Just something that came through in a newsfeed. Don’t know how accurate. Headline said “ Obese people to get the vaccine before healthy 50 year olds.”
What are your thoughts on this? I’m not sure how I feel tbh. I guess it’s proven that obese people are at a higher risk.
However, what about the under 50 healthy BMI teachers, supermarket workers etc I don’t think it is fair to prioritise an obese 40 year old who works from home or doesn’t work at all over a normal BMI 40 year old teacher, supermarket worker or taxi driver

@rookiemere has said it all for me. The medical don't make judgements on lifestyle etc, it's risk based. If you're lower down the list it's a good thing (I've just heard I might be because covid may be less of a risk to asthmatics than previously thought and I'm pretty pleased about this). They will do their absolute best to get everyone who wants it done ASAP.

So the nightclubs will be full of the over 65s and clinically at risk whilst all of the young healthy people stay home waiting for their turn to be vaccinated?

Well op how will they even know that I am obese? Last time I was weighed at the Doctors I was merely overweight after losing 4 stone.
Unfortunately I have gained much of it due to the stress of dealing with a chronically ill dh and two kids with SEN iand Mental Health Problems.
In the shitfest of a year alone I gained about 2 stone.
I am therefore a carer and have a condition other than the disgusting self inflected obesity so I win any race for a vaccine.
Anyway I am working on my weight again but it ill take years to sort.

DH and I would be the last ones to be vaccinated. Like many others we don’t fall into any of the categories. We have followed all the rules and done everything we can to help protect the vulnerable around us. It’s been miserable for us too even if we don’t complain. I have kids at school and a newborn. I can’t help to think is it fair that whilst everyone else gets vaccinated and back to a normal life, we would still be wearing masks, SD and avoiding elderly family members because we don’t have health conditions or are obese.

You clearly don't understand a thing. If those who are vulnerable are protected then you won't need to do any of those things, and normal life - which in your case appears to centre around yourself - can resume. If you don't fall into any of the vulnerable categories then the risk of you contracting a serious case, especially given the herd immunity levels that would be rapidly rising, would be vanishingly low - it's already vanishingly low for you. Unlike some of the people you think you should elbow out of the way so that you get a vaccine that you really don't need.

Your elderly family members would have the vaccine so you could see them.

It is NOT POSSIBLE for everyone to get the vaccine at the same time. Someone has to go first, that doesn't make it "unfair" on those who get it later. Its just life. Its "unfair" that some people have serious underlying conditions which make them vulnerable to covid. Personally I would rather be healthy and wait longer for a vaccine.

(I'm 30 and have mild asthma, I'm sure I'll be in one of the last groups to get the vaccine)

There weren't many "thin" deaths in my part of the hospital. Vast majority were obese. It would be fab if they were vaccinated, bloody difficult turning the larger patient on life support machine up-side down for better lung ventilation.

Priority list will be based on those who will need NHS intervention the most as it should be. What do you suggest OP? Alphabetical order? Richest first poorest last?

You could argue that this decision is based on cold hard economics. The more people who get sick, the more it costs in NHS spending to look after them. So it makes economic sense to make the vaccine investment work (though presumably risk is calculated as a multiple of [risk of exposure] times [risk of needing a lot f expensive care], IYSWIM)

If it were a purely economical decision then surely no one in care homes would get it but anyone of working age would instead, to allow the majority of people to get back out and safely earn and spend money?

I don’t think that that’s the right way forward, but what doesn’t quite make sense to me is prioritising people who are less likely to have a strong immune response to the vaccine and/or who are statistically likely to pass away within 2-3 years (average lifespan of a care home resident) as the number of vaccinated people would naturally then decline.

It would seem more logical to offer it to those who residents come into contact with instead, so not just care and nursing staff, but anyone who has a loved one in a care home, to ensure that residents can have visitors safely - even if their regular nominated visitor is, for example, a 30 year old granddaughter, who otherwise wouldn’t be eligible for months and months.

The vaccination programme is going to be aimed at protecting the most vulnerable people first so we can reduce the death rate.
Anyone who thinks that is the wrong approach is a pretty sick person because it means that more people will die.

For me I want the people most vulnerable to being seriously ill and needing hospitalisation to get it first.

It is not about who is more likely to catch it. It’s about who is most likely to get seriously ill from it. And if that’s elderly, obese, whatever, I don’t care, prioritise them and protect them.

It makes more sense to get a £12 vaccine surely than ££££ of ICU time. Nice to know someone like OP doesn’t think I deserve either.
