a feeling January will be worse than anything we have seen in 2020, numbers of covid cases will be huge along with flu season and then we have the issues of a no deal brexit, possible food shortages which could spur more panic buying.

Covid is far from over and the vaccination for those having it from tomorrow won’t even be effective until a month after the 2nd dose? To get as many people as possible vaccinated (those who agree to it) is going to take months.

wonderstuff · 07/12/2020 21:27

I think January will be grim. English cases seem on a downward trend in most areas, I hope people don't go mad at Christmas, but I imagine there will be an increase in hospitalizations mid to late January.
Vaccine roll out should start to take effect by March/April.
I'm really hoping life will get back to normal by late spring.

Unsure33 · 07/12/2020 21:27

@cantkeepawayforever
But people were. Begging for schools to be open for the sake of the mental health of the children .

Is difficult .

Look at the graphs this week, they dipped last week then flattened off/slight rise so far this week.

@AcornAutumn But no-one needed to go to Oxford st. Not everyone will take the children on trips if the school close early. A lot of people will be sensible. But I appreciate it is much more difficult if you are in a flat. no garden etc
Did you mean to be patronising ?

And guess where the currently licensed vaccine comes from ...Europe. With which we won't have a trade deal. Great.

Yes, of course.

Mental health of children vs physical health of teachers and of those vulnerable people who live in families with school-going children.

No PPE for school staff, no effective infection control (lots of smoke and mirrors, but in fact 'wash your hands' is as good as it gets).

If people REALLY cared about the mental health of children, they would give schools every possible facility to keep teachers - and pupils - healthy, in school and virus free. The fact that there is NOTHING indicates just how much people really care.

Suzi888 · 07/12/2020 21:33

A further lockdown from the end of December.

wizzbangfizz · 07/12/2020 21:34

I don't agree with the lockdown approach - but I would be very aggrieved to be called an "antilockdowner". I wont be seeing friends and family this Christmas, I've not and nor will be rushing out to the shops, I wear a mask, only one of us from the household goes to the supermarket - I follow the rules.

I want this to be over as much as anyone but don't think that what we are doing at the moment is working.

FreekStar · 07/12/2020 21:39

How on earth can cases in London be lower than Yorkshire? We have been in some form of lockdown in my authority since July! We are now in tier 3 with no sign of restrictions being lifted in the foreseeable future. We haven't been able to meet friends or family anywhere except the beach/woods/park since July. Yet in London there can be crowds outside city centre bars, throngs shopping on regent street, packed tubes, bars and restaurants open, etc.etc. but cases stay lower? It's lies! I don't believe it! The figures are surely skewed to favour the south!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 07/12/2020 21:40

Enough immunity from the first wave to make a difference?

No. I think many Londoners had it from November onwards and it peaked before March.

There’s a few studies saying London, New York and Delhi probably hit herd immunity ages ago.

Pomegranatespompom · 07/12/2020 21:41

@cantkeepawayforever I don't think that's true for many. I've offered to help with school funds for ppe/cleaning. I absolutely agree you should be protected.

AcornAutumn · 07/12/2020 21:42

All the Londoners I know were just living normally in that time. I was at the theatre two days before it shut down. Theatre was full but bars were pretty empty after because the fear was starting. So I reckon we’ve lived with it for ages.

cantkeepawayforever · 07/12/2020 21:43

Sorry Pomegranate, I feel I am taking my frustrations out on those who are really not to blame. It's the Government's fault, of course, not parents'. Apologies.

MarshaBradyo · 07/12/2020 21:43

London will probably have some immunity (not herd) but will slow transmission down.

Pomegranatespompom · 07/12/2020 21:44

no need to apologise @cantkeepawayforever it's stressful and miserable.

No, I genuinely can’t see why you can’t see this is what happens with lockdowns. It’s not unpredictable behaviour.

I dint understand this

You don’t think lockdown is the right approach

Doesn’t that make you anti lockdown?

I am anti lockdown but I follow the law. One thing has nothing to do with the other. No one wants a fine even if they can afford it. Except maybe Rita Ora!
