I keep seeing anti vaccine threads. False info about immunity passports and that the vaccine is going to be compulsory.

It is not going to be compulsory.

Health passports are going to be ridiculously hard to implement they can’t even manage track and trace fgs.

There is always a chance that some similar very rare nasty side-effect could emerge here. (Probably not narcolepsy, though, as that specific one seems to have been caused by the flu virus itself that was being used in the vaccines.) It's very unlikely, less likely because this has gone through full trials (unlike Pandemrix), and because the trials are huge, and because there's been no suggestion of any such issue so far in the testing - so any chance seems really very low. But if something like that did happen, we wouldn't be more likely to spot it by waiting longer with the existing trials. We would only be more likely to spot it by closely monitor possible side-effects in the people who'd had the vaccine, once it starts getting rolled out in large numbers. Which is what's going to happen

Brilliant, thank you for providing that information, it’s helpful.
And that’s all people are looking for... information. That’s why people post with questions and concerns. Your comprehensive answer has helped me... surely better to signpost people to information like that, rather than just call them ‘anti vaxxers’?

I am not anti-vax by any means (I have a genetic condition which means I can’t have some vaccines so I am incredibly grateful for herd immunity!) but Pfizer have been involved in many high profile scandals (for which they have been fined, so not conspiracy theories) including bribing government in multiple countries, marketing claims that turned out not to be true and improper clinical trials (e.g. testing drugs on children in Nigeria). They also received the largest ever fine for “misbranding” one of their products. I know there are no good Pharma companies but Pfizer seem to really try to be the bag guy.

The UK was one of the first countries to start prescribing thalidomide (after Germany where it was created). Sometimes a little caution is not a bad thing.

Russellbrandshair · 02/12/2020 21:51

Matt Hancock refused to rule out making the vaccine mandatory on national tv so I’m not sure why you seem so shocked people are concerned by it?

As someone with a history of life threatening vaccine reactions who now never has a vaccine it concerns me. A lot.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 02/12/2020 21:54

It only affected about 1 in 50,000 people

What the death rate of covid in similar terms? (Remembering that initially at least it's the elderly and. those with co-morbidities of any age who will get the vaccine, plus front line HCPs and care staff, and that is where nearly all deaths occur). Plus rates of major complications (like stroke) from the disease.

It sometimes seems that the risk of the disease is not given fair hearing in juxtaposition to the risks of vaccine

pastandpresent · 02/12/2020 21:55

The way I see it, there are people who are willing to take risks for greater good to participate on trials so we have these vaccines available to people so quickly. I am willing to take risks too, when I was offered one.
If people are afraid, there are choice not to get it. So, the people who are trying to scare people not to get them so they can feel like majority are doing themselves an opposite favour. If many people decided not to take it, then this restrictions will stay longer. Why do they?

canigooutyet · 02/12/2020 21:57

The unauthorized clinical in Nigera was called Trovan

canigooutyet · 02/12/2020 21:58

Who is trying to scare anyone?

pastandpresent · 02/12/2020 22:01

People deliberately starting many scaremongering thread.

Can you link to some? Genuinely interested, as I haven’t seen any threads deliberately trying to scare people about the vaccine.
Russellbrandshair · 02/12/2020 22:04

@canigooutyet

Apparently, questioning the safety or legitimacy of injecting something into your body is “scaremongering”. Who knew that asking sensible and relevant questions about the safety and risk and long term side effects of a brand new vaccine was “scare mongering”! Weird, because I thought we were all supposed to make educated choices, and take responsibility for educating ourselves about our health and well-being, read patient info leaflets which by law have to list possible side effects etc I had no idea that was tin foil hat territory and what we are actually meant to do is blindly inject ourselves with anything we are told to like the good lil sheep we are 🐑 and we cannot ever question if a medical intervention is safe or not!!
pontypridd · 02/12/2020 22:05

Did you have a partcular vaccine, with a late-emerging side effect, in mind?

No. But if a vaccine affects the immune system in a particular way. Say it triggers or kick starts an autoimmune response - that might not be apparent for a while.

QueenBlueberries · 02/12/2020 22:05

How long did it take for someone to bring up Thalidomide? Kinda proves the point.

canigooutyet · 02/12/2020 22:12

It's madness RussellBrand.
Although you forgot that even when we do go and read we are all too stupid to understand.

Right? Lol Why do drug patient information leaflets even bother to list potential side effects at all if we aren’t supposed to know about them, shouldn’t read them and are all too stupid to take the information in?!
musicalfrog · 02/12/2020 22:20

People asking questions is fine. People not accepting perfectly legitimate answers to those questions - you know, the ones who deliberately ignore the answers - they are the ones that really piss me off. That's when you know there is an ulterior motive at play.

QueenBlueberries · 02/12/2020 22:22

Food doesn’t have side effects, rightiho. Obesity anyone?

Well no but to be fair, I’m not going to accept the word of a random, non medically trained internet person telling me the vaccine is “totes fine!”.

Which is exactly why the people I know say they won’t be having it until they have seen long term evidence of its proven safety in legitimate medical journals.

Tr1skel1on · 02/12/2020 22:28

You know what. I work in a school. I'd bloody love to have the vaccine but I'm bottom of the list according to the govt.

I'd be delighted if one of the anti vaxxers / conspiracy theorists sat safely at home whining about having a vaccine would give me their dose. I'd be really grateful.

MarshaBradyo · 02/12/2020 22:29

Often this is followed by posters proclaiming legit answers with nothing to back up the answers when other legit sources contradict what they are saying.

@QueenBlueberries

Food - especially refined sugar and saturated fat is incredibly bad for you and alcohol is basically a toxic poison that causes cell mutation and DNA damage. Yet as far as I’m aware, the government aren’t talking about making the consumption of wine, sugar and lard mandatory and THAT is the difference here. Although having typed that out, it sounds kind of nice if they were 😆
musicalfrog · 02/12/2020 22:31

Oh fgs! 🤦🏻‍♀️😆

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 02/12/2020 22:31

Bring sceptical about one specific new vaccine developed under very unusual circumstances doesn't make an individual an anti vaxxer.

An anti vaxxer is opposed to all vaccinations.

Someone who has, and gives their children, all childhood vaccines except chicken pox isn't an ant vaxxer.

Someone who pays for separate measles, mumps and rubella vaccines in a timely faahion instead of the mmr isn't an antivaxxer.

Their concerns may be misplaced, but someone who choses to take up most but not all vaccines offered is not an antivaxxer, and calling peopple names (especially inaccurate ones) doesn't convince anyone to change their mind about anything.

Russellbrandshair · 02/12/2020 22:31

No idea. But informed consent is the pinnacle of medical care and the second you start to breach that you are on a very slippery slope.

QueenBlueberries · 02/12/2020 22:32

Mandatory, sure. We should have the anti vaxx Buzzword bingo I am sure you’d be in with a chance
