Will those blaming schools for the rise in cases admit they were wrong?

R is now around 0.71 and the case numbers are dropping rapidly (hooray!). It seems obvious this huge improvement has been caused by the lockdown. But schools were open the whole time. It's also therefore clear that schools cannot have been the main cause of the second wave.

Why do you need a different thread? Surely today’s admission by the government warrants continuing this thread?

CallmeAngelina · 10/12/2020 21:15

What are you interested in discussing, then? The perplexing and totally unexpected conclusion that schools are driving infections?
Who knew?
oh yes! Lots of teachers.

Sirzy · 10/12/2020 21:18

Wave two is still here, it may have slightly dropped but not for long. All the evidence is very much pointing to schools being a major issue at the moment which has to be in part because they where opened in full in September

AllDoneIn · 10/12/2020 21:19

Here's a facecloth for the egg on your face OP. In your defence, this government have lied, dodged and fudged on this, aided and abetted by the media and even the bloody teaching unions who have been worse than useless.

It's just baffling that all the teachers on MN have been mocked and shouted down for telling people exactly what schools are like and exactly what is going on in them. Why would we lie about it? It's a shitshow.

Special kudos to @noblegiraffe and others who have kept plugging away exposing the truth.

JayDot500 · 10/12/2020 21:20

In the space of a week, our infant school went from zero cases to the entire school having to close due to a full on outbreak in all but two classes. We've been shielding since March but DC had to go to school in Sept because we had little choice in the matter. No flexibility, nothing. People even said we were the irrational ones. For a while we thought we were because things were going well at school. Now, we are awaiting a covid result as DS has symptoms, and I have chest pains. Should anything happen to my ECV DH, or BAME me, then threads like these are the worst kind of trash that my eyes have ever landed upon. The OP should exchange gloating for repentance.

The school/teachers have tried to maintain this normality vs pandemic charade, I don't blame them at all. It's great that some schools haven't been hit, but we could have said the same this time last week! Covid came and spread like wildfire, it's crazy! Many kids are symptomatic, many staff members are unwell. It's very sad, but still there are some parents who aren't isolating their kids, or want to do nothing but complain about the suddenness of it all (blaming the school for closing). I'd have been happy for schoosl to be open and options given to vulnerable parents and kids. I wish I followed my gut and took DS out of school two/three weeks ago when three local secondary schools had to shut down. But I stupidly relaxed my guard. I feel as if I've let my family down.
@noblegiraffe I think I was clear. I was talking about what caused wave 2 which started in late August. It was not schools opening at the start of september.

I would be interested to discuss what is happening now but on a different thread.
Why does it need a different thread? Loads of room on this one.

Mammyloveswine · 10/12/2020 21:35

There are 7 classes out in my primary school atm... parents have been sending children in despite themselves tearing positive or awaiting results.. it is a disgrace!!

Disgusted at the vitriol spouted when schools have been bloody heroic in their handling of still teaching in a bloody pandemic!!

AnyoneseenGav · 10/12/2020 21:36

OP, you started this thread after half term having dismissed any concerns or calls for a circuit breaker. You claimed the R was lower than it was and crowed that the second short Lockdown Lite had done its job. Your OP was not remotely about August and September! The date is there!!

I’m actually embarrassed for them.

Amusing that many posters on this thread heaped a shit load of grief and accusations into noble and yes she’s the poster who hasn’t come back to gloat.

Sorry to disappoint, but I have posted!

Didn't @DBML mean the OP?

CallmeAngelina · 10/12/2020 21:57

Wait, scrap that...

Hah, yes, DBML I think my posts should always be in green so that people can go straight to them Wink

I tried not to be gloaty. But when the OP tried to deny what (who) this thread was really about...

MrsFezziwig · 10/12/2020 22:19

No, let’s keep this thread!

All I need now is for OP to be a DfE stooge and my cup runneth over.

idontknowaboutmortgages · 10/12/2020 22:24

It's Gavin Williamson's account ... WinkSmile

Itisasecret · 10/12/2020 22:25

This should go to classics.

Well today's announcement by Matt Hancock makes this thread look even more utterly ridiculous than it already did!

Will those people claiming that schools were NOT to blame for the rise in cases admit they were wrong? Like teachers have been telling them for months...

When even the shit show of a government now accept it you'd have to be an utter ostrich to pretend they are not.

notevenat20 · 10/12/2020 22:34

I can't imagine what you could gloat about. The second wave was clearly not caused by schools opening. Anyone who looks at the data and the timing can see that. Since then we have had the tier system, the second lockdown and the tier system again. If you claimed the second wave was caused by schools opening you were wrong. You don't acknowledge it but it doesn't change the facts. The cause of the second wave is fairly well understood now and has nothing to do with schools.
.

Now in December it looks like lots of secondary school children are infected. It's very weird to try to retrofit this fact to the conversation about a wave of infections that started in late August.

As I say, it's interesting to discuss what is happening now. But in another thread.

We are in the second wave right now.

Fortherosesjoni70 · 10/12/2020 22:47

@Mumof3andlovingit

Isn’t it obvious that schools are the driving force for covid infection rates in all communities? Why would you even make a thread like this? The government claiming schools are almost covid free and covid secure is expected as they are experts in bullshitting, it’s their job. However, why would any normal citizen of this country make the same claims when it’s so obvious?
Because schools are a babysitting service and without them, the economy cant run. Also they are purveyor of government ideologies. Schools are control. It wouldnt do to have a cohort of home schooled children with free ideas.
middleager · 10/12/2020 23:16

Now in December it looks like lots of secondary school children are infected.

Are your children infected OP? If so, you'd be as angry as I am. How many cases at your school/s? Is it 50 plus? Is it ten per cent in one form like my son's school?

Children at my son's secondary have been spreading infection consistently since September. This is why he's had five self isolations, the first in September, including one where he caught Covid.
It was evident to those of us dealing with this first hand what the problem is in schools. In fact, it should be obvious full stop.
