Just something that came through in a newsfeed. Don’t know how accurate. Headline said “ Obese people to get the vaccine before healthy 50 year olds.”
What are your thoughts on this? I’m not sure how I feel tbh. I guess it’s proven that obese people are at a higher risk.
However, what about the under 50 healthy BMI teachers, supermarket workers etc I don’t think it is fair to prioritise an obese 40 year old who works from home or doesn’t work at all over a normal BMI 40 year old teacher, supermarket worker or taxi driver

It is an eating disorder and a mental illness. Would you have the same view of someone who suffers from bulimia or anorexia? These are eating disorders but you just enjoy being nasty.

The point about clinical risk and NHS admission affects EVERYONE. Because the more at risk people get cv, the more hospitals fill up, and therefore delay treatment for others. That causes increased deaths all round, and could affect every slim person on here (and everyone else, too).

Absolutely disgusting views OP! There are very few obese people who have gained weight just due to fancying a few extra treats! Maybe you should try to educating yourself on eating disorders, the effects of medication on diet, mental illness and the many medical conditions that affect the metabolism.

OP, you seem to think life won't return to normal until YOU'VE had the vaccine. That isn't the case. Once the most vulnerable have been vaccinated, so the risk of dying diminishes, then restrictions can start to be lifted for everyone.

Covid will still be around, people will still get sick but most will be at home for a week, then recover. Much the same as flu - the vulnerable get vaccinated, the rest get on with it. And I expect once production of the vaccine steps up, there'll be a market to get it privately too, should you wish.

38 and still obese here. I've lost 73lbs since March so I'm trying to do something about it, in part because of Covid being a wake-up call although I'd started weightloss before lockdown. I'd like to be treated like all the other high-risk groups.

Im Clinically Extremely vulnerable

I am overweight but this obviously isnt why im CEV

Been advised to shield since March...

Apart from drs and hospital, we have been out 3 times, im 36!!!!!

My partner, 42, is overweight, he doesnt over eat, doesnt eat any ‘goodies, doesnt drink fizzy, Nothing’ He has a heart and blood issue but is not classed as ‘Clinically extremely vulnerable’ but would be very ill if he caught covid, due to his weight!
He has limited excerise as he has a mobility issue!

We NEED to get some sort of normality back.
Even walking around Tesco or going for a simple coffee.
But when i get the vaccine, we still wont be able to go anywhere unless he has the vaccine too.....

He will get more sick than the ‘average’ person and his weight issue will be a problem.

So sorry, but im glad he will get the vaccine before a fit and healthy 65 year old !!!

there would be some clear guidance from GPs - they often send out mass texts to all patients. So they could include this:

ie we are seeing group 6 this week, please let us know if you fall in this group if you have X Y Z, BMI over 40. They won't just base it on their records like they can with age.

Weight gain and obesity is a symptom of untreated sleep apnea. I had sleep apnea for 25 years before finally being diagnosed. I started treatment in May and have lost 20 kg since then. But I'm still morbidly obese as correcting decades of damage done by misdiagnosis doesn't happen over night.

I would just get on and ring them. Your reasons for wanting your medical records to be up to date on this matter are perfectly rational (not that it’s any of the receptionist’s business why).

Glad to see I’m not the only one wondering how they know who is morbidly obese etc. Theoretically I should get the vaccine in an earlier wave than others my age due to a lung condition but as the NHS hasn’t been able to provide adequate care for years I now have private treatment, so I doubt they even know. No one has weighed me since 2009 either.

Surely they just ask people who have bmi over 40 to contact their gp for the vaccine. It's easily checked if they think you are "lying" to skip the queue.
Yes a risk those people won't take it up as they deny they are overweight but that's on them (and probably people around cuteness would encourage it anyway)

I'm happy with whatever the JCVI decides, OP. They have a lot of expertise and are apolitical.
To be honest, I think we're very lucky when it comes to vaccines, including this one, in the UK, and there's no need to argue over who gets it first. Maybe spare a thought for people in poorer countries who might not get it for a long time instead.

It’s only 3% of the population that have a BMI over 40.

Then take out those that fall into another high risk group and it’s very small numbers.
