Obese people to get the vaccine before healthy 50 year olds.

Just something that came through in a newsfeed. Don’t know how accurate. Headline said “ Obese people to get the vaccine before healthy 50 year olds.”
What are your thoughts on this? I’m not sure how I feel tbh. I guess it’s proven that obese people are at a higher risk.
However, what about the under 50 healthy BMI teachers, supermarket workers etc I don’t think it is fair to prioritise an obese 40 year old who works from home or doesn’t work at all over a normal BMI 40 year old teacher, supermarket worker or taxi driver

It's not the fucking hunger games.
Apply science. To minimise the number of deaths, those more likely to die get the jab first.
I'm not judging. People who suffer with obesity are no less deserving of, you know, living than the next person.

Splodgetastic · 28/11/2020 07:08

Glad to see I’m not the only one wondering how they know who is morbidly obese etc. Theoretically I should get the vaccine in an earlier wave than others my age due to a lung condition but as the NHS hasn’t been able to provide adequate care for years I now have private treatment, so I doubt they even know. No one has weighed me since 2009 either.

EffOrf · 28/11/2020 07:13

How does OP pay more tax than a similarly obese person, tax is based on earnings and assets not weight.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 28/11/2020 07:19

Actually an obese individual could paid more with sugar tax.
Support for the obese is also dire. I begged for help a few years ago when my BMI was heafing towards 40 but I didn't qualify as I paid gor my prescriptions. WTAF

PineappleUpsideDownCake · 28/11/2020 07:21

Yep ive asked for support repeatedly....

LordOfTheOnionRings · 28/11/2020 07:26

Obesity isn't always a choice OP. There are many factors that link with weight. We are not all greedy despite what you might think.

What a horrible and devisive narrative you're trying to run. You really aren't a nice person. And the reason you'll be last to be vaccinated is because you're low risk. you should be thankful for that.

ThatDamnScientist · 28/11/2020 07:27

Can someone link to the updated JCVI list as I am seeing people post numerous threads that this group and that group are now getting the vaccine first (eg. Obese) or not getting the vaccine (eg. mild asthma). All I can see is the list on from 25th September on any official website.

Just for the record I have no issue with obese (bmi 40 +) being prioritised over others - those that will suffer most need it first. (I say that as an obese but not bmi 40+ mild asthmatic who according to mumsnet isn't getting the jab at all now 🤦‍♀️)

Backbee · 28/11/2020 07:28

I can’t help to think is it fair that whilst everyone else gets vaccinated and back to a normal life, we would still be wearing masks, SD and avoiding elderly family members because we don’t have health conditions or are obese.

So you'd rather have what is likely to be a lifelong health condition that affects your life forever, rather than wait a bit longer for a jab? And in regards to those that are obese, it's been decided on risk, why should people wait because you are narrow minded and don't see that obesity is often complex, and there's no support for things like BED, or counselling that addresses the underlying issues for many?

SquareSausage17 · 28/11/2020 07:31

How does OP pay more tax than a similarly obese person, tax is based on earnings and assets not weight

I expect it’s based on some revolting stereotype lodged in OP’s head that obese people are lazy, stupid and unmotivated and therefore likely to be lower earners than her, a thin and therefore valuable person.

knackersknockersknickers · 28/11/2020 07:34

Basically you don't care about what the order of priority is as long as you get your vaccine?

Most people won't pay enough tax to pay their NHS "bill" over their lifetime. Perhaps you should get VIP membership deal?

TasslesandFringes · 28/11/2020 07:39

YABVVVVVVVVVU.

LizzieSiddal · 28/11/2020 07:39

It is those with a BMI over 40, so that’s morbidly obese. Of course they should be a priority, as should anyone who have a much higher chance of ending up in ICU. I want ICU empty of Covid patients asap, so the NHS can back to “normal.”

Northernsoulgirl45 · 28/11/2020 07:43

Why do you think you pay more tax than the average obese person, OP? Is it because you think obese people are thick and lazy (asking as a slightly overweight asthmatic). All the stuff you have come out with one this thread is hilarious - you really are a walking Daily Mail bingo card, aren't you? Well, that is the kind way to describe you
Love it @krustykittens

RishiMcRichface · 28/11/2020 07:49

It's only going to be a difference of a few months at most they will be vaccinating like crazy once the stuff is ready.

folkloreore · 28/11/2020 07:51

I hope every obese person gets the vaccine before you OP.

The idea that you don't consider clinical need a good enough way to prioritise, and would like to see a human-value system instead, puts you in very poor company historically.

A vile thread. I sincerely hope you're just a shitty journalist trying to stir up controversy, if you're actually like this then I'll give you BiscuitBiscuitBiscuit you never know, it might up your bmi.

DipSwimSwoosh · 28/11/2020 08:10

I am a teacher and just under 40. I don't want the vaccine. I'd rather get the virus as I know I am unlikely to be at huge risk from it anyway. It makes much more sense for an obese or older person to have the vaccine if they want it.

DemolitionBarbie · 28/11/2020 08:13

I love OP's post that starts with 'show me the data' and ends with 'I probably pay more tax than obese people'!

You might be obese yourself one day OP. You don't have to be greedy, plenty of medications and health conditions will do it. I'm sure you wouldn't mind risking your health for more deserving, tax-paying skinny people then.

rookiemere · 28/11/2020 08:22

@Splodgetastic maybe folks can self identify as having BMI >40 to jump the queue.

OwlOne · 28/11/2020 08:23

That makes sense I think.

bookish83 · 28/11/2020 08:30

@MercyBooth

Im 47 and in the overweight category. I havent made my mind up about the vaccine yet.

DH is 70 , has COPD and doesnt want it
My 84 year old parents dont want it either.

This will likely be echoed all over the country so will probably even itself out anyway.

So all of the very people this country has tried to protect? Trying not to admit to hospital or worse? And you are all going to decide against a vaccine?

Absolute madness. I am actually lost for words.

CoronaCurls · 28/11/2020 08:38

I've just got my BMI to below 40, because I had private therapy and paid for weight loss surgery. A year ago the NHS told me my eating 'too dysfunctional ' and they couldn't do anything to help me.

Compare this to the amount of resources and time invested by the NHS in stopping smoking services- i don't resent this; i think it is money very well spent but why is binge eating disorder (which is what many in 40+ BMI group have) completely ignored by health services?

I'm living proof that intensive therapy (£90 a session) works and am losing weight quickly post-surgery.

I gained weight when I developed a chronic illness, which then caused depression, so I was put on medication which caused me to gain a significant amount of weight, but it saved my life.

Is this my fault? Am I just lazy and greedy?

You are a very lucky person OP that you have no idea of the reasons why people gain weight.

Newuser991 · 28/11/2020 08:46

I don't understand people desperate for the vaccine and being scornful of people getting it before them.

Am I the only one who is glad to be last in line? Under 40, no health issues?

I happily have tried and tested vaccines for travel: hepatitis, typhoid, etc as they have been around for decades.

A brand new vaccine pushed through in less than a year of a new disease becoming known and clinical trials having taken place on a small section of people.

We really have no idea how people will react to it once mass vaccination begins.

You can all be the guinea pigs to try it out before me I'm happy with that Grin

OverTheRainbow88 · 28/11/2020 08:48

@Newuser991

Yes I almost think it should be rolled out to the fit and healthy as a trial before trying it on all the vulnerable and our key workers!!!

crossstitchingnana · 28/11/2020 08:49

@Kakiweewee

38 and still obese here. I've lost 73lbs since March so I'm trying to do something about it, in part because of Covid being a wake-up call although I'd started weightloss before lockdown. I'd like to be treated like all the other high-risk groups.
Well done you! That's amazing.
SirFlouncealot · 28/11/2020 08:52

The Times is reporting that people with diabetes will be prioritised over those aged 65 and over. I’ve known plenty of people with diabetes who are not overweight never mind obese.
