Sons girlfriend going to Dubai

Baileysforchristmas · 29/11/2020 21:19

My sons girlfriend is living with us at the moment. She announced she’s going to Dubai with friends (not with my son) she has to have 2 tests going to Dubai, none to come back to Uk and you don’t have to isolate. I want her to have a test before she comes back to our house and another test 5 days later, as I want my parents to be able to come round for Christmas. She thinks I am being unreasonable as she will have to pay £170 for each test. Am I being unreasonable?

No if the rest of you are isolating I.e not going shops or going to work. Yes if you are

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/11/2020 21:23

She doesn't need to get tested, Dubai is on the travel corridor. If you want her to get tested, you should pay for it.

Mindymomo · 29/11/2020 21:47

I wouldn’t be happy with her going, which I presume is before Christmas, it’s a bit inconsiderate if she is, knowing you are having parents round. Could she go to her own home when she gets back.

Longdistance · 29/11/2020 21:50

Your house, your rules.

Shekinah1 · 29/11/2020 21:52

Everyone who is an influencer (under 35) seems to be heading to Dubai.

I can’t understand why people just cannot accept holidays aren’t a thing at the moment. This is ridiculous, Dubai must be struggling to want all these British people going there to party in the middle of a pandemic.

carly2803 · 29/11/2020 21:53

your house, your rules

i would make herget a test to before she came back to my house

KylieKoKo · 29/11/2020 22:02

It's your house and you can set any rules you like.
However, I think you shouldconsider why you want her to test.
Do you genuinely think she is more likely to catch covid-19 in Dubai than the UK or are you doing it to show your disapproval of her decision to travel?

MaxNormal · 29/11/2020 22:12

You only need one test to go to Dubai - you can get it in advance or they will do a test on arrival if you're coming in from the UK.

MaxNormal · 29/11/2020 22:13

They need a negative test either 72 hours before or on arrival. It's not foolproof but will certainly keep the numbers down.

I doubt Dubai is struggling it’s UK that’s the problem there needs to be something in place where you test on your way back! It’s UK that is lacking.

Dubai won’t let you in with a positive.

Frazzled2207 · 29/11/2020 22:17

I wouldn't be worried about Dubai per se as I hear they're on top of it there but 7 hours on a flight doesn't sound great at all and I wouldn't be pleased.
I get she doesn't have to isolate but can she go somewhere else for a fortnight when she comes back? Also if your DS is still going to see her that defeats the point a bit I suppose.

MyPersona · 29/11/2020 22:23

Travelling for non essential reasons during the pandemic is ludicrous and I wouldn’t let her back into my home without quarantining/testing. Non negotiable.

picklemewalnuts · 29/11/2020 22:24

I believe aeroplane filters are very effective, so that part's a low risk.
Did she discuss anything with you before booking? Are they contributing in any way for their accommodation?

And what precautions are the rest of you taking? If you really are only doing essential exposure, then her inessential exposure is an issue.

3littlewords · 29/11/2020 22:55

On what terms does she live with you? Is she a paying lodger or a rent free guest? If she's a paying lodger then technically she can come and go as she pleases within the law if she's a just a guest you have every right to withdraw that offer of accommodation. Does she have anywhere else to stay if she doesn't come back to you?

expat101 · 29/11/2020 23:27

A family member has gone to Dubai as well for a holiday. I'm having an interesting conversation with my Uncle about it, he explained the tests required, one was 72 hours before departure (they are not based in the UK BTW) and then a rapid test before boarding, test results kept on an app on her mobile.

However us lot in NZ have our overseas folk arrivals going straight into managed isolation facilities for two weeks, and some of those infected by day 3 have come from Dubai...

I don't understand how the ''rules'' can be so different for the same Country depending on who is implementing them, and I would have thought by now, worldwide COVID management might have stepped up a notch by WHO.

No wonder everyone is confused.

yearinyearout · 29/11/2020 23:36

Are you bonkers? She's living in the OP's house and is buggering off on holiday, potentially putting the household at risk. I too would insist she gets tested at her own expense, or isolates elsewhere for two weeks when she gets back.

This. Your house, your rules as others have said. She is choosing to go during a pandemic, therefore she has to accept the ramifications of her actions. She can afford the trip, but is complaining about the cost of the tests to make sure she is not infecting the householdHmm.
YouDidWHATNow · 30/11/2020 01:33

@Waxonwaxoff0 Croatia was on the travel corridor list at the time my cousin and his friends went. All 9 of them brought Covid back, along with another 15 infected people on the plane, which then in turn infected all their families etc. They are the reason Glasgow got tougher restrictions back in August/September time! A travel corridor doesn't mean no risk

Furries · 30/11/2020 03:14

Sorry, but she doesn’t get to tell you that you’re being unreasonable - your house, your rules. Her decision to go affects more people than just her, especially as people are clinging onto (hopefully sensibly) mingling with others over Christmas.

Nomaigai · 30/11/2020 03:36

Dubai has lower rates of Covid than the UK but it all depends how much you are isolating now and how much she will be social distancing in Dubai. Overall you're not being unreasonable but you could suggest she tests in Dubai before she comes back and then once in the UK (around day 5). Testing in Dubai is cheaper than testing in the UK.

Oreservoir · 30/11/2020 03:41

If she can afford to go to Dubai then she can afford the test.
Just stick to your rules.

ARoseInHarlem · 30/11/2020 03:44

She’s totally unreasonable to moan about you trying to see your parents safely, versus her spending money on tests after a completely optional trip to Dubai. Even if you banned her from going/returning, she’d be unreasonable as a guest in your home. Who does she think she is?!

Personally, I wouldn’t be letting her back into my house without a negative test result. She’s a CF.

Um... there’s a bit more to it than just a holiday.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/technology-50828386

A lot of influencers are struggling at the moment as brand deals & sponsorships are getting harder to come by so it’s no coincidence that there’s a bigger influx into Dubai by them at the moment.

Unfortunately a lot of young people aren’t aware of what’s really going on but because they see so many influencers there, it becomes the popular / “in” place to be & they flock there themselves.

(Sorry to derail your thread OP & I’m in no way suggesting that this is what your son’s girlfriend is doing!).

Hydrate · 30/11/2020 04:54

Your house, your rules. And very reasonable rule if you ask me. She can go or she can stay, it's up to her but as far as staying in your house, that's up to you.

GlowingOrb · 30/11/2020 04:59

I would not let her back into your house at all. A trip abroad is completely unnecessary and just puts your family at risk. I wouldn’t trust the type of person who would choose to make a trip like that right now, even with negative tests. It proves she lacks a basic respect for your safety
