Obese people to get the vaccine before healthy 50 year olds.

Just something that came through in a newsfeed. Don’t know how accurate. Headline said “ Obese people to get the vaccine before healthy 50 year olds.”
What are your thoughts on this? I’m not sure how I feel tbh. I guess it’s proven that obese people are at a higher risk.
However, what about the under 50 healthy BMI teachers, supermarket workers etc I don’t think it is fair to prioritise an obese 40 year old who works from home or doesn’t work at all over a normal BMI 40 year old teacher, supermarket worker or taxi driver

OP posts:

@Sb2012

I probably pay more tax than the average obese person

Can you come back and tell us why this is?

Soontobe60 · 28/11/2020 10:19

However obesity can be helped and therefore I’m not sure how I feel about obese people being prioritised over those who work in high risk role

You’re a charmer aren’t you? I’m guessing you're also thin? My niece is clinically obese - she has Downs Syndrome. What priority should she be?

Fixed it for you.

frumpety · 28/11/2020 10:24

What about keyworkers who are nurses and are obese ? My BMI is 44 and I have worked in my normal patient facing role since the pandemic began. I will be offered the vaccine because of my job.

VettiyaIruken · 28/11/2020 10:26

Well, they can either make judgements about people's worth and sort them into 'deserving' and 'its their own fault, fuck em'

Or they can go strictly by clinical vulnerability for whatever reason.

ScienceSensibility · 28/11/2020 10:29

@TheFormerPorpentinaScamander

I can’t help to think is it fair...

Is is fair that I was sexually abused and raped repeatedly by my brother?
Is it fair that those repeated rapes led to 2 pregnancies by the age of 18? (I also now realise my Dad was sexually abusive and I'm trying to un-jumble those memories)
Is it fair that my Mum was emotionally, and on occasion physically abusive. Including restricting what food I was allowed?
Is it fair that those above experiences have led to complex mental health issues the medication for which has caused weight gain?
Is it fair that I have other physical issues, as yet undiagnosed (a combination of covid restrictions and anxiety mean i haven't had the tests I need) which contributed to my weight gain?

Would you like to discuss what's fair?

But actually don't worry. I already know I'm a waste of space. I'm only still here because I don't want my children to think I didn't fight to stay alive for them. Once they are grown up... well who knows.

I’m sorry this has been your life so far.

I hope you can see that most people on this thread don’t share the vile views of the OP, and are capable of seeing beyond the ‘eating burgers’ crap. There are many, many different reasons why human beings gain weight, and none of them mean they should be denied access to a potentially life saving vaccine.

I wish you well for recovering from your trauma, for yourself as well as for your children. 💐

GreyishDays · 28/11/2020 10:35

It’s only 3% of the population that have a BMI over 40.
digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/publications/statistical/statistics-on-obesity-physical-activity-and-diet/england-2020/part-3-adult-obesity-copy

Then take out those that fall into another high risk group and it’s very small numbers.

frozendaisy · 28/11/2020 10:36

@Sb2012. You say you don't know how you feel about this and that. But your comments, being the OP, come across that fat people offend you and you found this vaccine headline to let it all out.

Yes a chubby who pays less tax than you and uses more services than you might get a vaccine before you.

And there is nothing anyone can do about it.

Best just get on with things. Everyone will be offeref a vaccine in time.

The medics and scientists (thank you all) are trying to vaccinate the whole world. Not just low-risk, high tax payers in Europe.

I presume they are working as fast as they can.

You are, of course, entitled to your opinion but in the great scheme of things it is as utterly irrelevant as is mine. Because I am not part of the vaccination chain only a patient right at the end of the process.

They know what they are doing, the gutter press, really living up to its name attempting to pit groups of people against each other in this now. And you fell for it.

Let the medics get on with it. Accept their decisions with grace if you can.

feelingverylazytoday · 28/11/2020 10:37

I'm happy with whatever the JCVI decides, OP. They have a lot of expertise and are apolitical.
To be honest, I think we're very lucky when it comes to vaccines, including this one, in the UK, and there's no need to argue over who gets it first. Maybe spare a thought for people in poorer countries who might not get it for a long time instead.

Sevensilverrings · 28/11/2020 10:43

If the OP would like my clinical need so she can queue jump, I’m more than happy to swap...actually I’m not. I’d hate to be either this ignorant, this selfish, or this cruel. (Also my clinical need is not recognised as was going through diagnosis when everything blew up, so just the vulnerability and no ‘pay off’. but it doesn’t mean I have to bitch about others).
To all those reading here, and feeling less ok than before they started reading, pay no attention. OP is probably a troll, and certainly not worth a second thought. You are worth ten of her and absolutely deserve care and your place in the vaccination order.
Just as well for some it’s not based on a personality test....

mumwon · 28/11/2020 11:07

@Sevensilverrings based on personality test Grin

Lily193 · 28/11/2020 11:33

OP, what amazes me most about this thread is the fact that anyone has been stupid or desperate enough to marry you. The idea of being in a relationship with someone who holds views like these is totally abhorrent. I truly pity the individual who has to refer to you as their wife as I can' t imagine they would feel anything other than shame and embarrassment at being associated with you.

burnoutbabe · 28/11/2020 11:37

@Splodgetastic

Glad to see I’m not the only one wondering how they know who is morbidly obese etc. Theoretically I should get the vaccine in an earlier wave than others my age due to a lung condition but as the NHS hasn’t been able to provide adequate care for years I now have private treatment, so I doubt they even know. No one has weighed me since 2009 either.
Surely they just ask people who have bmi over 40 to contact their gp for the vaccine. It's easily checked if they think you are "lying" to skip the queue. Yes a risk those people won't take it up as they deny they are overweight but that's on them (and probably people around cuteness would encourage it anyway)
PineappleUpsideDownCake · 28/11/2020 11:40

Im wondering at what point I ring and tell them this. Or if I ring this week the receptionist will wonder whg Ive rung to tell her Im m.obese.... or whether to wait until there's some national "tell the dr you're m kbese" call.

If only there was some plan to offer proper clinical support (not a free voucher for ww or slimming world fgs) for those m.obese as presumably it would save money longer term in the nhs...

I would just get on and ring them. Your reasons for wanting your medical records to be up to date on this matter are perfectly rational (not that it’s any of the receptionist’s business why).

Join my tribe. Maybe the OP would like to flip this round so we prioritise by the amount of tax people pay. Grin

FatCatThinCat · 28/11/2020 12:02

Weight gain and obesity is a symptom of untreated sleep apnea. I had sleep apnea for 25 years before finally being diagnosed. I started treatment in May and have lost 20 kg since then. But I'm still morbidly obese as correcting decades of damage done by misdiagnosis doesn't happen over night.

there would be some clear guidance from GPs - they often send out mass texts to all patients. So they could include this:

ie we are seeing group 6 this week, please let us know if you fall in this group if you have X Y Z, BMI over 40. They won't just base it on their records like they can with age.

Let's put Daily Fail readers last.....work from there! Grin

In all seriousness though it's nothing short of superhuman these new vaccines. Something to celebrate not squabble over.

PolarnOPirate · 28/11/2020 12:32

OP sounds incredibly sheltered and naive. Someone said to me the other day ‘just eat less, move more, it really is that simple!’ No.

Anxiety meds
Dealing with depression
Counselling to unpack childhood issues and understand why as a FOUR YEAR OLD I associated stress relief with sugar and snuck food for the next 14 years.
Dealing with a shit metabolism

All that has to come before some people are actually capable of eating less.

Quite. Try 'moving more' when you"ve had no sleep for 20+ years. Let"s see them get out and exercise after just one night of being woken up every 2 minutes. It's extremely ignorant.
Lily193 · 28/11/2020 12:46

Completely agreed, but this is turning into yet another opportunity for some people to demonstrate their truly unpleasant nature.

PolarnOPirate · 28/11/2020 12:46

IGNORANT! That’s the word!

ColdNovemberNights · 28/11/2020 12:52

Im Clinically Extremely vulnerable

I am overweight but this obviously isnt why im CEV

Been advised to shield since March...

Apart from drs and hospital, we have been out 3 times, im 36!!!!!

My partner, 42, is overweight, he doesnt over eat, doesnt eat any ‘goodies, doesnt drink fizzy, Nothing’ He has a heart and blood issue but is not classed as ‘Clinically extremely vulnerable’ but would be very ill if he caught covid, due to his weight!
He has limited excerise as he has a mobility issue!

We NEED to get some sort of normality back.
Even walking around Tesco or going for a simple coffee.
But when i get the vaccine, we still wont be able to go anywhere unless he has the vaccine too.....

He will get more sick than the ‘average’ person and his weight issue will be a problem.

So sorry, but im glad he will get the vaccine before a fit and healthy 65 year old !!!

Shoot me!!!!!!!

Feministicon · 28/11/2020 12:54

@Kakiweewee

38 and still obese here. I've lost 73lbs since March so I'm trying to do something about it, in part because of Covid being a wake-up call although I'd started weightloss before lockdown. I'd like to be treated like all the other high-risk groups.
Well done, that’s awesome!
